Black mould???

Throughout my pregnancy I have been living in an apartment which from time to time gets black mould around the window sills. Although we clean it off, it comes back.

I was reading an article on safe cleaning during pregnancy and it says to stay away from black mould. So I do a bit of googling and now I read it's really dangerous and can cause miscarriage, birth defects and SIDS?? So I am completely stressed out as I am near the end of my pregnancy.

Has anyone else read this? Am i an idiot not to be aware of it? I am completely freaking out!!

Interested in this as just about to go to my old house as our tennant has moved out, and has reported black mould on one of the walls behind a wardrobe she has moved!

30 weeks pregnant so will be passing this job over to DH!

Thanks for the post alert warning banana, I was not aware of this either!

One less mucky job for me!

Oh God, really? We have this on a wall in the living room. I am constantly in there. It is from blocked guttering spilling water on to the wall when it rains. Have been meaning to get it sorted out. Didn't realise it was dangerous. I'm 10 weeks pregnant.

What is dangerous about black mould? DS has black mould on his window frame - always reappears after cleaning.

MumNWLondon · 07/03/2010 19:54

I have never heard of it - its just from condensation/damp around the windows - we had this in my old house as we had metal windows with radiators underneath, where I was pregnant with both DD and DS - I thought it looked horrible so was always wiping them ... need to keep windows as dry as possible and wipe down using mould killer stuff (although would get someone else to do this as the stuff is very toxic).

I too have this. council put in new windows and extractor fans and then it got even worse. Im concerned also. I read that even bleaching doesnt kill it as it comes back and a specialist cleaner is needed to wipe out the main spore it grows from. We have it allover the walls in the bathroom and the ceiling, al windowsills and some of the skirting. Also the kitchen.

I would like to know if anyone has ever eradiccated it completely.

crankytwanky · 07/03/2010 21:05

My last flat, rented from the council had this. They said it was fine.
My bathroom and windows have this now. I thought it was just condensation, although there is a type of toxic black mould.

Would love to know if anyone has had a healthy baby with black mould growing. Morethemerrier I would definitely get it sorted out before you move in. Looks like black mould can be toxic or non-toxic. Hope mine is non-toxic i don't mean to freak people out by the way, there are no conclusive studies on humans, just wish I had known about this earlier.

Well if it was that toxic Hong Kong would be very empty. Life in 90% humidity is a constant battle against mould. Constantly discovering new colonies.

LuckyC · 08/03/2010 15:28

You need to have SHEDLOADS of it like metres sqaured before it poses a danger (I read this during some seropus research I did after freaking out on this topic myself.)

I get DH to clean it regularly as it appears in a bid to stay away from the chemicals I use to clean it.

Seems almost impossible to eradicate with cleaning alone - repainting with anti-mould special stuff and adding extra ventilation seem to be only way to do it, as far as I know?

BellasYummyMummy · 08/03/2010 17:58

My parents have this in their new house and bought a de-humidifier which seems to have helped with the problem.

SmallShips · 08/03/2010 18:44

We have a small amount on our windows in our new build house. I keep the windows open a crack now and it seems to help.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 08/03/2010 19:02

I have had 2 v healthy babies in a home with black mould on the windows.

As for getting rid of it. We regularly wipe it down with bleach solution and airing does help as does making sure the house is not damp (i.e. keep the fire on). The wood burner has helped as makes it a lot drier.

bananapeanutbutter I can honestly say that my niece is very healthy and before and after she was born my brother and sil lived in an apartment with terrible damp and black mould for several months.
