Hi everyone, I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with first baby. Tummy showing a bit I think, if only because of bloating/eating more to avoid dreadful sickness.
I am going on a holiday abroad between week 13 and week 16 approx. (booked before the news). Not sure what to do re: clothes. I don't want to find our, half-way through the holiday, that I don't find in my trousers! When is the right time to start buying mat clothes? Or is it best to use something a size or two bigger for a few weeks? Also when buying mat clothes, any tips on what will be more comfortable/best?
I haven't got much money to spend, so was hoping to get essentials from something like George at Asda and a couple of nicer bits from M&S sales and the like. I'd love to hear what worked best for others.

I would take a couple of bigger vest tops in a size bigger that you could put under things if necessary . that way you could undo your button but have your modesty covered!

my fried used to use a hair bobble to keep her jeans button together for a few weeks as well.

it probably won't be much of an issue especially as its your first to be honest maybe just take a few more roomy trousers just in case

What saved me (and still does at 20 weeks) was a Bella Band. It's a stretchy band that you can put over your trousers/jeans/skirts and hold them up once you can't do up the buttons. fairly pricy (at about £25) but I've got plenty of use out of it to make it worthwhile.

im 10 weeks and have been "showing" and unable to do my trousers up for about 3 weeks. my answer for now is longer tops and safety pins on my trousers

ps, i've spotted peacocks do some nice cheap maternity clothes

I second the vests - they cover the gaps as bits start to peak through - first pregnancy and 3 months away from home (12 weeks to 25 weeks), I'm living in long vests and these tunic length, long sleeved t-shirt tops that I found cheap in Dorothy Perkins.

Plus I'd gone and bought new jeans while horribly bloated in the early days, which are still now at 20 weeks very roomy (although though hardly flattering)

There are times when having a boyfriend who doesn't notice what you wear, or when you change your hair is an advantage!

Have a look in george in Asda for tops a size bigger than normal, they seem to have quite a few longer length ones that cover your bump as you grow. Im still wearing mine now & im due in 3 weeks!

I have just bought a couple of tops from the G21 range at Asda that are long and v stretchy. The bump bands are in New Look fairly reasonably.

I've been having a look around (rather prematurely at less than 6wks!) at mat ranges in shops. New Look do a good range and their belly bands are about £15 for 3. Also, If you buy a non-mat maxi dress, that should see you through nicely. Monsoon do some nice bandeau beach dresses, that I reckon would look great and be really comfy, I saw some today and they were around £30.

ASOS is good for cheap mat clothes, but you might get away with normal clothes in larger sizes. H&M have some nice floaty cotton summer tops that you could wear with leggings or jeans.

I'm also doing the bobble with existing jeans/trs thing. It works OK as long as your top is long enough to cover.

My friend lent me bump bands from New Look as she swore by them (she is long in the body). Haven't tried them yet but I think they were pretty cheap.

BertieBotts · 05/03/2010 19:32

H&M maternity clothes are reasonably priced, and nice.

Remember it's coming into warmer weather soon, so some loose floaty dresses might be useful.

You can use a hair bobble or elastic band with your jeans for now - fold it in half and push through the buttonhole, then loop both ends over the button.

You can make a belly band cheaply by buying a few cheap t shirts in plain colours and cutting them in half just under the sleeves - then wear this over your trousers (done up or undone) and under your tops. I haven't done this myself but perhaps others can advise what size would be best.

MummyWilliams · 05/03/2010 19:38

Hi!

I swear by these it means you can continuing using your own clothes. Then like the others have said longer tunic style vests work very well under your own clothes. The belly bands are really really good too!!!

i've been in leggings/tights (rolled down under my bump if not maternity ones) and dresses pretty much non-stop this time. personally i find maternity jeans horrible as they're either restrictive or a weird ugly fit, usually both. or they fit at the start to middle then don't leave room for a full term bump even if your bum still fits!

if you were ever bigger than you are now, maybe you could wear some of those clothes if you still have them? i had a pair of jeans that did me for a while.

another vote for tunic tops/vests! they're great for that stage when you're looking fat rather than pregnant.
