Polyhydramnios at 38 weeks/breech presentation

Hi everyone.

I was admitted with pre-eclampsia and ended up in an aemergency c section with my son, now aged 3. I am now 38 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and have been monitored very closely. About a month ago I was told I had polyhydrmnios with an AFI of 26. I was tested for diabetes and that result came back clear. The baby has been head down for the last month but on my midwifes appointment this week she thinks the baby has now turned breech. I have my scan tomorrow to confirm this and to also check the fluid levels. A planned CS has always been on the cards due to my emergency section with my first child, however I was really hoping that I would be able to deliver vaginally this time round.
I was just wondering if anybody else was in or has been in a similar situation as havn't got a clue what to expect tomorrow at the scan. I will be 39 wks on monday so nearly full term anyway. I am guessing that if the baby is still breech I am going to have to have a planned c section, as even if the baby turns, she can also quite easily turn back to breech again due to the polyhydramnios?? I am also so scared of my waters breaking anyway due to the risks of cord prolapse etc with polyhydramnios.

Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, I had polyhydramnios in the later months of my pregnancy, so I can sympathise with the added discomfort and worry. I too tested negative for diabetes but was monitored closely. My baby was breech with a very big head so I was panicking a bit about the birth but he turned in the last couple of weeks. In the end I was induced at 39 weeks because my blood pressure was too high and it was deemed safer for me and the baby. I had a natural birth and only a small tear (no stitches)

I was diagnosed with big baby, polyhydramnios and a transverse lie at 36+4 wks. Booked in for an ECV yesterday, but baby had turned head down of his own accord. So my c-section was cancelled and they are saying that hopefully he'll stay where he is.
I was still told to come in at the first signs of labour to have a scan to confirm he's still head down though.
Having an appointment with the obstetrician when I am 39+5 in case he;s not come out yet and then they'll decide whether to induce.
I am sorry I can't tell you my outcome yet!
What will happen at your scan would depend on hospital policy. Mine doesn't even offer ECV if you've had a C-section before, so it would definetely be a C-section for you at my hospital. I really hope things go ok for you. Good luck!

Hi thanks for both replies. The baby had turned head down at the scan today which was a relief so I am still hoping for a normal birth! They have said to call an ambulance if waters go due to this cord prolapse risk and also written in my notes cephalic 4/5. Do you know if that means the baby's head is 4/5ths engaged or only 1/5th?? My consultant seems willing to leave me till 41 wks and if the baby hasn't come by then and if they can't break my waters, I will then have to have a c section as I am not able to be induced due to an increase in scar rupture from my previous c section. Although I am really hoping I don't end up going overdue!
What AFI levels did both of you have with the polyhydramnios? Last time mine were 26 and today 24, so guessing that isn't too bad?

Good luck to you too, hope it all goes well x
