How do I find out if I've got an anterior placenta?

I'm 20 weeks and skinny and haven't felt any movement yet. People keep reassuring me that I might have an anterior placenta, but if I do, how would i know? No one said anything at the 12 week scan and I'm not due for my next scan for another 2 weeks. I'm also losing weight and I'm so anxious it's driving me crazy

They told me at my 20 week scan. I didn't feel any regular movement til about 23 weeks. Prior to that I'd had a couple of sensations of a flippy tummy and wondered if it was the baby turning, but really it's only in the last couple of weeks (now 25+2) that I've felt what I know to be movement. I can actually see my stomach moving now, and DH can feel the movements too.

I don't know if there are any other symptoms of anterior placenta. I can feel the pulse through my placenta when I hold my hand on my belly. Can you feel that? No idea if you would feel that with a posterior placenta as this is my first pregnancy.

A friend of mine had an anterior placenta too and didn't feel any movement until a similar time to me. If you're worried, take a trip to the midwife and ask her to check the baby's heartbeat with the doppler.

if it helps i am nearly 25 weeks and hardly have any movement due to the anterior placenta. i personally only found out at my 20 wk scan; I asked and it also said so on the report they give you. There was nothing indicated at my 12 weeks. i think you may have to hold out for a few more weeks; sorry!

but please dint worry; 20 weeks is still early days. my midwife told me i wasnt likely to feel much at all throughout pregnancy. So dont worry! But if you are overly concerned, just give your midwife a ring, or pop to your GP and get them to lsiten to the heartbeat

I found out I had an anterior placenta at my 20 week scan - I didn't feel any movement until around that time and even then it was very slight and not everyday. I think it was probably over 25 weeks before I felt definite movement every day and it's only been in the last few weeks (am now 34 weeks) that I have felt proper strong kicks and seen my stomach move.

I didn't get a bump till after 20 weeks either.

Oh, and just to add - the baby was very mobile on the screen at my 20 week scan, but I couldn't feel a thing. The sonographer asked if I could and I was a bit and said no, nothing at all. It was very odd to see baby moving but not feel anything - as if there was no connection between the picture on the screen and what was going on inside. I had my 20 week scan at 20+4.

Yes me too emsyj - the sonographer said "ooh it's very active in there" and I was as I couldn't feel anything. Babay is making up for it now though!!

Baby not babay!

I'm not getting my scan until 21+3 - I've no idea why they're keeping me waiting that long. I'm going to lose my mind before then!

But thank you all so much - this is all really reassuring.

I didn't feel any movement before my scan and I found out then that I had anterior placenta. This is my 3rd pregnancy and first time I have had anterior placenta.

Like the others saw baby in scan moving around and couldn't feel it at all.

I actually bought a doppler (only around £20) because even at 28 weeks still not feeling much at all and keep on stressing about it. Didn't get bump either until around 25 weeks.

Finally now at 33 weeks am feeling some movement but not like my DD or DS.

Hi,

I was told I had an anterior placenta (with a fibroid to boot) at the 20wk scan.

Im now 30 wks and feel my little one moving all the time now! It's really strong, lots of kicks and wriggles. My stomach actually looked like it was doing a mexican wave type thing earlier today! The kicks are all over the place too, from right down near the bottom, to the sides and under my ribs.

However, I dont think the kicks felt strong until about 24wks. Hard to remember now as I can't imagine life without feeling all these movements!

justallovertheplace · 17/04/2010 21:17

I had an anterior placenta both times. I was told at scans. fwiw, with number 2 I just 'knew', I swear I felt the actual implantation
Worth knowing that it might make a back to back presentation more likely- 2 anterior placentas meant 2 OP babies for me

blackcurrants · 18/04/2010 01:03

I didn't feel anything until 24 weeks, if that helps. I heard I had a 'low' placenta but not anterior (is it the same thing? Hah, no clue!) but I think it's more common than we're told not to feel anything till 23-25 weeks, and just as I was starting to worry about not feeling anything .. I felt it!
Hope you have some reassuring squiggles and squirms soon

Even if they didn't say anything to you at your scan it should be written down in your handheld notes somewhere - may be worth a flick through?

1pregheadpumpkin · 24/04/2010 16:06

you know your 12 week scan? have you got the sheet from that in your notes? i didnt realise but it was written on there from 12 weeks, and i only figured this out on wednesday (20 weeks)

lumpybits · 24/04/2010 21:34

I found out at my 20 week scan. I had wondered though because I wasn't feeling much and this is my second baby. I am now 22 weeks and really notice kicks now. With my first I didn't feel kicks until quite late either so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Are you losing weight because you are suffering from ms still?
