I don't know anything about what you can take but i would ask pharmasist/doctor what you can do.
But thread worms are not gross nor do they make you a scab. My DD's seem to get them every couple of months. I deal with it and treat it. No different to getting headlice IMHO.

posieparkerfuckityfuck · 05/03/2010 18:12

Nothing you can take in pregnancy, just clip nails short, wash bedding daily, wash bottom and bits twice a day(you probably do anyway). The female lays eggs around your anus and leaves an itchy mucus, this is what makes you scratch therefore eggs under nails, back in mouth and on and on. Wear tightish pants to bed, too.

I've had them about three or four times, same time once as three dcs who had worms, two had nits and one had warts and molloscom contageosum...now that's gross.

oobs · 05/03/2010 20:18

my mum used to say that eating raw onions helps...

Goober · 05/03/2010 20:21

Somebody said to me that you should put sellotape over your nought before you go to bed. I was a bit but apparently it helps.

morethemerrier · 05/03/2010 20:24

I have had this three times, once in my last pregnancy and twice in my current pregnancy !

My Doctor prescribed Pripsen, which he checked and was fine to use during pregnancy.

Two sachets, two weeks apart. But if you really dont like the idea of taking anything you can break the cycle with the advice above.

The whole family needs treating, and its actually very common, just not talked about!

I know it feels dirty, but honestly like someone else said just treat it as one of those nit type child annoyances!

I cried the first time I got them! Now I just dish out the 'itchy bum medcine'!

MrsPixie · 05/03/2010 20:25

garlic - copious amounts

OhFuck · 05/03/2010 20:28

I would be astonished if there's nothing you can take in pregnancy. Many anthelmintic drugs are very very safe. As mentioned already, see your doctor or pharmacist.

If you haven't seen it already, this thread might make you smile.

boodleboot · 06/03/2010 07:55

thanks for making me not feel like quite such a circus freak....muchos appreciatos girlies....interesting about the pripsen. will deffo make docs appt to check with him and also make sure to clean bedding everyday

I had this at about 15 weeks- caught from children at school and not dd (perk of the job!) My GP prescribed pripsen but I didn't take it as I'm ultra paranoid in this pregnancy due to two mc's. Managed to get rid of them through hygiene and basically never being without underwear and changing frequently. DD and DH did not get them either so I was lucky I just had to worry about me. I also had a really bad stomach bug which I think may have helped but I don't recommend that. Hope you're free of them soon as you can't take some of the medication if you breastfeed either.

Tortoise · 06/03/2010 22:33

Must have jinxed myself posting on this thread! Tonight DD1 complained of an itchy bum. Had a look and low and behold i spy a worm waving at me! Luckily had enough medicine left to treat her. Need to get more to do the rest of us! Bed stripping tomorrow!

blackcurrants · 06/03/2010 22:54

Do you like pumpkin seeds? They're meant to be toxic to threadworms in your gut, or something (Disclaimer: I read it on the internet, I can't even remember where, so I might be very wrong). If you like them, though, it's easy enough to scoff a small handful and might help.

I'd ask for doc for real drugs, too, of course, but in the meantime maybe it'd help?

boodleboot · 07/03/2010 17:14

ooh i love pumpkin seeds....will try that one for sure. off to docs in morning....

You can take vormex once you are in the 2nd trimester.
A Lancet study in Sri Lanka showed no significant risk of malformation when taken after 12 weeks.
You should get properly treated or you will re-infect the family.
I feel your pain though. They're a bugger.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/03/2010 20:54

awful, wasn't it?

Disenchanted3 · 10/03/2010 10:58

How do you know you have them?

Mumsnut · 10/03/2010 11:03

If you have any Metanium (that yellow, thick nappy rash cream) apply some to your fundament every night (put pants on cos it is horrible for staining). It seems to work for my ds - I think the worms either can't lay their eggs because it's too thick, or don't like the smell .... Anyway, it should help to break the cycle, and also stop the itchiness that the laying of eggs causes.
