Newbie question: what's the "5+5" thing?

Hi, got a BFP this week (think I'm 5 or 6 weeks) and I decided to head here, the font of mum-knowledge, as I am not particularly maternal and know sf'all about pregnancy, kids etc.

I was very reassured to read about others who have a similar lack of symptoms... i.e., just pmt-like with super sore boobs, tired and moody. Not quite sure what I was expecting to feel though! LOL

Anyway, while trawling the threads, I noticed that some people say they are, for example, "5+5" or "23+4". What does that mean?

(Yes - I will buy a pregnancy book this weekend and do the research but thought someone here could begin my education )

5+5 is 5 weeks and 5 days pg.

23 weeks and 4 days pregnant = 23+4

Congratulations! There is also an acronym list at top of page which might be handy for you. I hear the Mumsnet pregnancy guide is good if you're looking for a fab book!

24+1 means 24 weeks and one day. 5+5 means 5 weeks and 5 days. So you get 5 + 0, 5+1, 5+2, 5+3. 5+4, 5+5 and 5+6, then 6 + 0.... I thought it meant 24 weeks plus one week when I was first pregnant

Some count every last day. I think it matters more at the very beginning, and again at the very end. I especially remember being 40+5 for example though I might have lost track in the middle bit.....

Thanks all!! It seems obvious once you explain it!

Ewe - thanks for the tip on the mumsnet guide.

It's a bit intimidating reading about all the things that can go wrong and all the things you are / aren't supposed to do or know but I'm not big on worrying - I suppose we'll just figure it out as we go along (or ask on here for advice / help ).

We spent so long trying to get pregnant and now that we are, I'm not sure what's next as I hadn't really thought beyond the conception bit. LOL

It's a bit weird I found. You do the test and get all excited, and actually no-one medical is even interested for AGES.

Then there is a brief flurry of activity about 12 weeks, then nothing much happens for ages again.....til about 36 weeks.

I was shocked when I tried to make GP appointment. Oh, you're PG. We'll let the Community mw know..... "What you don't want to double check or anything?"
