Can i even discuss ectopic pregnancy here? Sorry if iv put this in the wrong section, but want to talk about it. I found out i was pregnant, then few days after started bleeding, went to have blood tests at hosp and talked to my doctor to be told i was having a miscarriage. I was told to just go home and id bleed for a bout 5 days or so. Anyway, i thought it was weird they didnt give me a scan or anything to be properly checked out so took it upon myself and just went to EPU, to the have internal scans loads of tests to find out its an ectopic preg, i was rushed down to theatre to have an operation key hole surgery but they didnt even end up removing the pregnancy as they didnt want to risk my body which would mean taking out my falopian tube. Now iv been sent home just waiting basically on my body to reject the ectopic Just wanted to hear from anyone else whos been in the same situation

yep, loads of us on here have had an ectopic.

Lost one fallopian tube but went on to have 3 dc's so all was fine.

You will get lots of support.

Is this your first pregnancy?

Prettyfull · 10/03/2010 08:58

Hi,
Thats great news to hear you have have 3dc since! Congrats. I have one daughter who is 5 years old.

At the momment i feel really scared, im shocked they are letting me just go home after what seemed to be unnessary surgery. They knew frmo my internal scan the 'baby blob' as they call it is tiny and stuck where it shouldnt be. I dont know why they have put me through a big operation, i woke up in recovery feeling so relived thinking it would all be over to be told its still there!

I have to go in on Thurs for bloods to be taken again, but any pain or sever bleedng i get they said i need to go straight in for poss another op!!!!

from other threads I've read, every ectopic is slightly different.

Mine was slight bleeding for several weeks, which the idiot gp didn't pick up (didn't think to do a pg test as I wasn't trying to conceive).

Anyway in the end I had a semi-emergency op, suppose it depends where it's situated.

Poor you, don't hesitate to call the doc again if you feel worried or just want more answers.

Got to go out now - will check back later.

Poor you - it is a shock to find out a pregnancy is ectopic and it does sound like you've been through the mill. However, if they feel your tube can be saved, it's probably better that they left nature to run its course and I guess they couldn't tell that for sure until they had had made a small incision. I had an ectopic pregnancy - the first I knew about it was slight spotting at 11 weeks, then a scan confirmed it and I had surgery that started as keyhole and ended up as a full laparotomy through my previous cs scar, but that's because I was quite far along and there was a rupture while I was being operated on. As mumonthenet says, every ectopic is different and requires different management. I was shocked and sad for a long time afterwards, but I did go on to have ds2 despite my missing tube. I hope you feel better soon - take care and follow the doctors' advice and I'm sure everything will be ok.

Hi,

I had an eptopic miscarriage, which sounds like what you might be having, where they aim not to intervene and keep an eye on you to check that it removes itself and doesn't grow.

The operation could have been a laparoscopy to check what the situation was in terms of where the bleeding is coming from, if the tube was ruptured or close to rupturing they would have removed it.

I hope that it all goes gently from here on in for you. Shout if you need any further advice.

Thanks all for advise, i know its a horrible situation but right now i kinda feel like im the only person going through it so nice to hear pther peoples situations and that u'v gone on to have children.

mrsrvc your right, i signed the consent form for all the diff laparoscopy, laparotomy, salpingectomy, salpingostomy etc but turns out they only put the camera through the belly button and made the 5cm key hole incision, had a look and left it.

How did you cope then? Im scared basically waiting on this severe pain to come from miscarring the ectopic...was it really painful for you and were you taken to hosp?

I understand why they have done it but i just want it all over now. Im dreading having more surgery, my tummys still so sore from mondays op

Prettyfull,

They monitored my HcG to make sure that it was lowering and rescanned me to make sure everything was going. I spent one night in hospital while I was being diagnosed but then didn;t have to go bak in other that as an outpatient.

I think I bled for about 2 weeks, but for some people its quicker than that. It was a bit like having a really bad period for about 2 days then a normal one for a week, and then just spotting on and off. It was uncomfortable, but like I say only like a bad period. If the pain gets worse you should go back in.

Basically they will try to preserve your tubes for as long as it is safe to do so. In all future pregnancies I have to go to be scanned early to check the location of the pregnancy but otherwise it has had no impact on my fertility.

I know that its a horrid thing to go through, and hope that it is as gentle on you as possible.

I had an ectopic pg that partially miscarried and I ended up having to have an injection (methatextrate? or something) to expell the remaining tissue that didn't come away by itself.

Can't remember any details about duration of bleeding or pain so I can only assume neither were too bad or I would remember!

Perhaps this medical management may be discussed with you if nothing happens naturally. The worst part of it all for me (apart from losing our baby, obviously) was the waiting around at the hospital and having to go back and forth for blood tests for a couple of weeks.

Anyway since then (that was 2005) I have had two successful pregnancies and a missed miscarriage. The "good" thing about it all is I am always allowed an early scan at EPAU with the subsequent pregnancies as there is an increased chance of ectopic happening again. Although it never has.

Hope you are ok.

BomDigger · 10/03/2010 21:58

I've had one too.
I had to have the tube & pregnancy removed. I found the symptomatic pain of the ectopic much, much worse than the pain after the op. I was relieved to have the thing out at first TBH.

Your op will be better in the long run, as you have two (hopefully) functioning falopian tubes, so conception should be easier. Even with one tube, eggs can "drift" to the remaining tube IYSWIM.

I have concieved twice in the 3 years since the ectopic too.

I had an ectopic pregnancy a year ago. I'd had two kids with no problems before that so this was a big shock. Was discovered at about 7/8 weeks when I started having 'prune juice' type bleeding and pains. The duty cnsultant was totally insensitive and kept talking about my 'empty womb', never once concerned for my emotional state. Total twat in fact. I was given methotrexate (basically what you get for chemo I understand) and had to keep going back to hospital every week for about 2 months to get blood tests. Had to sit in waiting room with all the happily pregnant ladies to get those done. Not great. NHS really needs to re-think how they deal with ectopic pregnancy care. I want to try again for a baby but my husband has changed his mind re having a third and this is causing big problems between us. Not sure what to do. Hope your situation is improving. Anyone with advice for me would be welcome to reply too. I don't know what to do.
