Lewisham council - King's College Hospital OR University Hospital Lewisham

Hi,

Does anyoneone have experience with these two hospitals? I have the choice of both, but I'm currently booked in with Univeristy Hosptial Lewisham.

Also, what is the average stay at a hospital after giving birth if it's a straighforward delivery with no complications?

Thanks!

there are other threads on this topic on here if you search for them. IMO you are better off being near home coz if you go into labour at say 4.30pm it could take a long time to get from Lewisham to King's.
I've had straightforward births both times, but due to length of time between waters breaking and birth (despite v quick actual labour) with DS and for no discernable reason with DD, stayed 2 nights both times. Hope that helps

mysti77 · 08/03/2010 17:06

Thanks katgod, they are both same distance, Kings takes 1 minute longer to get to than Lewisham.

Don't you have the option of Guys and Tommy's - or you can request to transfer to them I think. They have a really nice birthing suite with a view of the Thames and the Houses of Parliament. :-)

BranflakeGirl · 08/03/2010 20:00

I don't mean to scare you but my 1st niece was born in Lewisham and my SIL had the most awful time, the care she received was appalling and she lost loads of blood, had a massive tear and was left alone a lot of the time even though it was a difficult labour. My brother was so traumatised just from being there he was almost put off them trying for a second. Thankfully DN1 was as healthy as can be, even if she was actually scarred by the forceps right next to her eye.

DN2 was born in Africa...apparently it was a much less traumatic experience all round.

I did some of my training in Kings and wouldn't rate that much either...hygeine wise. It might be worth trying for Guy's or Tommy's as they are sooooooo much better.

Sorry, I seem to be the voice of doom! If it makes you feel any better I get East Surrey...much slated in the Surrey press of late for being crap when it comes to maternity care. Home birth anyone?!

Mumcah · 08/03/2010 20:53

I had my first baby at Lewisham and I'm now pregnant and having my next baby at Kings. The care has been really so far and the hospital is much nicer than Lewisham.

I too am equidistant to both hospitals and although I haven't had my baby yet Kings does seem much better. It also has a lower C section rate.

However, parking is a problem wheras Lewisham is much easier to park at.

There are always going to be bad stories from all hospitals.
Why not have a tour of both labour wards to see what you think?

Lewisham has a new midwife led birth centre opening some time in the spring so would be useful to have a look round that too.

Some hospitals have a 6 hour discharge if you've had a straight forward labour.

flexab23 · 08/03/2010 22:28

I registered with Kings as my friend told me Lewisham was awful. I am 2 weeks and the scans have been brilliant at Kings, they also do an internal scan to check for increased risk of preterm birth and preeclampsia which I don't think is offered every/anywhere else. That said the midwives aren't amazing, very in/out and when I did the tour I was quite shocked at how dismal/medical the labour ward was, it has really put me off.

Lewisham's birthing centre is due to open in April and I'm going to check that out and if happy transfer to them as I really wanted a birthing centre over a hospital. Plus women on my antenatal are with Lewisham or had a baby there before and said positive things about it. The midwife I emailed about the birthing centre was really disappointed I'd heard bad things about Lewisham and I think they are working hard to improve their (hopefully) undeserved reputation. You really should do a tour of both and make up your own mind.

flexab23 · 08/03/2010 22:29

oops 22 weeks I meant!

mysti77 · 09/03/2010 09:14

Thanks for the feedback. It seems what I really need to do from your comments is a tour of the labour wards in the hospitals. I think guys and st thomas may be too far? I'm not sure, I'll look into where it's actually located. It may be closer to where I work (London Bridge area) but perhaps too far from my home.

What happens if I do go into early labour and at work, can I just turn up at my nearest hospital or do I need to make my way to the one I'm booked in for?

How long are thinking of working for before he birth? There are usually signs of going into labour and it does start gradually in most cases so I don't think you need to worry about getting to your hospital.Plus you will want your bag and possibly your carseat.

I would definateley go for Kings or Lewisham rather than St Thomas's...you won't want to be going there in rush hour from where you live!

MudandRoses · 09/03/2010 20:43

Hiya

I had my DS in Lewisham 4 yrs ago; I would say the labour suite was fine - efficient, the midwives were good, they were on the ball about problems as they arose.
however, the aftercare was shite. The midwives or nurses were busy, bored-looking, unsympathetic, and bordering on negligent.
Having said that, that was 4 years ago. Things change.

mysti77 · 10/03/2010 19:01

Thanks Mumcah. I planned on working up till a week and a half before my due date.

Hi mysti77,

I am trying to make the same decision. I live in Brockley and have the choice between all three but I would really like a home or birth centre birth which I can only have with Lewisham. I am going to go with them and if nearer the time it looks like I need a hospital birth I am going to transfer to Kings. I went to a tour of Kings Maternity last night and it looked good but very clinical, they don't have a home to home birth centre so not ideal but they said you can transfer at any time.

Let me know how you get on, be good to find out what you choose, I hope I am making the right decision.

brockleyD · 12/03/2010 21:12

Plus do any of you South London ladies know of a good NCT class near Lewisham? Blackheath maybe?

flexab23 · 12/03/2010 21:15

I think there is a class at greenwich. I'm signed up to the May one in Catford as moving there if my house sale ever blooming goes ahead!
Check their website and they have a list of diff locations.

mysti77 · 30/05/2010 16:28

brockleyD, I've visited the Lewisham birthing centre (It opened about 2, maybe 3 weeks ago). It looks fantastic, you really should check it out

Hi mysti77 you've also posted on my thread re se london mums 2 be so thought i'd return the favour! when we found out we were pregnant i posted this same question, it seems that people say to choose the one nearest your house incase you go into labour in rush hour and need to get there quickly. kings is only an extra 4 minutes in the car as opposed to lewisham and because i have heard not too positive things about lewisham we have chosen to go to kings. so far have been really happy with the care and appointments we have recieved and parking has never been too much of an issue. the car park is often full or very busy but you can also pay and display and put it in the car park when more convenient. but obv lewisham now has this new centre open so maybe go and have a little look? ideally we wanted tommys coz although its not that much further journey time, we have had to go there in rush hour and it took more than twice as long as it should do (1hr 5 rather than 30 mins) its always gonna be a hard choice esp if you're not sure what to expect, but we chose kings coz its a teaching hospital and therefore cant be that bad!

leepod · 31/05/2010 11:54

Mysti77 - I am leaning towards the same decisions as you are... When is your due date?

