Reuseable nappies

Hi,

I'm currently researching which reuseable nappies to use when my baby arrives in 3 months time.

I've looked at www.littlelambs.co.uk and they have bamboo, cotton and microfibre ones. This is my first child and I haven't a clue.

Has anyone been down this road and could give me some advice please?

Thanks

I used bamboo squares, I loved them, there are different folds and the funny three armed hold it together things were fab. I found folding the nappy lovely and theraputic, and there are different folds to suit boy/girl older/younger. Coupled with a strip of fleece as a liner and a jazzy PUL wrap he always looked ace and never ever had nappy rash. (mock pony skin wrap was my favourite).

I really miss those days! (plus the 10 or so I kept make ace kitchen/cleaning cloths)

I think bamboo is good as it is very absorbent, dries quickly and has natural anti-microbial properties, there is a section on here for cloth nappy users somewhere but I've never found it as I would be too jealous of the people who still got to have fun with them.

Aah "lostinwales" that is so sweet - thanks for that

I've been told the cotton ones take a while to dry and the microfibre ones dry very quickly, but I had not found out much about the bamboo ones.

Ask thenappylady.co.uk - there is a good questionnaire on the site and the advice is completely free.

I'm using Pop-ins - they're made of bamboo. Very impressed with them! Take a little while to dry, but very practical things.

Hiya,

I went to The Baby Show at Excel yesterday and seemed to spend a lot of time talking about reusable nappies much to DH delight.

Everyone seemed to recommend bamboo over cotton and microfibre due to antibac properties and it also retains it softness after washing more than cotton. They didn't seem to like microfibre but said it dried the quickest.

I was really impressed with the principle and think we will try them too.

Was quite impressed with "look at the cotton nappy company thecottonnappycompany.co.uk" who stock lots of brands and claim to be independent and will recommend best brand to suit you. Tot Bots and Fuzzi Bunz seemed good to me.

Good luck

i went down the cloth nappy route and ended up going a bit mad!! And spending a lot more money then i ever intended!! Am hoping to get some use out of them again, but dont go as mad as me and buy millions!
I used pre-folds with a wrap, and also all-in-one pockets with a bamboo/microfleece insert that you stuff in the pocket that i had custom made from weenotions.co.uk- beautiful nappies but like i say not really needed and extravagant.

thenappylady is very useful and there are loads of forums with cloth nappy users.

Don't buy loads on one type of nappy, buy a few different ones and see how you get on.

Have a look at pocket nappies and all-in-ones, consider birth-to-potty nappies.

Come over here. The general chat thread in particular is full of nappyholics.

Have a look at websites like Kittykins and Twinkle Twinkle. Good selection of nappies and good advice too.

Consider buying second hand - keep an eye on Cloth Nappy Tree and the For Sale board here on MN. Newborn nappies in particular tend to be good value second hand. I got my lovely XS Sandy's preloved and nearly new for something like £2.50 each and sold them on for the same price.

nutritionmum try your local council and see if they have any info about nappies. Our local one has 2 services: you can buy a trial size set of nappies and wraps of different types for £10 or for another £10 you can hire a set for 3 weeks with a variety of different nappies to try before buying a set of your own...
I have already bought a set of prefold squares and wraps (having sold my last lot) but am going to get the trial pack to research different styles for larger sizes... worth asking:?

ooh i dont know if this has been mentioned, but your council might offer you money towards buying cloth nappies, worth having a look at the website.

Two parter nappies are very good for the first six months when the poo is runny, these can be shaped or prefolds with a wrap on the outside. pockets are easy too. I used motherease sandys(shaped two parters) and bum genius (pocket). If you use cloth nappies, you could also use cloth wipes too - you can buy these or just use cheap flannels/cut up towels, they are more substantial than the wet wipes when cleaning up! I use mine by just wetting them and squirting a bit of boots foaming baby wash on them.
