36 weeks back to back baby

Hello, I've just had a scan at 36 weeks and been told (as at my 30 week scan) that the baby is lying back to back. This is my 2nd baby and with my first I was lucky enough to have a quick, natural birth without any real problems. Can anyone advise if there's a good chance of the baby turning and anything I can do to help him/her along please? I'm so far doing the usual lying over swiss ball and spending time on all fours. I'm very worried about going through a back to back labour and delivery given that my back is already in tatters from lugging heavy toddler around. Thanks so much.

sounds like you know what to do:
no leaning back, no lying on back, no sitting in sofa - when you are watching TV sit on ball, lots of swaying on all fours, also try and swim as often as possible. see spinningbabies site for more info.

DS was back to back. I tried everything to turn him before I went into labour but to no avail. He did turn during labour though and came out the right way in the end (good job really - I dread to think what sort of mess a 10lb 5 oz OP baby would make to my fanjo )

not really given that I currently lounging on sofa! that love affair will have to stop! thanks for that.

My son was back to back, I spent a lot of the last few weeks on all fours and over my birthing ball, walked a lot but he refused to turn!

I had to be induced in the end, which worked initially very quickly but I felt the need to push (apparently common in back to back labours) and was told I was fully dilated. I pushed for 1 1/2 hours until the midwives changed shift when after another internal I was told I was only 5cms dilated and to stop. I am sure this has a lot to do with my long labour and eventually having a syntocinon drip and epidural.

He did not turn during labour and was born face up but I pushed him out on my own and had no tearing to my perinium just a small tear in my labia.

I don't feel it was particularly hard on my back though and had all of my contractions in the front, no back pain at all. I also feel that me spending a lot of time on myback being monitored because I was induced didn't help with the chances of him turning during labour. I did try to get onto all fours and walk as I was more comfortable but everytime I moved they couldn't find the babies heartbeat so on my back I stayed!

Good luck with it all, don't know anyone else who's baby turned but hopefully more people will be able to give you more hope of turning your baby!

I gave birth to 8lb10oz OP ds1 naturally and it was fine, he never turned so was born facing the wrong way but it was fine, oddly the back ache was less than with my first labour although the pain towards the end was pretty intense.

Hi DS1 was back to back & he turned as he came out & didnt particularly feel it in my back to be honest. Im 37wks with DS2 now & last week he was back to back too, so hoping for the same. As long as he is head down im not too worried!

I've had one right way round labour ( dc 1) and one back to back

the pain was just different with the second all of the pain was in my back but I had also been lugging a heavy toddler around and found this ok.
both deliveries were normal and I did tear with both but with number 2 especially I should have listened to the midwives when they told me to pant . even with this it was much less that with my first birth

try and turn your little one but its not the end of the world if you can't and you can still have the birth you want

My son was back to back and unfortunately didn't turn in labour, but then he never engaged either at 40+16 as he had the cord wrapped around him...

Anyway, if you goggle spinning babies you'll find good suggestions for exercises/sitting positions that can encourage baby to turn before labour starts. Sitting backwards on a dining chair was by far the most comfy imho.