BrockleyD - which NCT classes did you land up signing up for?

All these questions

mysti77 · 02/06/2010 12:49

scgd, I haven't had a look at Kings yet but it is also not that much more time for me to get there compared to Lewisham. I heard that even if you are booked in at one hospital you can phone up and if they are available they can take you at the other. I don't know how true this is though.

leepod, my due date is 14th July for my first baby (boy). When are you due?

OP posts:
leepod · 04/06/2010 18:03

Hi mysti77 - ah, you are a good while earlier than me. I am due mid-to-late Jan 2011.

I still haven't put my name on the Jan 2011 baby thread as I am waiting to pass the 12 week mark. Just something rather psychological about it...

leepod · 04/06/2010 18:05

Oh, and a good friend of a good friend of mine gave birth at Lewisham a fortnight ago and said to my friend that she had superb care and a great delivery there.

I will ask her for more info when she is more up to accepting visitors (and friends of friends!) and happy to post more info here...

Bandita · 26/09/2010 13:06

Hi. I am 31 weeks pregnant with our first child and was admitted to Lewisham Hospital (labour ward), with bleeding, 3 weeks ago. The problem was identified quickly that day- low lying placenta, touching the cervix. The plan for me, however, was not fully established until day 3 of my hospital stay and it went from ?staying in hospital for 1-3 days? to ?until the baby is born?, which could be any day, if there was a major bleed, via EMCS or via ELCS after 37 weeks.
In terms of the care in Lewisham: The first few days have been the most frustrating as we had to ask to see doctors and waited for hours. Then often a different registrar turned up and we had to explain our situation again (why do I have a book that keeps the records?). Many times they would give different information. E.g. they were not clear about keeping an IV. One of the registrars told us it can come out- which was a huge relief for me as I was thinking I could have it in potentially for 10 weeks- and then the same night, the night registrar said it needed to go back in because ?in the case of an emergency doctors can panic, it would save time and they could resuscitate me easier in the event of an emergency?. Up to that point my mind was really stable (5 days in hospital) ? but then I lost it. There were a few other things that were said which clearly indicated she did not read the plan that was established for me. My partner got quite furious and ended up staying the night and telling the midwives how unhappy we are with the lack of communication and that we wanted to speak to the consultant in charge of my case. The following day we saw her and things were really well explained to us. It was not that we felt the registrar was not medically qualified enough but more her choice of words, which clearly was completely out of line.
Since then I have met most of the consultants (there are 9 in total) and must say, apart from 2, I am very happy with the conversations we had. They do listen and explain things in a calm and informative manner. They go out of their way to make my stay comfortable and they read my notes carefully. It feels like I am part of my plan now and a bit more individual.
Now, obviously my situation is very different from someone who is deciding where to give birth (Lewisham vs. Kings, Birth Centre vs. Labour ward) but maybe I can just give a little insight there too!
Before I was admitted, I had a dream pregnancy: no sickness, no mood swings, glowing hair and skin, all scans tests brilliant. So I was thinking where to have the baby.
At first I was thinking of going to Germany which my GP supported, but that is a different story...
Then I considered Lewisham and Kings. Comments about Lewisham and Kings have been very similar and I came to the conclusion that it depended on:

  1. What sort of birth you were having (pain, duration, etc.)
  2. Who your midwife/ doctor was
  3. How clean the facilities were or what facilities you were expecting

Personally, I found the idea of the new Birthing Centre very interesting and found it comforting to know that the maternity unit and the neonatal unit are just a few floors up. Also I researched some of the consultants and the units and was very happy with what I found.
Having been here now for a few weeks, I can say that I would chose Lewisham again, although I now know how difficult it is to get into the Birth Centre itself.

.....still haven?t mentioned the midwives.....
From day 1 the care I received from the midwives was outstanding. I have to say it can be different from midwife to midwife, but I regard this as ?their own style? and that is fine by me. Sometimes they also can run late or be a bit on edge, but then we all can be. I have to say, I find them very caring and calm. They answer all my questions and provide me with loads of information. Generally they try to assign the same midwives to patients- so they get to know you very quickly. The same happens once patients go into labour- they try and give you ?your own? midwife. I like this a lot as I do not have to explain loads of things all over again. They also listen to me and try and work towards my needs.
The labour ward itself is clean and the equipment seems fine to me. I have always been seen quickly (had to come here once before my admission) and get the impression that the women that come here in labour, are also seen very quickly.
Upshot of all this? Am I looking forward to a birth in Lewisham? Well, maybe I would not go quite that far, but that has got nothing to do with Lewisham but with the birth itself. I certainly have my concerns about some of the registrars -too many of them not being informed enough about patients and their needs, but surely trained enough to work as a doctor- but I also truly believe that it will depend on who you are with on the day. I will write down a few pieces of information and wishes for the birth and will discuss them with the consultant and if I can with the midwife. I think that it is important, no matter where you go, to be firm (maybe even a bit pushy) and say exactly what your (reasonable) wishes are.
This is a lot of information- maybe some of it is helpful?
