Mildly upset after first scan

A bit of a silly thing really, but I've just had my first scan, and I've been hoping I'm carrying twins, but it's turned out to be just one.

Twins run in the family, and out of all the generations, my Nanna's great-grandchildren's set hasn't got any yet - I was hoping I'd be the first. (if that makes sense!)

Although we were quietly worried about the financial and the space aspect of having twins, I would have loved the experience of having two.

I really shouldn't grumble, my baby's healthy so far, and even gave me a wave

Ramble over, feeling good it's healthy, I just wondered...!

PS, I already have a healthy DS, 6.10, he's not bothered, as long as it's a boy!

2nd pgs have a habit of being twins, I'm just mildly miffed mine isn't...

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and your healthy baby.

We have twins on both sides of the family so would not have been surprised if we had twins but it was not to be.

Thank you Mme

I had no desire for or history of twins at all, but I can remember looking at the report of my first scan and feeling ridiculously sad because it said "Singleton viable pregnancy" I thought it sounded so lonely!

Hormones, eh?!

Lol, def! DH is a bit worried I'm upset at only carrying one... He's relieved it's one, as we live in a 2 bed, with a small family hatchback - twins would mean a lot of financial outlays!

I think, better luck next time...!

Oh, I know how you feel. I had 6 wk scan last week, and they said it was/ had been twins but they thought one was too small for dates and was failing to thrive and not viable. It was a huge relief that one was Ok (they'd been worried about ectopic) but I would so have loved to have two. I know it's meant to be a riskier pregnancy, and I know two would be financially hard, plus hard work etc, but it still would have been lovely.

You'll adore your baby and can always have more - maybe two close together would feel similar - but I do know where you are coming from!

My cousin had twins and as one went off to sleep the other woke up. They kept this up for about 3 years, and she never got any sleep. I always thought twins would be nice, but listening to my cousin made me realise one is better! It's how humans are designed.

I was terrified of having twins as they run in my family!

I am a childminder so would reduce the number of children I could care for and therefore my income. Plus I already have a stepson and son so would have had to buy a new car.

On the positive side you can give your new baby much more attention than if there had been two and you can always have another one at a later date!

Congratulations!

Oh Music, in some ways I'd feel awful if that happened to me Hope everything goes well with your remaining LO xx

I do agree, Cinnamon, I shouldn't grumble too much, especially as I have 2 dogs, and a DS to think about too, let alone DH. I wouldn't have said I was terrified though - the tiredness would have been the major factor I'd have worried about I think, as Pandora mentioned.

My nanna had twin girls, and one was always the ring-leader, getting into trouble by using her sister... she got her sister to go on all fours so she could climb out of the baby pen...!!!

In each of my pregnancies I always had a sneaky hope that it would be twins (at least that would have explained why I always seemed to put on so much weight so quickly!!) and I was always a wee bit disappointed when it wasn't.

But by the time I was due I was always glad it was only one!! Congratulations!

Thanks Jooly x

I have twins and can't tell you how many people came out with comments such as - 'rather you than me,' 'poor you, i would hate twins', and so on when we announced our news so it's refreshing to see someone who would have loved twins

Congratulations on your pregnancy! There's always next time!

parkj83 · 09/03/2010 16:14

Oh lovely Lou, yeah there's lots of twins in my family, twin aunts, 2 sets of twin cousins, but none after them, so feel like I had to keep things going...!

My friend also has twin girls, and I love seeing them bounce around the playground together as we're waiting for our DS's to come out from their class (they're together, and best friends, so we're comparing notes )

Sigh. Yep, there's always next time.

We've got twins in both my and DH family. Somewhere I read that it's non identical twins that tend to follow in families and only down the female line, sometimes alternating generations. Non identical are genetic becuase it suggests the woman is firing simultaneously on both cylinders (so to speak). Identical twins are a real freak of nature. My mum wished twins on us - but I'm only expecting the one - thank goodness. It would have been nice, but weighing it all up, it's probably better for me that we're only having just the one.
