Hi, I am 32 weeks and have just had my 4th scan and registrar appointment. Today they told me that my baby is already 5ilbs 3oz and that he may be absorbing too much sugar which is making him put weight on? I have been advised to cut all sugars and follow a low GI food plan. Has anyone else been through this and how did you cope???

Worried!

Not sure if this helps but I was told my baby was going to be 9lbs plus and I was terrified. DS turned out to be 7lb 4oz, just a little different x

I had my 32 week scan on Tuesday and they estimated that the baby's weight was over 5lbs - consequently as my GTT was normal they have got me measuring my blood sugars 6 times a day. I wouldn't worry - estimated weights can be 25% out either way, they won't really know until baby comes out. Following a low GI food plan is not as scary as it sounds (c:

I don't think that 5.3 is huge for a 32 week old baby. Generally babies put on half a pound a week in the womb so if your baby went full term he would be just over 9lb which is on the large side but not massive.

Ds was scanned at 33 weeks and weighed just over 5lb he was born at 37 weeks and weighed 6.14, as he was early we were glad of the extra weight.

Just as a bit of an aside, my DD was born in Dec, 41+1 and was 9lb 13oz and the labour was not too bad (as far as labours go!). So if your MW or consultant says you are going to have a big baby, don't think that autoatically means it will be an horrendous experience! Good luck.

I'd stick to the diet you've been recommended, it can't do any harm, but don't worry about the size of the baby - these scan measurements are not known for accuracy!

I had the GTT test too, was negative. DS grew loads in the last few weeks (at 41+6 the fundal height was 46! the extra tummy flab didn't help!) but the day I gave birth, Dr felt my tummy and said "oh don't worry, he's not that big!" - oh well, so much for that, he was 11lb 14oz! So there's really no way they can tell for certain. There's no point worrying.

And actually, the birth was pretty quick, no tearing either. It can be easier than having a tiny baby as the weight helps them along apparently!

Hi,
At my 34 weeks mw appointment I was told that they think my baby is around 6lb and will be at least an 8lber at birth - although they did say these things are very inaccurate.

I had some sugar in my sample so got sent for a blood test but haven't heard anything back which apparently should mean all is fine - just a big baby I guess.

I wasn't told to change my diet at all though.

They thought I was diabetic when pregnant and ran loads of tests, but all was ok. I was massive - tests and more tests and scans and the scan said that baby was huge. Then we saw consultant about going in early for elcs as baby was so big. She felt the bump and reckoned it was " a six pounder".

Same consultant delivered my 10lb 9 er by emcs at 41 weeks.

Turns out he had absorbed too much sugar inside and that's how he got so big.

I was pretty annoyed at them letting me go to term with it, but I can say that because I dug my heels in with my midwife, they kept a close eye on me. I would do the same if I were you.
Keep vocal

My MW wants me to avoid high GI foods [looks at chocolate milk on desk guiltily]

There's a history of 8lb and 10lb babies in my family, and apparently I'm measuring up to a week ahead in terms of size (am 22wks). She suggested that I avoid high GI foods, and if I do 'need to indulge' in sweets, to tamp down the glucose spike with something low-GI (i.e. drink some semiskimmed milk with a slice of cake). I've taken the tamping-down advice rather more to heart than the 'avoid refined sugars and any white bread/pasta/potatoes' advice, I'm afraid, but I keep telling myself I'll be more careful as I approach the Gestational Diabetes test...

My GTT test was normal too, but keep getting glucose traces in my wee so consultant sent me for another blood test (not GTT as they wont do it after 30weeks at my hospital, but a similar test) which was also normal. Had a growth scan anyway at 33weeks and baby is already 4.9pounds. I thought that was loads especially as they say they gain around 0.5pounds per week from now, but reading these posts it doesn't sound too abnormal.

Big babies are wonderful! My first was 9lb, born at term, and my second was 10lb, born at 38 weeks. Both were delivered vaginally with no problems. I didn't even tear and had no stitches. I will admit, it did hurt a bit mind...

Ivykaty44 · 27/03/2010 16:33

i was told at 32 week scan that dd was 7ilb2oz and at 39 weeks she was born and 9ilb1oz so no really worries there - plus bigger babies doesn't mean diffiuclt birth.

my gran had a really easy bitrht with her first at 10 and a half pounds but a really difficuly brith with her second at 7and a half pounds - so its not an indication of ease!
