I'm 31+6 and got a really shitty cough and cold AGAIN! This one started on Wednesday but only got rid of a previous one about a week before so feeling ultra whingy! I'm taking paracetamol and lockets and soothers have become my friends, but I'm bored of hacking away all the time. What can I take?

I went to see pharmacist about similar thing a week or two ago and HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME COUGH MEDICINE because, get this, IT CONTAINS ALCOHOL!!!! I was so cross. I mean, I imagine the levels of alcohol are so low you would have to down an entire bottle to get even the smallest amount. But now that apparantly the latest guidelines are we should not drink at all in pregnancy (I can't keep up!), them's the rules.

I did find rubbing Vick's vaporub on my chest and neck helped soothe the coughing a bit, as did the menthol sweets, Tunes, Halls and the like.

Hope you get better soon.

Cough medicines Do. Not. Work.

Well, no better than any hot drink of your choice with honey works.

Codeine or other morphine containing meds (such as Phocodine linctus) do suppress a cough, but are truly not suitable for pregnancy.

Being able to cough prevents a simple viral infection from turning into a lower respiratory infection as coughing is an important defense mechanism by which your lungs clear themselves. So, yes, a PITA, especially when you are pregnant (and pee yourself with every cough - or was that just me ??), but best to make your peace with it.

I am a bit at chemist who would not give cough bottle because of alcohol content, but they do work to v strict guidelines and rules that they cannot stray from.

My gran used to make us drink hot onion juice... - you did NOT dare cough around her, believe me .

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi, I sympathise with you - had a really bad cough about 7 weeks ago and it took me 2 visits to the doctor and one to the midwife before anyone would tell me anything about this. They wouldn't give any advice over the phone.

It was an absolutely miserable time as (I'd had a great pregnancy until then) and I was convinced I was going to crack a rib with coughing.

In short, the only syrup type things they were happy to suggest were the most basic lemon and glycerine things (taste like sugar) to soothe the throat. None of them seemed worried about alcohol in the stronger ones but one doctor said she could not recommend anything else because although most were probably fine (I wanted to take an expectorant one) she could not be sure that sufficient research had been carried out into any side effects on pregnant women.

Ultimately I did manage to get one sympathetic doctor who prescribed a nasal spray and inhaler as my breathing was really bad, but it still took me 4 weeks to get over it and I was off work for about 10 days. I sympathise with you though - it was absolutely miserable. I also took strepsils and they told me to stay hydrated, so lots of water and lemon and honey drinks, and they suggested steam inhalation. The only positive is that everyone agreed having this was not going to affect the babies in anyway.

I really hope that you feel better soon. I remember it just felt like the worst thing ever but it was "only a cold"!. Get well soon.

Just been to the chemist and to the pharmacist advised Simple Linctus so I bought a big bottle (£1.45 ) But just got back home, checked the babble on the side, and it says amongst other things, "harmful to pregnant ladies" Err!?

There is cough syrup which is suitable during pregnancy - think its Venos. Actually says its ok for pg women on the side of the bottle.

But you could always make lemon and honey drink?

simple linctus has alcohol in it which is why it says not suitable for pregnant women.
i have happily taken it when pregnant (and i work in a pharmacy too )basically it's similar to the liquid inside the middle of halls soothers
