what clothes do you need for a new baby?

Morning all,
I am starting to wonder if I have enough stuff for when baby comes home clothes wise. We went through all the stuff we have given yesterday, and in the 0-3 months bracket (this one will probably never be in newborn size) we have a mountain ( literally) of vests, but only a couple of baby grows and a handful of playsuits.

How many baby grows etc do you really need. Do they go through clothes at a rate of knots or will a few in circulation be ok.

Sorry , this seems like a bit of a stupid question, but I really just don't know.

baby grows that can be slung in the washer and draped over your clothes maiden then put on the baby, no ironing or faffing.
Need a few of them, not so much vests, they are a pain and a faff.
play suits are ok for showing baby off to family, but again a faff.

Mine lived in cheepy easy baby grows day and night.
Dont make things comlex, you really REALLY dont need it.

just about 12 vests 12 baby grows and jacket or snowsuit to wear, some blankets a couple of hat, scratch mitten although I hate them, they just fall off, nappies, you are good to go, I only say 12 of everything so you don't have to wash all the time is a random number. I know as I am having my 3rd and the amount of frilly dresses I got with my last dd was crazy in 0-3 month as is a pain to put on she looked uncomfortable and I could not really be arsed using them all but had to sometimes so the people who bought could see her in it.

I have still been bought a few little boys outfits in 0-3 adn 3-6 for this baby but as tis the 3rd people have nto gone mad and it is the second boy so think everyone is a bit underwhelmed.

When is the baby due? In the middle of summer, just a vest will be fine.

Outside layers, (anything other than vests I mean so a babygrow or a top + trouser set or a romper suit) I reckon you need about 7-10. Depends how much washing you want to do and how sicky/dribbly/pooey your baby is. If you go for trousers + tops, then you can get more of whatever your baby wrecks more (hopefully you will get a dribbler, puker or explosive poo-er and not all three at once!) but it's fine just to use babygrows or sleepsuits if you want to, they seem more comfortable anyway. If you want to go for tops and trousers, H&M do some lovely soft leggings for boys and girls which seem comfy, and are quite cheap.

Don't bother with separate scratch mitts, if you want them, some of the shops do sleepsuits with fold over scratch mitts on the sleeves.

Hats - maybe get one or two, definitely get a sunhat for a summer baby.

Socks/shoes - socks are useful and look cute if you are using little outfits or footless romper suits, but not essential. Little shoes are unnecessary and always make sure they are nice and soft, and not too small.

Coat/snowsuit - don't bother with this - you can't use them in carseats, you will forever be adjusting the pram straps to accommodate it or not, and your baby will be way too hot in shops etc unless you plan to undress him every time you go in or out of one. Just use blankets in pram/carseat etc - easy to adjust, easy to wash, and they don't grow out of them.

Don't bother with clothes at all - babygros all the way. I had about seven or eight and that worked ok, but dd was very possety and threw up at least three times a day so I was doing a lot of washing. I'm planning to have more this time!

Yes outfits are hopeless for babies. Especially dresses for girls - what's the point when they lie down all the time? They just ride up and look uncomfortable.

I agree lots of baby gros - they can wear during day and at night. Short sleeves for summer and long for winter. Baby gros without feet are good when it's warm - we just cut ours off when they got too small and they lasted a bit longer.

Little baby vests are useful in my view - they are supposed to wear 1 more layer than an adult so nearly always had a vest on but used the ones which are like bodies - with short sleeves and poppers in the crotch. They can be worn alone in warm weather.

1 or 2 little zip up tops to wear as a coat if cold. Kind of depends when baby is due. My DD was born in a heatwave so lived in her nappy mainly for a month!

That's it really. Once they can sit up a bit I would move onto joggers or leggings for girls and t shirts but keep it simple.

Someone else told me this but scratch mitts are useless - just put socks on their hands if they scratch. It works.

All the shops seem to sell mostly those all in one sleeper suits and vests/tops that fasten with poppers under the bottom, but if you are out and about and have a nappy leak situation, it is a right pain when the nappy leaks through a layer of clothing and you have to change the whole outfit including the top half. I remember spending ages in public toilets awkwardly trying to take the whole ensemble off and re-dress him from scratch.

So this time round for the 0-3 month stage I am buying separates - i.e. tops without the poppers under the bottom and separate trousers/leggings with feet that can be whisked off without having to change the top half of baby. But I reckon 8 'ensembles' (whether vests and sleeper suits or tops and leggings) in total is more than sufficient. Try a mixture of garments and see which you get on with best!

I found that too multiplex but the general consensus on here seems to be that sleepsuits are easier!

I always kept a vest on DS though until he was about 6 months old and it got hotter (October baby) because t-shirts etc ride up until they are walking and I didn't want him to get cold, also it was nice and soft and smooth rather than a waistband of some trousers etc. Annoying when they do an up-the-back poo though!
