Is it worth buying Bio Oil?

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and was going to get some bio oil today in an attempt to keep off any stretch marks. Is it a waste of money?

I decided to get it for half price from ebay, not so miffed if it does nothing then. So far my skins soft and no marks but I'm not prone to marks and I'm only 29 weeks (but huge!). It can't hurt and stops the itching/ dry skin I had so why not.

Don't buy it! There is no evidence that creams actually help prevent stretch marks, it is more linked to genetics. That said, I was the size of a giant hippo and smothered myself in palmers cocoa butter (which was brill for an itchy bump by the way, and v cheap). I didn't get stretchmarks (hurray!) but my mum didn't either.

I used Palmers Cocoa Butter too and didn't get many stretch marks - a couple of very faint silvery lines if you look hard enough (and why would you want to...?!)

I did buy some bio oil but didn't like the smell or the fact that it's runny.

I used cocoa butter first time round and got lots of stretch marks, Ive used bio oil second time round and havnt got as many marks. I got mine from ebay too its half the price!

How soon do you start using it?

HanR12 · 27/02/2010 16:07

I used cocoa butter in the morning and bio oil before bed to cover all bases, I got no marks and I looked massive! I also put it all over my hips, boobs and bum and luckily I only got a few marks on my boobs.
This time I'm trying to do the same an no marks so far, am 26 weeks. I agree that it is more to do with genetics rather than oils but I thought it may help. I started using it about week 10

like notsotinybaba says, there is no evidence that creams/oils will stop stretchmarks. Unfortunately they are hereditary! I use Bio-oil, not to prevent stretch marks (have some horrific ones!), but find it really soothing on my ever-so large bump as the skin gets sooo itchy and this makes it feel soft. Also great for dry skin. It is pricey, i got it on offer otherwise i wouldnt have spent so much. And i dont like how its so greasy but I do like how soft my skin feels after.

Apparently stretchmarks occur in the fourth layer of skin and any cream/oil doesn't go past the first layer so make no difference at all

i tried bio oil and palmers tummy butter.
neither worked for me with ds1.
seem to be having little effect this time either, as i have new, quite deep and wide stretch marks.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 27/02/2010 19:31

Worth a shot I'd say. I used palmers for ages first time, stopped then suddenly millions popped up but it probably would have happened anyway. Bio oil I do find quite good though for my scars - I have some quite bad ones and it really has toned them down.

only buy it if you are going to use it twice a day otherwise it wont work ...cocoa butter just as good and cheaper and smells nicer but u have to apply more often xx but up to you hun xx

themothershipcalling · 27/02/2010 19:53

I used both everyday and had no stretchmarks till right at the very end, poss made no difference and I wouldn't have got any anyway but I think did help with afterwards IYSWIM

i use sweet almond oil from holland and barratt - it is cheaper than bio oil and less greasy/easier to absorb. maybe it is genetics but i never had stretchmarks with 2 previous pregnancies. i used it morning and night and also olive oil in the shower. it does help relieve itching and the stretchy feeling.
