Dear all

My consultant is going on holiday (!) but apparently he is the best man for the job - despite a somewhat patronising manner.

Any thoughts on whether I should I hold out for a later date? I have been told I'm high-risk if my body goes through labour (previous surgery means I have a big scar on my uterus which could rupture)

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all so much for your advice and support.

As many of you have said, an early birth means there is catching up to do with weight gain, but there is no reason to think development will be hindered.

An update following yesterday's consultation. Firstly, he was nicer than last time, and I feel a relationship could be important in the operating theatre

His view was that there is less than 1 per cent risk of breathing difficulties at 37 weeks, and that the vast majority of such problems are virtually insignificant. Time in care would usually involve the gentle addition of oxygen and even that is very rare.

He also said the choice was mine - that he is happy for me to hold out for another date and was very helpful in this regard - booking me in but making a note that my condition would be explained to whoever was on duty on an alternative day.

I then snooped about, and the lead midwife rates this guy highly. splatt put it most clearly when she said that his mention of a holiday was blurring my thinking. The midwife did say that he was known for his "unique" sense of humour! but that he's really very good.

So now I have to weigh up the alternative dates (further apart than desired because of the holiday, and the Easter weekend), but an advantage of the earlier date is another week with my DP not working, as it's earlier in the Easter holidays (we teach). And as my family really cannot be relied on for anything but making demands, this could be a massive bonus, especially after the c-section.

If you've made it this far, thank you for your attention.

Your comments, as ever, are welcome

ItchyTits,
I am scheduled for a section at 38+1 which some people say is too early, but some hospitals do them as routine between 37 & 38 weeks. There are additional risks about early section dates and breathing which is why in some instances the administer steroids (they will be doing so in my case). However different babies react differently.

I do take note of the fact that people say you can go in for an emergency section if labour starts but there are additional problems with that, in that some labours really do go pretty quickly, and labour wards are often very busy, so you could end up labouring for what for you could be a dangerously long time.

Try to consider what is best for you. There are a lot of anti c section views about, but what is important to remember is that you need to have the option that is the lowest risk for you and your little one.
Good luck, I am sure that you will make the right decision for your family.

Glad your meeting went well.

With regards to the breathing issues - DS2 has no lasting problems (he was 37 weeks) but that first week with him in NICU wasn't much fun. However the staff were brilliant and I managed to establish bf despite all feeds for the first 5 days being expressed.

Sorry - I don't want to put a downer on things and think you've got a special set of circumstances which means you need to weigh up all your risks and go for what you feel best. Sounds to me that your consultant feels the least risky option for both you and baby is to have c-section when he can do it.

Good luck!

ps - can't he re-arrange his holiday
