Crap, think DS has chicken pox

To cap it all off, on hols but flying home today. DS (2) has had mild fever and runny nose, loss of appetite, now has spots and blisters appearing.
Having a mild panic attack here, although I did have it as a child. Am I immune then?
Poor wee lamb though....

You are immune if you had it as a child. Adults do not get chicken pox, they get shingles. If you go to check in for a flight with a baby with chicken pox you will be denied boarding as it is highly contagious. It would be very dangerous for pregnant mothers or anyone who might be immunocompromised. I would speak to the airline and they may allow you to re-arrange your flights considering the circumstances. If not you will need to claim on insurance.

I know, we shouldn't fly. Oh bo**ks

I know it SUCKS, my DD always has a knack for getting ill the day before or day of going on holiday. I am sure that she does it just to test me!

muddler · 31/03/2010 09:18

The pregnancy thing has freaked me out a bit though, I am 23 weeks and I know that this is a danger zone for chicken pox - might just call GP in case. And try to find out spanish for calamine lotion!

Ohhhh...your pregnant. If you had it I am sure that you will be fine, but to settle my nerves I would call the GP as well. Can't help you on the Spanish for Calamine, though. LOL Baking soda in the bath works well too, that may be easier to translate.

giddly · 31/03/2010 09:30

Spanish for calomine is calomina - although realise this is probably he least of our problems!
Worth just ringing GP to put mind at rest over your pregnancy, but really shouldn't be a problem if you've had it.

libelulle · 31/03/2010 09:33

If you've had them as a child you're almost certainly immune. I supposedly didn't have them as a child but am still immune - if you're worried you could ask for the blood test which will confirm immunity. But actually at 23 weeks you're pretty much OUT of the danger zone - all the info I've seen (and I had a cp scare during 1st pregnancy so checked carefully with docs) is that after 20 weeks your risk is minimal to non-existent.

But Canuck - adults certainly do get chicken pox (a friend had them and was ill for weeks) but only if they aren't immune from previous exposure.

mackerel · 31/03/2010 09:34

Don't worry. I've had 4 and in two pregnancies at least one child had chicken pox. It's fine if you've had it and I think only a worry at the beginning and end (delivery due).

libelulle · 31/03/2010 09:34

but what a pain about the flying, you poor thing!

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2010 10:06

My son's just had it and I'm 18weeks. I was told as I've had it I am immune and not to worry about me or the baby. The only reason to worry is if you get any spots which you shouldn't as you've had it before.

EMS23 · 31/03/2010 10:21

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and my DSS has got it currently. The doctor wasn't worried at all because i've had it so am immune.

dizzydixies · 31/03/2010 12:47

I've had it as a child AND AGAIN as an adult however I am a freak of medical nature

it is only an issue at the beginning of pregnancy and right before giving birth so you should be fine

your immunity will also be better is you have had it previously

I'm 9+4 and DD3 was diagnosed with it this morning so conversation with Dr fresh in my mind from today

hope he's feeling ok soon

muddler · 31/03/2010 22:01

Thanks for reassurance everyone

Both my DS's had it when i was only 5 weeks. Was told by GP that as I had them I was immune and not to worry.
2 of you have mentioned that it is an issue in the early stages tho? Why?

sonsmum · 01/04/2010 14:30

i had chicken pox as an adult, was 8 weeks pregnant. Dr gave me an immunoglobulin injection to stave off an attack once i knew i was exposed to the pox by DS, (still got the pox but perhaps made it a more mild attack. Was worried throughout pregnancy. Though risk is low, if you are unlucky, efects are severe. Had multiple scans to check. Happy ending: DC turned out perfect.

lifeinthesun · 01/04/2010 16:01

I wouldn't worry if you have had chicken pox as will be immune. Not sure if the same in spanish but chicken pox in portuguese is varicella, just incase they dont understand you in the pharmacy!
