I don't get any home visits...

...from the Midwife. I only ask because I've seen many posts on here from others about their home visits. I'm in Surrey, is it a locality thing or am I suppose to arrange this myself? I'm 31+2, next MW appointment at 34 weeks.

I think it's a locality thing. I had no ante-natal home visits when expecting DS in London but when recently pregnant with DD in Hampshire the community midwife did home visits from 38 weeks.

If you're planning a home birth, though, you should get home visits (at least one, anyway).

I'm in West London and I was amazed to read on here that people get home visits - after 3 pregnancies at 2 different hospitals I was made to feel grateful for them bothering to turn up to the clinic to see me. Another example of postcode lottery....

I'm in Surrey and also amazed to hear about home visits. Obviously doesn't happen here. Midwives at our surgery are available for three hours a week - if you can't make that particular day/time then tough! I have resorted to seeing the GP as they seem to be more readily accessible.

No home visits in Derbyshire, where I live either!

first1 · 17/03/2010 09:10

Same numbertwo. The MW is at my surgery for two hours on a Thursday. So you've got about 20 ladies trying to be seen each week. You get the feeling not to bother taking your coat off because it wastes your precious 5min appointment!

I had DD in South London, and attended the midwife clinic at the health centre for all appointments.

we've moved up North, and here the midwife even did my booking appointment at home. very handy and all, but if I'm honest I'm not sure that's a great use of resources.

Hi first - our day is Friday and I think the system changed when they centralised all the midwives and health visitors into the larger towns (where I am is classified as a "village"). I know what you mean about the precious 5 mins and imagine trying to get anything sensible done in that time with a couple of toddlers in tow!

btw - on the upside I always get to see the same person and she's lovely.

Mine came to see me at home after the baby was born, though not for antenatal appts. Did you not get home visits post natally either?

Chynah · 17/03/2010 10:20

I'm Surrey too. Didn't get any home visits last time til after the birth and no plans for any antenatal ones this time either (36 weeks).

IHaveABlueCar · 17/03/2010 10:22

I got two post natal visits at home from a mw (including one who made me cry and persuaded me to stop bfing ), then a hv came at 6 weeks I've never seen or heard from a hv since and my youngest is almost 2.

tartyhighheels · 17/03/2010 10:30

I am in West Sussex and planning thrid homebirth and only have home visits - I do have to pop and see a consultant tomorrow but apart from that all my care is done here...

lucky me

GwennieF · 17/03/2010 21:56

I'm in Northumberland and 24 weeks with DC2. Didn't have any antenatal home visits, but MW visited every 2 days postnatal until handover to HV at 10 days. HV visited every week until 6 weeks and have had scheduled visits at 6 and 12 months, but there were weekly BF clinics where I'd get DS1 weighed and have chat/drink with other mothers at similar stage. I also had a couple of home visits from the BF counsellor as I was having problems initially with latch/cracked nipples...
I feel am pretty lucky with the support we get

ShowOfHands · 17/03/2010 22:00

I only had home visits once I'd booked the homebirth in at 37 weeks.

thisisyesterday · 17/03/2010 22:03

no, i didn't have home visits with any of my 3 pregnancies.

i don't think it's standard anywhere, unless you have a good reason to request home visits (ie, you can't get to the surgery for some reason)

you would have a visit if you're planning a home birth tyhouh

thisisyesterday · 17/03/2010 22:04

i am in west sussex btw

Lionstar · 17/03/2010 22:07

I had home visits here in Hampshire - but I had a home birth booked each time, don't know if they are offered as standard.

MumNWLondon · 18/03/2010 11:51

I haven't had any either (other than postnatally) and this is my 3rd pregnancy. If I wanted a home birth they do home visits from 37 weeks.

SmallShips · 18/03/2010 13:25

I'm in Hampshire (I.O.W) and have had home visits along with appointments at their surgery.

This is my 3rd so wasn't expecting much in the way of appointments, but I've had the best care this time around.

Bleatblurt · 18/03/2010 13:42

When I lived in Fife my midwife did a home visit to fill in the booking form! It was a new (large) form and she knew we had DS1 who was a toddler so came to the house to save us having to hang about at the hospital for hours with him. She was a very lurvely midwife though, really great throughout my pregnancies.
