do babies play tricks?

I've been feeling a bit under the weather for the past few days. I've been having a lot of stomach pain and loads of braxton hicks and I'm only 31weeks.
Then yesterday the baby's movements were significantly reduced and I tried everything to get him moving. He's usually like an octopus!
So this morning as he was still quiet, I rang the MW who were lovely and I spent a couple of hours in the maternity department.
As soon as I was hooked up to the trace the baby went mental. The printout says 56 movements per hour!!!

Feel like he was playing with me. Anyone else had the same?

MW were very understanding and friendly too!

Yes. Going in for reduced movements is usually a guaranteed way to see the most active baby ever!!

You did the right thing, getting our worries checked out!

Babies do have some quiet time, dd2 was really active for almost 48 after I had a glucose test (routine here) then had a very quiet day after that.

But yes, if concerned always get checked. I am of the theory that you cannot waste anyone's time when a baby is involved!

Dd did that to me too...was very embarrassed! glad all is well for you

Mine can be doing an alien impression. Absolutely wriggling/kicking up a storm and the very second someone else puts a hand on my tummy to feel him. He goes completely still, it is like the cheeky little monkey knows and refuses to perform, I can almost imagine him grinning away in there.

Same here Morloth, dp has felt one movement in this whole pregnancy so far (29 weeks) because as soon as his hand comes anywhere near my belly she stops pummelling me and freezes. It's SO annoying!

DaisymooSteiner · 25/02/2010 10:19

I think there's a theory (don't know whether it's been proved) that babies can actually sense/hear the ultrasound waves from the heart monitoring machines and it can wake them up and make them more active. I know some sonographers report that babies sometimes move away from the scanner when it's placed on the mum's tummy!

Morloth · 25/02/2010 10:29

This one kicks them (the machine not the sonographers), doppler as well. He shifts and whacks it.

Oh this is good to read.

My LO does the stopping moving when Daddy wants to feel trick and does the kicking doppler trick and moving so much they can't take her pulse. DH says she's being like her mother - contrary at times and an exhibitionist at others.

It is odd though when she goes quiet for a while. Presumably she's just turned inwards so I can't feel as easily or just she's having a quiet day.
