Glucose test?

Hi all Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the glucose test? I'm 26 weeks with my first, and saw my mw the other day. She mentioned that I should cancel my appointment that was scheduled for the 6th April, and re-arrange for the week after as she wants to take blood and feels that closer to 28 weeks would be better for this.

I can't figure out why though After doing a bit of googling, I could only really come up with the glucose test being done between 24-28 weeks, but all I've read about the GT seems to say that you have to drink a liquid, then wait for approx. an hour, but as I'm only going along to the usual mw clinic at my surgery, I doubt that this'll happen.

Is there any way that she could be testing my blood for glucose at the next appointment? Don't get me wrong, I'm not so bothered about having it done, I'm just confused that if she can and will be testing for glucose why she hasn't said so.

Confused Sorry in advancce for the daft question!

I thought the GTT was not done routinely nowadays?

Flossie69 · 31/03/2010 12:29

Hi Gilly

You have routine general bloods taken at 28 weeks, and if these show raised glucose, they send you the glucose test with the drink etc, to do a glucose load test.

The reason I know this is I have just had a call from my midwife to say my levels were high, and I need to do this. I am 29 weeks at the mo.

I am hoping that my glucose was high because I had a too much sugar at breakfast, and not that I have gestational diabetes, but I guess I shall have to wait and see. It would be good to know if anyone else out there has had the test, and how you got on?

I am sure you will get on just fine, Gilly

28 week bloods in my area are for:

Blood Type
Blood Count (will show if you are anaemic etc)
"Lucozade" Test.

Lucozade test is a fairly crude test of your glucose tolerence. Yes, you have to drink a defined amount of lucozade 1 hour before the blood test. If you "fail" this, then you will be referred for a full GTT where you fast the night before then drink a sugary drink and have a number of tests done over the next few hours to see how the glucose levels fall.

Ahh, Flossie, that makes sense! I think I'm loosing my brain, and all ability to think rationally sometimes! That's a shame aboutyou having a higher level, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that everything's fine and that you don't have GD

hi, i had the glucose test i think it was 28 weeks. I was offered it because my dad has diabetes.

had to have nothing to eat/drink except a bit of water since the midnight the night before, then in the morning drink a specific amount of lucozade (bleggghh hate the stuff).

then go to the blood testing centre at the hospital and after precisely two hours had elapsed since i drink the lucozade they tested my blood for signs of GD.

definitely not routine for all women. also, if the mw wants you to do the test she will have to be specific as if you foul up the timings you'll have to go back another day and try again.

I have just had mine done at 28 weeks because DS1 was so large, it can induce GD when pregnant with no2.

There are 2 tests - a long one and a short one! I had the long one.

You can not eat anything from 10pm the night before. I then had to get to the hospital for 8.40am, where they take some blood (to calculate your fasting blood sugar level). You are then asked to drink about a pint of lucozade as quickly as you can and then you have to wait another 2 hours (take lots of magazines!).

After 2 hours, your bloods are taken again. About 30 minutes later they gave me the result (all fine!).

The only thing I would say is that it made me really nauseous and gave me quite a bad headache for the day. Drink plenty of water throughout and take a filling sandwich or similar for after the test!

Good luck

dizzydixies · 31/03/2010 12:42

god lucky you with the lucozade, the stopped using that up here 7yrs ago - we now have the most sickly sweet syrup to drink [bleurgh]

I had two massive babies without GD and DD3 was smaller but I had GD - was managed with diet and went after DD3 was born

take a good book and something to eat for straight after

pigleychez · 31/03/2010 13:41

I had the GTT with both my babies

With DD I had consistantly high sugar levels in my sample so was sent along.
It was fasting from midnight the night before, drink 490mls of Lucozade then go for a blood test an hour later.
It came back ok despite still having high sugar levels every check up.

In this pregnancy again ive had high readings in my samples and my Dad has been diagnosed with Diabetes since DD's birth.
This time i accidently (babybrain) drank the wrong flavour lucozade! and the test came back high, but not too high. I have seen a consultant and she has agreed for me to have a repeat test at 34 weeks (next week) if I continue to have high sample readings and to check the effects of the wrong flavour.

Still getting high readings so guess ill be up the hospital again for the GTT next week.
Fingers crossed thats ok.

I tried one week cutting out almost all the sugar in my diet. I was very strict and amazed to see my readings were higher than ever!!

girlsyearapart · 31/03/2010 13:44

ooh I'm all confused now, got told at my 22 wk scan and consultant apt that I have to go back in at 28 wks to have growth scan and a glucose blood test.

The apt is not until 13.30 so surely can't be a fasting one? please dont make me have to drink Lucozade. Bleurgh.

Having the test as had a 9lb er who was 11 days early and my first was 8.5lb on due date.
