Six weeks and bleeding

I've been getting crampy feelings all day and have just been to the toilet and there is some blood in my discharge. It's not heavy, palish brown. What should I do? I'm really scared. I'm six weeks today.

Hi, dont panic, and ring your midwife, brown blood is usually fine if it goes bright red then that is not a good sign although saying that i bled at 12 week and it was bright red and i am fine, ring your midwife and see what she says

leawesty · 25/03/2010 16:03

take care and let me know how you get on xx

dorcas111 · 25/03/2010 16:27

I don't have a midwife yet, I only went to the doctors yesterday, who should I call instead? Oh and thanks for replying. I'm trying not to panic but I'm really frightened

It's ok, has it got any worse? I have had 3 mc so i know how you are feeling, would you be able to ring your drs or ring the early pregnancy unit at your local hospital?

Olivetti · 25/03/2010 16:35

Dorcas - I had what sounds like the exact same symptoms on Sunday night, at which stage I was 6 +5. I went to my local a and e immediately, and ended up in the early pregnancy unit - had an examination and then a scan two days later and all was fine, so far. They said it is very common at this stage. I would just walk in to A and E if you can. Wishing you all the very best.

dorcas111 · 25/03/2010 16:35

No it's not got worse, and the cramps have eased off although I still feel sensitive in my lower abdomen. I'll see if I can find a number for an early pregnancy unit.

ring the hospital direct they will give you the number or put you through, just try stay relaxed and put your feet up while you get an appointment to go keep me informed of how you get on, wishing you all the very best Lea xx

I have just had a miscarriage at 11 weeks and it looks like it actually happened maybe at 8 weeks or earlier but only expelling now. I did spot at 8 weeks but GP said not to worry but when I spoke to doctor today at my scan she said always come and have an early scan if you experience cramps or bleeding no matter how severe, just to be safe. So I would go and get an early scan if I was you, it will likely be fine as many women bleed through out their pregnancies but its better to know now then weeks later.

Good luck!

soozlewoozle · 25/03/2010 16:43

Hi there,

I had the exact same problem this morning, same week etc.. I phoned the midwife number the doctors had given me, they sent me back to the doctors who got me an emergency scan at the hospital.. Thankfully everything was ok..

It's definitely worth getting it checked even if just to put your mind at rest, good luck

gorgeousgirl · 25/03/2010 17:30

I've had bleeding at 6 and 8 weeks. So far so good (fingers crossed as I'm 11 weeks now). Ring the Dr and ask for a referral to the early pregnancy unit for an early scan. Every bleed should be checked out (I was told).

Good look. In my last pregnancy (when I bled at 6,7 and 8 weeks), I found a statistic that 1 in 4 people have bleeding, but only 1 in for of these go on to miscarry. Can't remember where I read it, and don;t want to search in case the statistic turns out to be wrong.. But I have always hung onto it.

Hope all goes well xx

Hi there, I had exactly the same at 6 weeks. I just went to A&E and said that my GP had advised me to go there, otherwise they wouldnt have seen me. Got a scan and everything seemed ok but there was no heartbeat. They booked me in for another scan a week later. At 7 weeks we saw the heartbeat but I bled for 2 weeks(brown blood). Im now 13 weeks and everything is going ok. Fingers crossed!! Good luck!

dorcas111 · 25/03/2010 20:23

Well, I called the early pregnancy unit and they told me to go to A and E, so I went down they did a few tests and an internal exam. They've sent my notes to the scanning unit and I should be called in for an early scan next week. I'm still bleeding a bit, it's not heavy but more palish pink than brown. I 'm so worried- the doctor said some bleeding is normal which gives me hope but I'm afraid to get too hopeful. It's good to hear that other people have been through this and carried on with the pregnancy. Feel very tired and upset.

it's shocking how long they make you wait mine was 2 days but still 2 days of hell! I hope you are ok just try and rest as much as you can If you want to talk you know where iam xx

leawesty · 26/03/2010 08:29

docras111, how are you this morning?

leawesty · 26/03/2010 08:30

sorry spelt your name wrong

KFW · 26/03/2010 08:59

Hi Dorcas. I am sorry to hear you are going through this. I have had 3 miscarriages so I am familiar with early pregnancy stress. BUT please dont worry. Pinkish brownish stuff isnt necessarily bad. If you can't wait for your scan (and I dont blame you - if you're anything like me every trip to the loo is full of anxiety), why dont you see if you can get to an EPAU which deals with people on arrival? I dont know where you live, but if for example you live near Tooting in London, you can go to St George's hospital Monday to Saturday between 08:30am and 11:00am and they will just see you. You don't need a referral letter from GP or anything. You might want to check out this site (or similar depending where you live)- you could call one near you and see if they need a GP referral letter. www.earlypregnancy.org.uk/findus2.asp?region=South%20East
I know it's easy to say, but try not to worry too much.
Sending best wishes and positive vibes.
I am now 9+1 in my fourth pregnancy. Have had one big bleed (last week) but the little bean still appears to be hanging in there. It's a stressful time but we'll get through it.

dorcas111 · 26/03/2010 10:11

Thanks for all your messages. I had a small bleed at seven last night, then nothing until a heavier bleed at about eight this morning. I was cramping all last night and this morning. It wasn't loads but there was a bit of clotting and it was dark red. I think what is scaring me most is the fact that there is cramping and bleeding- every book I read seems to say that bleeding is normal unless accompanied by cramps. I just feel very tender down there. I'm trying to stay positive but I keep bursting into tears and then I worry that my stress might make things worse. I'm going to check out finding somewhere I can go for a scan earlier- it feels like a lifetime until next week

I wanted to let you know that i had bleeding exactly the same as you at 6 weeks-my doctor told me i was miscarrying but didnt refer me to an epu or suggest i do another test.It turns out i never miscarried, it was a normal bleed and i was still pregnant-i now have 8 week old twins. Please dont necessarily think the worst, my midwife said 6 week bleeds are common-i hope everything turns out ok,keep us informed.xx

dorcas111 · 26/03/2010 17:03

Well I've just been for a scan and they have said it's definitely not a miscarriage, but the foetus was too small to detect a heart beat so it is a pregnancy of uncertain viability. Which I think means that it may not be as far along as I thought? Or not progressing, which I suppose is worst case scenario. I have another scan in ten days to check. I'm not sure how to feel really. I still keep getting cramps which is scary.

OP posts:
NumptyMum · 26/03/2010 17:18

I'm glad you got a scan sooner - I think the term 'uncertain viability' is a way of covering their back. I had a bleed this pregnancy around 6.5 wks and when I went for my scan the sonographer warned me that they may well not see a heartbeat yet. So I guess they can't commit to saying one way or the other - but it does NOT mean things are bad. Just they can't take the risk of saying anything for certain.

I hope it goes well. I'm now 25 weeks and all is fine.

gorgeousgirl · 26/03/2010 18:28

Don't forget cramps can be totally normal - a symptom of extra blood to the area, and growing. Hope all works out for you. xxx
