wORRIED ABOUT BLOOD TEST RESULTS

I had some further blood tests done yesterday by my Midwife and she gave me a copy of my booking blood tests results too.

When I looked at them I have a low Hb, low PCV, low MCV, low MCH and only just over the line for MCHC (range is 32.0 - 34.0 and I am 32.4)

On the bottom of the results is says 'POss iron deficiency and/or alpha+ thalassaemia carrier. No evidence of sickle haemoglobin. Partner testing not required. Iron status should be checked. Yesterday I have ferritina nd folate levels checked..

So, I have in all likliehood got anaemia right? this is my fourth baby and I have nevr had it before and surely someone would have noticed before if I had thalassaemia????? Normally very pragmatic about medical stuff as I do have a fair bit of medical knowledge but this is out of my range. What I do remember is that thalassaemia is related to hydrops and that is not good - so small not yet panicky red light is on in my mind.

I was really hoping that someone here could shed some light

could you give your GP a call and get a telephone consultation to discuss it? or your midwife even?

surely they could explain it for you?

i think if there was an immediate cause for concern your gp would be trying to get in touch with you - thats how it works at our practice.

but id talk it through with a GP to put your mind at rest.

thanks

if this is 4th pregnancy would seem unlikely that you are thalessemia carrier as it would have been picked up before but I agree with other poster best to talk to GP.
