So I can't find a conclusive answer whether I can eat Taramasalata when pg. NHS has it on their Pregnancy pages as a good source of Vit D and no where on the Food Standards site can I find a specific 'no' but reading other forums people say to avoid... what do you think ladies? Am seriously craving a tub with some nice toasted pitta... [drooling emoticon]

Have some. You'll be fine.

WorrisomeHeart · 10/04/2010 16:28

Yayyyyy!! Just wanted some MN approval, thanks Lyra!

I had some last night with toasted baguette. Was yum. Enjoy!

bibbitybobbityhat · 10/04/2010 16:40

Is that for a girl or a boy?

Either way, I think they may come in for a bit of ribbing in the playground.

WorrisomeHeart · 10/04/2010 16:48

Bibbity

Heh heh. Ignore me, I'm just being norty.

Petsville · 10/04/2010 17:11

Definitely don't see why not - I certainly would.

Bibbity, might steal that idea - unfortunately mine's going to be a boy and I do think it would work better for a girl!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/04/2010 18:31

I had some last week after a huge craving! I asked a greek friend and she said she didn't when pregnant because its raw fish eggs but when I looked on the packet it says its marinated in water, salt and sugar so I reckon its fine. Not a lot can survive in salt!

I really enjoyed mine hope you do too

DomesticG0ddess · 10/04/2010 18:52

Yes!

designerjooles · 10/04/2010 19:16

WorrisomeHeart · 10/04/2010 19:34

It is full of vitamin D so really good for you whilst pregnant.
I am 18 weeks pregnant now, with a beautiful healthy baby and haven't stopped eating anything the guidelines say you should. I don't drink alcohol but have continued to drink my morning cup of coffee (only one a day), blue cheese, nuts, pate. I have never been sick from food so unless you are particularly sensitive to foods I would say just use your own judgement and common sense.

Octaviapink · 12/04/2010 09:07

Ignore all food rules! They're only there because certain foods can't be cast-iron-guaranteed - if you don't normally get ill from eating blue cheese or whatever you're highly unlikely to do so when pregnant and even less likely to be so ill as to harm the baby. The placenta is a wonderful thing - something has to be REALLY toxic to cross that barrier.

narmada · 12/04/2010 14:09

Sorry octaviapink, you are wrong and your advice could harm someone. Blue cheese, the example you give, can carry listeria bacerium. Those with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of contracting listeriosis - this includes pregnant women, the elderly, and young children.

Of course most people won't get infections, but there is a statistically significant increase in the risk of contracting listeriosis, salmonella etc if you are pregnant. Listeriosis is perfectly capable of crossing the placental barrier. The consequences for a pregnant woman and her baby are potentially more serious than for a non-pregnant person.

But to the OP I love taramasalata and had some, ooh, about 3 weeks ago while pregnant.

Octaviapink · 12/04/2010 14:24

Sorry narmada - I'm sure you're correct. I've been given advice by French nurses who of course don't ban blue cheese or unpasteurised ones.

narmada · 12/04/2010 15:08

S'alright, just get a bit tetchy about sciency stuff. It's quite intresting about attitudes in different countries. You'd think they might be more relaxed in Italy, for example, but my cousin says they are positively rigid and far more strict than here about what you should and shouldn't eat.

tatatetelle · 09/12/2016 16:46

For any future mama desperately craving Taramasala (like me!) I though I'd put this here: www.croydonhealthservices.nhs.uk/Downloads/Miscellaneous/Pregnancy%20book.pdf

Taramasala is actually recommended for the vitamin D it contains Grin

Enjoy!

SumAndSubstance · 09/12/2016 17:05

(irrelevant comment) I HATE taramasalata.

Esker · 09/12/2016 17:19

It better be ok as I've been eating it by the bucket load. My consultant said she had never seen such good vit D levels so maybe that's the secret!!

(Do NOT look at the fat content though- I once did after eating a whole pot of it: Shock)

raviolidreaming · 09/12/2016 19:11

Is that for a girl or a boy?

Girl, surely? Taramasalata on the birth certificate with Tara as a nickname?

OP, if the NHS says it's okay then I would trust that.

SiobhanO83 · 14/12/2016 12:49

Am heavily preggas and eating some as I type this. Also have a Camembert baking in the oven. Yum!
