Pregnancy AFTER gallstones?

Is there anyone who is/has been pregnant after having had their gallbladder removed? I had mine out in Nov last year, and am now 10 weeks pg. I have had a few cramps since the surgery, sometimes have to run to loo, etc, but at the moment the cramps seem to be much more frequent and v painful. And while I am happy not to live in fear of a gallbladder attack, I'm not particularly happy! I know pg can make gallbladder disease worse because it makes the gallbladder sluggish, but I wonder if pg is also causing something to do with my bile/bile ducts, etc?

Anyway, if anyone has suffered the same thing it would be good to know. I guess I should also go back to the same diet that I followed when I had a gallbladder - low fat, no meat, etc

Thanks!

Hi
I had my gallbladder removed about a year before falling pregnant. Can't say it caused me any problems during pregnancy although towards the end I did suffer from slightly upset tummy feeling and needing the loo often but couldn't say for sure that this was related.
One thing I can say is that giving birth is nowhere near as painful as having a gallstone attack!

Thanks. I think I am going to go to the doctors this week, although I can't imagine there is much they can suggest. It also feels like since I got pg, I am either constipated or the other way, so it is obviously really effecting my digestion.

re: birth. I quite agree. I have one DS, and although he was born by EMCS, I went through the labour beforehand and can honestly say that the attacks were worse because as you know, they were continuous, not like contractions! I wasn't diagnosed for 2 years and then tried natural remedies for another year and had an attack roughly every month, so I really feel like birth will be a doddle in comparison!!!

I had keyhole removal of my gallbladder when my DD1 was 4 months. First attack only 4 weeks after CS....paramedics thought there was a surgical instrument left inside me! It was the first night out for a meal since her birth and I passed out with the pain when we got home. I did a fat free diet until surgery but still had attacks regularly.

Enough of that, I didn't suffer with fatty food going straight through me until I became pregnant with DD2 5 months later. I had dull pain in my back where my gallstone attacks used to be and stomach cramps if I ate high fat food. Both me and DH have had this op and we still can't tolerate the things we used to eat. He suffers more than I do but neither of us have been back to our GP to see if there is a problem as we only have a dodgy tum when we have a rich meal. I think that I can control it by diet and found it easier to eat 5 smaller meals ( I am a SAHM ) rather than the 2 largish meals I used to put away.

The consultant I saw post op said that there was a 10% chance of this side effect due to the gallbladder having a function and the body can only cope with losing it by getting rid of fat in the quickest way it knows.

Low fat it is then!...

I had my gallbladder removed in 2004 and am now 14 weeks pregnant with my first. Have had no problems since the surgery at all. If you've been having cramps since the surgery (whether or not they have got worse with pregnancy) sounds like a trip back to the surgeon or the GI consultant who referred you for surgery is a good idea. Sometimes you can get bile salts diarrhea after gall bladder removal. There is a drug in sachet form (mix it up with water and drink) that helps by absorbing the bile salts so that they don't irritate your intestine. Can't remember what it's called (sorry). And have no idea whether it is OK for pregnancy (sorry again). Good luck and feel better!

Has anyone else struggled with this. Gallbladder removed 18 months ago, 6+2 pregnant and all my symptoms are back which I haven't had since removal.. running to the toilet with IBS, acid reflux if I lean over etc.. it's awful. Any suggestions?!
