How soon for results of 12 week scan?

Had my bloods taken at 8 week booking in appointment and have 12 week scan due in a couple of weeks, I'm at Queen Charlottes.

Just wondering how soon we will get the results? I assume they will be able to give us a certain amount of information at the scan, but what about the blood results. Is it the same day?

Havn't yet told our parents as its both their first GC and will be insanely excited. Afraid to tell them yet in case anything is wrong....

The scan they will tell you about as they are doing it and the bloods should be back by then too. Congratulations!

BRT were the bloods taken at 8 weeks just for your booking in - ie to test Rubella/Chlamydia/HIV/Blood group etc rather than being any kind of triple/quadruple test in conjunction with a nuchal scan?

If so then I got my blood test results completely separately from the scan - blood results came from the MW not from the hospital (where my scan was done) and were given to me at my 16 week appointment with the MW (I had rather assumed that if anything was wrong they would have taken steps to contact me prior to that). I did not have the triple/quadruple test (did have nuchal scan) so cannot comment on blood tests for that personally but it seems to be that most people get those results shortly after the scan.

We've found out our ante-natal club thread (Aug) that there are hugely differing practices at different NHS Trusts though so the above is only IME.

I had bloods at my 8 week appointment. Was HIV/rubella/blood type etc. They didn't 'tell' me the results as such, just stuck the results letter in with my notes at my 16wk appointment. I assume they'd have contacted me if there was anything in there to tell me.

12wk scan they just say what's happening as they do it.

We don't have nuchal whatsits here. The triple test I got a letter with the results about a fortnight later.

thanks for your replies. hmm, all a bit different then.

I'm having a Combined Screening Test which they say is 'an NT scan in combination with a blood test to give the result'. So by that rational they will give me the % risk of Downs on the day.....I hope, or at least by letter soon after

I'm not worried about the results for group, HIV, rubella etc as I know all the results of those from previous tests

BRT I had a nuchal fold and bloods taken on tuesday - they gave us an indication from the scan that all looked ok (ie presence of nasal bone and measurement of nuchal fold). We got the full results back yesterday from the bloods combined with age, combined with scan.

That was private though, don't get testing from our NHS trusts.

BigRedTomato, apologies if you know this already -

There are 3 main factors they use to calculate risk in the combined screening test - age based risk, risk based on the scan, and risk based on blood results.

if you have the blood test done (blood taken) the same day as the scan, you will have to wait to get results back from the blood test. This is the norm for every NHS test I have heard of. This means you will have a short wait to get your full results. Your midwife should be able to tell you how long this wait normally is - or they should be able to tell you at the scan.

(I made an appt to go in the week before my scan to have my blood test, so that I could get the total risk/result the same day as the scan - I was pretty anxious. Like Cosmosis though, mine was private as the NHS in my area doesn't provide any nuchal scan/Combined Test at all. )

Hi BigRedTom
Just to echo barkfox and others really.

Interesting how the service varies in different parts of the country though. With my first 2 pregnancies I went up to Kings in South London, had bloods and scan done on the same day - and you got the results straight away. I live in Brighton, and we were sent up there as a matter of course.

This time my midwife told me at booking in that it was now done locally and you got the results in the post later on. I was pretty shocked by this as thought it was pretty poor (not realising that actually this is fairly common practice ). As a result I am planning to go private for the first time ever and go to the FMC in London largely because you get the results immediately just as you do at Kings. I'm 41 so my results are quite stressy, also I had a MMC with my last pregnancy (discovered at my scan) so all the emotions are extra heightened.

Phone your unit - they MAY be able to do your bloods a day or 2 earlier (guess they need to be fairly close to the scan so that levels are relevant), so you can get ALL the results together. BUT as has been said MOST of the result will come from the scan itself anyway. Good luck.
