Has anyone had a scan at 32 weeks?

I have one booked for this Wednesday with an appointment with the consultant on Thursday. The registrar arranged these at my 28 week appointment as a "precaution", saying there was nothing for me to be concerned about. Any ideas?

I posted this in the mum of 40+ thread some time ago but got little response

As it is half term DD3 (11yrs old) is keen to come. Is this a good idea?

TIA

I'm having one at 32 weeks to check whether my placenta is still low or not, followed up with a consultant talk. No idea about taking kids as this is my first!

I did but then I was having scans every fortnight from 20 weeks with both mine!

Possibility it could be to check position of the placenta - maybe it was over the opening at your 20 weeks scan, it often moves by itself so they may do a 34 week(or thereabouts) scan just to check it has.

Presume nothing they are particularly concerned about if they are willing to wait that long.

It may be local policy to check the size of baby due to other factors which we are not aware of (your age/size/weight)

The best thing is to ask? Ask the sonographer why you are being scanned. They shouldn't scan you without a reason and if they know what the reason is so should you.

I'll be having a 32 week scan in a couple of weeks. They'll be checking fetal well being, ie that its growing well, everything looks normal and blood flow from the placenta is ok. Obviously with all tests there's a risk of them finding something wrong, otherwise they wouldn't do it, but seeing as it wasn't arranged as an emergency it doesn't sound like the doctors are too concerned that something might be wrong, so probably fine to take DD3 I would have thought.

Thanks for your respones!

Should have said: placenta was high and posterior at 20 week scan so no problem afaik.

BMI was 20 at booking in appointment and no health issues.

This will be DC#4 (I have twins of 17yrs old and a DD 11years old). Both those pregnancies were "normal". I am 40 years old!

Had quite a few later scans with DD2 due to being 40 and having thryroid probs. DD1 came with us and found out it was a sister and it was lovely for her to see the baby moving in Mum's tummy. She really felt part of it too which helps I think when they're a bit older and understand the process a bit better. Good luck.

I had one at 34 weeks - I was told by my original consultant that this was because I have ulcerative colitis (which is v under control - not even on meds at the mo) but when I visited the scan/consultant (different consultant) appointment they both told me it is more to do with my age (35 & first baby) and check that the baby was positioned correctly etc to make sure everything goes as easily as it possibly can so that they can be prepared.

Personally I looked at it that it was another chance to 'see' the child and was quite interested the amount they could tell at that stage (ie baby was estimated to weigh over 5lb then so will probably be quite large ) and found once I was there it was a very reasuring experience.

ande - any news - how did your scan go?

TakeLovingChances · 07/04/2010 19:34

I'm in Northern Ireland. The hospital I had DS in gave everyone a scan at 12, 20, 30 and 36 weeks. This isn't the case in all hospitals, but really just to have a visual check.

Sassles · 07/04/2010 20:18

Hi,

My Local Authority/Hospital give everyone growth scans at 32 and 36/38 weeks as standard.

Had my 32 one and 36 one is on Friday. nice to get a wee peek this late on.

No issues with growth. Scanner said Baby was "average". The cheek ; )

I had a growth scan at 32 weeks with dd as the bump had stopped growing (measured by fundal height measurements at mw appt). Mw explained why she was sending me for the scan and seemed fairly unconcerned about it. HTH

If you are over 40 I think they sometimes like to keep an eye on growth - what the evidence base is for this I really don't know. Clearly they think over 40 is ancient in the NHS!

Ask the sonographer as someone suggested.

A friend of mine had one at 32 weeks as they did not get a clear view of the position of her placenta at her 20 week scan. By way of warning if you are considering taking your daughter with you, they did hers vaginally (not sure if this has anything to do with her being overweight????) They didn't tell her in advance that it would be done by way of a vaginal scan, so if it would bother you or her to have this done whilst she is accompanying you, might be worth asking how the scan will be done.
