Im 29 weeks with number 2.

Just come back from a horrile MW appointment.
Had a GTT last week due to sugar in my sample throughout this pregnancy and family history.

Anyway I mistakenly drank the Wrong flavour Lucozade so of course the test has come back high as 6.8.
Again Sugar in my sample (+3)
and baby is measuring big.

Ive now got to see a consultant next week which im dreading.

My sample also lit up the test strip like a christmas tree, full of Keytones etc so has been sent off a tests.
All my 28 week blood tests have come back high/positive so now need Iron tablets too- Feels like im falling apart!

Anyone able to put my mind at rest as to what happens next if I get told i have GD?
I have visions of another high medicalised birth/induction which is not what i wanted at all

Hi this sounds like exactly what i went through with DC2 i never had it with DC1 .. baby was meassuring big etc.

I had a gtt and it came back positive, and also needed iron. I had to go see consultant who basically went through with a dietician what i can have etc i managed on diet alone. i had regular scans also.

Unfortunetly i had to be induced 2 weeks early as they were concerned about the size, the labour was very closely monitored i wasnt aloud to do much, but my baby did get in a bit of distress. She popped out weighing 8lb 6oz 2 weeks early so i was glad she came out then rather than later

hope that helps :-)

Hi guys,

I am 24 weeks and have my GTT test in a few weeks (DS1 was 10lbs!). However, for the last couple of weeks I have been feeling AWFUL - painfully tired, nauseous, a bit dizzy etc. Had put it down to coping with a toddler and maybe having a reoccurance of morning sickness or picking up a virus, but just wondering - are there any symptoms of having Diabetes that would explain how rotten I am feeling?

Thanks in advance

Frazzles- I too have felt no symptoms. Have a chat with a Midwife if your worried.

Katy- What was the diet like? Was it easy to stick to?

I was induced with DD as she was overdue and i hated it. Like you it was very medicalised, long and painful. Although im unsure how much of that was because she was back to back?
However I was really hoping not to go through that again.

Oh same here my DD was back to back, terrible pain.

The diet was hard i think because i thought i could just eat healthly but obviously no fruit (as natural sugars) and dont eat alot so i always felt hungry.

But now i look back i wasn't really helped to be honest just told what not to eat so i had to figure most of it out myself. Me and Dh are hoping to TTC soon and im dreading it all again but this time i will make sure i get more help with it.

Hi
I was diagnosed with GD with my first child at 28 weeks, I was unable to manage on diet and had to inject insulin, I was big and uncomfortable with this pregnancy and of course was terrified at the thought of being induced. It didn't come to that as I went into spontaneous labour a few days early. I was told that the were happy for me to go to term [ie 40 weeks] but not beyond it. When I did go into labour I was hooked up to drips from the minute I went in and it all felt very restrictive. in the end i had to have an epidural and after a 23 hour labour my ds was delivered via vonteuse weighing in at 8 11 oz, big enough! The first time this happens to you it is all very daunting and confusing, I felt guilty that I had caused it [wonderful dietician explained things very well in a way the consultant and diabetic nurse never could] and traumatised by the thought i could end up with a baby that might go into shock when born. However, the consultants and medical professionals are primarily concerned with the welfare of the baby, they are not generally sympahetic to the Mother's desire to want a natural, vaginal birth [certainly not in my case anyway] so I feel it is best to listen to what they are saying even though it may not be the labour you want, the main thing is that the baby is born healthy and well. I am on my 3rd pregnancy now and once you have had it once they treat you as if you have it from day 1, my second child was a different story however, although I still didn't manage to control it with diet [this was nothing to do with me as I stuck to the diet, but it just how my body copes in pregnancy]and at 30 weeks I went on metformin which is a tablet form of insulin that worked much better for me. Again, although my waters broke a few days early my labour had to be induced as nothing else was happening. Labour was less painful and the delivery was fast [no time for epidural so v painful too]. But there was no time to congratulate myself on gtg baby out without pain relief and the annoyance of catheters etc, cos I went on to have other complications and basically ended up having surgery to remove what they said was 'extra' placenta. My DD weighed in at 6lb 15oz so not exactly in the big category! So you cant really plan these things anyway as nature has its own way of working, all we can do is out ourselves in the hands of the professionals and trust they have the baby and our best interests at heart. God only knows whats in store for me with no 3 but I know now not to expect it to be like the other two! Good luck with it all you will be fine!

Thanks everyone (and sorry to hijack Pigley!)

Funnily enough I was on Metformin to regulate PCOS after my DS - I felt FABULOUS on them and lost enormous amounts of weight...can't wait to get my hands back on them again post DC2!

Hi I had gd diagnosed at 28 weeks and now have gorgeous dd laid on my lap as i type. She is now 6 weeks and i have just had my repeat gtt yesterday and thankfully diabetes has gone now she is here.

No horror stories from me I found the diet quite easy to follow after the first couple of weeks and felt good and healthy, I went on metformin around 32 weeks as levels were getting higher again even though no sugar had passed my lips. The metformin was fine and like another poster said i actually lost weight and dd is now 6 week and i weigh less than i did before pregnancy.

I ahd a planned section at 39 weeks and did not need insulin etc as was on metformin. Afterwards the diabetes was not even mentioned towards me but dd had blood taken every 2 hours as her sugar level was very low, however they were normal by 36 hours after delivery.

DD was only 7lb 3oz small for a diabetic delivery however consultant puts this down to sugars being controlled well with diet and tablet.

Just wanted to give you some good vibes really as i was scared stiff but actually felt quite good throughout preganncy and felt like i was well looked after with extra scans etc x

Hi, I had GD diagnosed at about 28 weeks. I managed to control it with diet alone, had to test blood sugar before/after meals on alternate dates, every 2 weeks had a appt with a consultant, diabetes nurse and a growth scan. DS measured fine at every scan and was born at 40wks weighing 6lb 11oz.

The only meal i struggled to control my sugars with was breakfast, so had to avoid fruit, cereal and bread....never want to see srambled egg again! I just had smaller portions of potato/pasta at tea time and avoided too many sweet treats. I found it quite easy (and i love my food) but i think its because they are checking every 2 weeks what your levels are like and because of the impact it can have on baby i think it made it easier to stick to.

If you do get diagnosed don't worry, its best to be montiored for the remainder of your pregnancy and i felt like i was well cared for.

I was booked in for induction at 39 weeks, i didn't have the best time, they tried for a week to get things going with no success and i ended up having a c section (which actually was a lovely experience). They had told me if i were to labour i would be monitored and may have a drip to stabalise b/s levels which would mean i couldn't have water birth.

The best thing I can advise if you are diagnosed is to try to express colustrum before you are due, i got a pitiful few drops each night and froze it. It came to hospital with us when i had the c section, they will monitor babies bs for a time after birth, at one check DS levels were a bit low so they gave him the 3ml of colustrum i had expressed and it was enough to sort him out.

Like mummytopebs i lost weight and weigh lighter than before pregnancy, i enjoyed the 2 weekly scans and got a real sense of achievement that i had been able to stop DS getting to a whopper size before being born.

good luck and don't panic if you are diagnosed xx
