Hello

Am new to Mumsnet. Have been reading the topics for a while but haven't posted before. Am 13.5 weeks down the line (first time), due Dec 31st (am hoping it will be a week or so late or at least 2 weeks early!). Have had a rough time so far - only able to keep one foodstuff down consistently (the clue is in my name!). Was wondering, when do people go into maternity clothes generally? Am exhausting my supply of bigger clothes (usually saved for hangover days) and my normal clothes are generally pinching a bit. But a friend tells me she didn't need them to month 6! Can't wait that long.....

hi ngpy, i am 14.3 weeks and am in same situation. Have bought 2 pairs of mega cheap black trousers in new look 2 sizes bigger than usual, i have 1 elasticated waistband, and have bought a belly belt which is really good- tho I can't see myself using it all the way through it's been great for this "waistband way to tight to even think about fastening/not big enough to warrant maternity stuff". i can't believe how much more quickly i have expanded (ds is 3) this time- it's like all my muscles (what there is of them ) have just gone pplluugh! i say, enjoy your pregnancy, and go for whatever is comfy for you. will it make a difference do you think to how others are with you? how were they awful last time? and finally, are you another mumsnetter with a pseudonym for the pregancy?!

Now 18 weeks with my 3rd, been in mat'y clothes about 10 days... I think it was similar in my previous pregnancies. I have some 'bigger' trousers in my closet that got me to 16-17 weeks. The mat'y clothes are really still too big, which is a nuisance. Nobody seems to be guessing yet, maybe because I wear long shirts that cover my slowly-emerging bump.

I struggled to fit into my ususal stuff at around 10 weeks. Tried bigger sizes but made me look huge on the hips. I did the undone trouser look for a couple of weeks but got fed up of hitching them up! So now I wear some maternity trousers rolled over and they look cool cos they at least fit on the hips! I really am not bothered by 'how long I can last without' I'm getting my money's worth and I'm comfortable!
Get them when you're ready!!

I am 11.3 weeks, and had to buy some new jeans in a size larger this weekend!! I was starting to feel uncomfortable in my usual size. I have also bought some velour joggers which I will probably start wearing soon. I end up looking so scruffy, and that's what I hate about this stage of pregnancy.

SpringChicken · 12/01/2004 09:23

Can't really offer any advice as i am only 14+1 with 1st.
All of my jeans still fit me as they fit under my bulge (Can't call it a bump just yet) but only 1 pair of black trouser fit me which i am wearing today. I have one maternity top which a friend gave me which i am also wearing today - it fits me fine but i feel like a bit of a fraud not having a huge great big bump bulging in front of me

Anyway, with the rate i am expanding at present i think i will be able to get away with normal clothes for another 4 weeks or so but then will have to move onto maternity wear all the time.

You mean there is hope one actually wears maternity clothes?

The highest weight I was at full term was 9 and 1/2 stones. I wanted the weight to stay on, not naturally at the tummy area, just any weight, but I was unlucky. All my life people told me, "WAIT UNTIL YOU GET PREGNANT, YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU GAINED". So I was rather disappointed I kept nothing.

I only used those jogging pants because they were elasticized and my tummy went to about 44 inches from a 26, at about 4 months. I used lots of clothes on the bias. You know those summer type dresses with no darts. A dress on the bias will take you into several sizes and can be pre and post pregnancy as it just drapes over the body. I hated anything across my waistline so the waist had to be above or below my huge bump.

I would tell anyone not to buy maternity clothes but those with a bias cut and they will fit like a dream. I have a skirt with an angle hemline which I was able to use like a dress (pulled over my bust) and at times it was a floor length long skirt during different stages of the prenancy.

This thread has given me hope that one does wear maternity clothes during pregnancy, only thing being it is the second child..... hmmm, hands full with this one makes me wonder about a second.

When the bit of elastic you've been using between your jeans button and buttonhole (long t-shirt over to cover) pings off during lunch with your in-laws and plops into your f-i-l's glass of wine.

It was at about 20 weeks with ds (5 weeks with dd).

LOL, Wilbur.
But what did you wear on your legs in winter, GenT? Presumably you didn't only wear jogging bottoms for 5 months! May I ask how tall & what weight are you usually? I'm usually called skinny, but I still needed maternity leggings & trousers.

GenT · 12/01/2004 17:28

I had jogging bottoms in navy, beige, black and grey. The legs were fitted or loose. Even thought he fabric was a bit on the thn side for winter I got away wearing leggings during winter. If I was out, it was usually from the car to wherever indoors and vice versa. If out for long periods I wore my long coat. Don't thnk I was extremely cold as it don't really get cold here. I know, I have spent winters in Chicago and Canada, now that is cold. Maybe my blood is able to stand temperatures now.

I am 5'6" and weigh only 8 stones 4 lbs now. I used to be 7 1/2. Think about getting a skipping rope for excercise because I am downright lazy now where exercise is concerned, couldn't be botheres. Only pelvic floor is of importance now.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the replies so far. I did think about getting a belly belt, but then would need very long clothes to hide it, and I haven't seen those either.

Think I need a focused shopping trip next weekend, instead of p$$*g about on the net...
