I had my 36 week appointment with the MW this morning and after measuring my bump 3 times, she came up with 44cm, 41cm and 39cm (in that order). I'm 37 weeks on Monday. She has now said that there is a possibility that I may have excess amniotic fluid and is going to refer me for a scan to check.

The reason I am a bit concerned is that I have received quite a poor standard of care from all the medical professionals who deal with me up until now and I'm not confident at all in their diagnostic abilities.

I was last seen by another MW at 32 weeks (I hadn't seen my usual MW for 9 weeks before today) and nothing at all was mentioned about me being big for my dates.

Should I be worried? Can this condition really develop this quickly? My MW started going on about all the complications that can occur during labour and has quite frankly scared the shit out of me...

Apparently there is also a chance that I won't be seen for the scan for at least another week so I know I'm just going to go out of my mind until then.

It might also be worth mentioning that I have already had the GTT test which came back negative (I was referred due to family history/ethnic origin, not bump size) so it would be very surprising if this was diabetes-related.

bexxaa - that is exactly what I needed to hear! Bloody MW, scaring me half to death...

Also such a relief to hear that you LO is lovely and healthy and that labour was fine!

Thank you so much! I feel a bit better now.

I still haven't heard anything from the hospital! To make matter worse, my midwife is away all week so I'm going to have to chase it up some other way...

I wish I had a midwife like yours - it makes such a difference when someone you trust is handling your care. I'm not seeing my midwife again until next week (by which time I will be nearly 39 wks) so I'm assuming that she's not that worried. Or she's just negligent!

I had this but maybe you don't want to hear what happened if you are already worried.
You need to be realistic though and know the facts. M/W can't win, there would be complaints if they didn't tell you all scenarios.

I developedPH at around 36 weeks. I woke up one morning to find my bump was visibley bigger! When I saw my midwife a few days later she confirmed I was indeed very big for dates and I went straight to hospital for a scan.

The scan showed that my fluid levels were very high. I saw a dr who tld me all sorts of horror stories about the labour I was going to have and then snet me home feeling terrified! He did arrange for me to return two days later for GTT as an inpatient. As soon as I was admitted I was reassured by them that the chances of complications were still small and the dr was over reacting.

My GTT was fine, but they couldn't find a dr from my team to decided what to do next as he only made a plan for the test being positive! I changed into my pj's and told them I was very happy to stay until the next day to see the dr.

I went into labour a few hours later, lasted about 3 1/2 hours, loads of water - even after they had broken I could feel gushes woth each push. No complications and ds had no problems comming out despite the dr saying he would be stuck because he was large!

Hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Thanks going - it's reassuring to hear that you can still have a complication-free labour even with PH. Mind you, I still haven't had it confirmed so my worrying may all be for nothing!

FabIsDoingPrettyWell - for what it's worth, I do want to know all the facts. The issue I have with my MW is that she has been generally disinterested in my care up until now and seems to think it is a good idea to tell me all sorts of horror stories and then drag her heels with referrals etc.
Upon hearing that I probably developed SPD a few months ago, she told me that (because I am also suffering with ante-natal depression) "everything seems worse when you are feeling down". I am now on crutches because she failed to refer me to the physio (physio's own words).

I am happy to tel you my experience if you want to know. It wasn't pleasant but my baby did survive.

HooperMummy · 18/03/2010 21:50

Fab - thanks for your offer, it really is appreciated. I have a scan booked for tomorrow afternoon so I think that, as you had a bad experience, it may be worth me waiting for PH to be confirmed.

Otherwise I know I won't get a wink of sleep tonight...

hi, just to say i've been told i have this too. i'm 31weeks and it came back on my 28week scan. i've had the gtt test too and it came back negative. unfortunately i've not heard and had nothing explained to me since so can't enlighten you. but my midwife doesn't seem worried, but thats little comfort to me so don't expect it helps you either! i'm going crazy with worry too and have spent hours on google but guess they'll just keep scanning and measuring. dont know what else to say other then your not alone. sorry.

HooperMummy · 19/03/2010 19:41

FabIsDoingPrettyWell - I had my scan this afternoon and thankfully, I have been given the all clear (goodness only knows why I am measuring big for my dates but I have been assured that I am well within normal limits). I do appreciate your offer to share your experience with me but am really happy that it is not now something I have to worry about!

RaraAvis - thank you for your comment. I'm not at all surprised that you have been left in the dark - I have felt that way all through my pregnancy. I'm sure that you have nothing to worry about but I would definitely get in touch with your midwife/GP and get them to tell you how your PH affects you/the baby and what you need to do when you go into labour etc. (I know it is a way off yet but it should put your mind at ease to know...) I hope that someone gives you the advice that you need - I think a lot of medical professionals forget how worrying it is to be pregnant!!

That is really great news . Just keep a close eye on baby's movements for any change.

RaraAvis · 20/03/2010 13:53

yeah congrats on everything being normal! i'm having another scan at the end of the month (i hope anyway as the midwife recommended it but havn't heard from clinic ) and hope to hear the same! your news has really cheered me up though!

Thanks everyone! I am really relieved as hopefully this means I can go to my local MLU now instead of having to go to hospital...

Thanks for all the advice - it really did calm me down and stop me from turning into a neurotic mess!

RaraAvis - I will keep my fingers crossed for you. One thing I would suggest is to phone your midwife and check that she has actually sent the scan referral as it turns out that, in her hurry to go off on holiday, mine forgot which is why it took so long to get in to see someone.
