Hi all, I am almost 39 weeks and my bump is soooo itchy, I have some quite bad stretch marks even though I used cream every day, but now I cant even put the cream on because it stings!! I am trying really hard not to itch as I have made myself bleed where the skin is cracking, but no creams I have tried have made it any better...

I asked my midwife at my 38 week appointment on monday, and she said it was just stretching, but it is sooooooo annoying it even stops me sleeping! Has anyone else had this?
xx

You need to get tested for obstetric cholestasis, which is a liver condition. Most likely the itching is innocent, and it's very common in late pregnancy, but it's important to rule out anything else.

Calamine lotion, cool showers or baths, oil, sleeping with a fan in the room...the home run is grim, I'm afraid

Hope you find something that helps.

yes sophiejoandbump i have and i also had it immediately afterwards, everywhere, and would wake up finding myself scratching myself silly.
go to the GP (cos it's free and E45 itchy cream is expensive) and get a prescription for Aqueous Cream, use it as soap as well, and slather yourself in it. My GP also gave me a similar sized tub of Aqueous with 5% menthol added to it (think it was 5% but could have been 1%) which instantly cooled the skin too.
It's never too late to ask, you could still be pg for another couple of weeks (sorry!) and if you're like me it could last into Life Beyond Pg too .
And ALSO Aqueous is great for baby baths, baby sensitive skin, gets rid of cradle cap etc etc. I'm still using mine well into my 2nd pg.

Thanks ladies, have heard about the liver condition, thats y I bought it up at MW appointment, but she said it was just stretching, now I am worried because I am sure it is more than that :/ but I am just not sure

I think itching on the soles of your feet or the palms of your hands is the main symptom, but ime I've been tested when I've just had itching on my tummy.

Try babyoil in the bath or lather it on in the shower, it's stopped me fromraking my belly back and legs to bits. E45 is fantastic aswell -you can top up during the day, I found after DS1 that my skin got drier after I'd had him but mine wasn't as bad as yours sounds..... Neither should sting....

hettie · 19/02/2010 20:07

oh god are you me? 38 weeks and streched to hell..... Horrible horrible continous madening itching (plus red rash) I too consulted midwife re the liver thing, but apparently hands and feet are teh main symptoms. My dh has eczema and got me to do the following (in the middle of the night when I was in tears with it ) Get a muslin/cloth and some icy cold water- wring it out in water and place on bump, repeat (lots!) so it takes the heat/itch out of it, then slather on E45. It did provide tempory relief, at least enough to get to sleep.

sophiejoandbump · 19/02/2010 21:48

thats exactly what I have hettie...realllyyyy itchy. thanks for the advice ladies xxx

Do get it checked as I had OC but my hands and feet never itched. Was mostly my tummy and occassionally my thighs

Ledodgy · 20/02/2010 21:39

Do get it checked but it sound sless like OC and more like PUPPP which is what I had with ym first pregnancy. All I can say is try not to scratch as it spreads. You have my sympathy as it is horrible I ended up taking Zirteck antihystamine on the drs advice as it was so unbearable.

ingusha · 21/02/2010 05:16

I have this from 30 weeks - terrible. Got checked- OK, hormonal changes in a skin apparently. The only things that helped porridge in a sock (3tb spoons) in a bath water help to soften the water and provide a relief. I also use it as a soap to avoid drying the skin and oat and chamomile lotion for irritable skin from Neal's yard.

I have just been told I have OC :-( its awful, you'd know if you had that. Your hands and feet itch so much, I can't sleep or anything. Tables are helping a little but its so uncomfortable
