i need some advice. My DD will be 21 months when this DC arrives. I have convinced myself i dont need a double buggy as i will carry baby in the sling. But after yet another episode of DD not wanting to walk, then kicking up quite a tantrum getting in the buggy i dont know if thats the best idea. Im not sure if i can see myself coping If i have baby in a sling, and picking DD up who is kicking and screaming then fighting with her to get in the buggy. My only alternative is to drag her along the floor!!!!

meant to say my question was actually about getting a double buggy- my friend has offered me her new side by side buggy for £40 though not suitable for under 6 months, so i would still be stuck for the next 6 months, and by the time that happens DD will probably be old enough not to create as much a fuss.

get a double

you may not always want the baby in a sling (esp if get sore back/baby heavy/have cs)

or try a buggy board

we had and used all three - different options for different outings, but I don't drive so it was worth the investment for us

(and a phil'n'teds can easily carry 3 or even 4 children in a muddy festival situation.....extra bonus value)

I have the same issue as you although my ds will be a bit older than your dd. I wanted to use a buggy and sling but ds has started playing up recently so I have (this morning) found a double buggy from birth on the tesco website for just less than £38, bargain, and if i don't get much use out of it I haven't wasted much money.

NoahAndTheWhale · 18/02/2010 12:38

I have a 22month gap and found my double buggy invaluable. It was the difference between getting out and not getting out.

My DC are 6 and 4 now and although I was worried at first, this age gap is really good .

PanicMode · 18/02/2010 12:39

I had this - except my DS was only 15 months when DD arrived so I had to have a double buggy, but I am about to have number 4 and DS2 is 22 months, and I have got a double - you will not always want to have the baby in a sling, and there are times when it's useful to contain your toddler!

Clary · 18/02/2010 12:40

I had 22mo gap with DD and DS2 and never had a double.

Did the sling thing and then a buggy board for DD until she was about 2.5.

Disclaimer: I hate doubles (see threads passim) but at least it is possible not to have one.

missmapp · 18/02/2010 12:44

I had a 2.6yr gap and had a cheap double for about the first 6 mths. DS1 is quite short, so didnt like the buggy board as he couldnt see over the top of the buggy! I used the sling quite alot but there were times when ds2 was asleep and I wanted to focus on ds1 when out and about, that we used the double buggy. I hated the double tho' and ds1 soon learnt to walk everywhere

pigleychez · 18/02/2010 13:49

Same here... DD will be 21mths in May when DC2 is due.

I hope to do with a buggy board for DD and the times when I think she will kick off/get tired then Baby in the sling and her in the buggy.

I too have days were I wonder if a double would be easier but DD is such a good walker that i really dont think she would be in it very long and the shops here are just about big enough for a large single.. let alone a double. Plus the doubles I like are all over £500!

DD is a pretty good walker so fingers crossed but if not then Ill get a cheaper double for longer trips out. Think its just a case of see how it goes.

I'm pondering it too. Will have 19 month gap if bean arrives as planned in June.

If I get one it'll be a nipper 360 side by side. I've looked into quite a few and that one gets the best reviews as light and easy to push.

I love the 3 wheeled britax we have at the moment so I am loathe to buy a new one if I can help it!

BellasYummyMummy · 18/02/2010 14:14

those of you that have double buggies which ones do you have?

queenmercury- which tesco one did you find for £38?! been having a quick look and that seems an unheard of price.

I have a 20 month gap (youngest now just turned 1). Inlaws very kindly bought us a very expensive 'Phil & Teds Vibe' and I reckon I've used it less than 20 times in 12 months. I still carry dd in the sling and use the trust Techno XT the vast majority of the time, on other occasions I put dd in the buggy and DS on the buggy board. If you do go for a double, don't spend lots!
Oh, and you soon get used to picking a screaming wriggling toddler up with a baby in the sling

weegiemum · 18/02/2010 14:18

I had exactly 2 years between dc1 and 2, then 22 months between dc2 adn 3.

got by no bother with a single and a sling/backpack.

Doubles are a lot of bother, especially if you use buses etc. I was luckily still able to carry dc1 at age 2, so could alternate them between buggy and backpack depending on the need.

naughtyameliajayne · 18/02/2010 19:03

have you considered a buggy pod? i ended up getting one to go on side of my double buggy (yes i look like a nutter!!!) ds 1 and 2 were just (by days) 3 and 2 when ds3 arrived - i needed to have option to 'contain' them all when out and about, and even tho DS1 was 3 he still got tired walking for long. its basically a little seat that attaches to side of buggy and it can be folded up when not in use. ive found mine invaluable.

naughtyameliajayne · 18/02/2010 19:04

ps - it was about £90

del1 · 18/02/2010 19:36

There will be 19 mnths difference between mine, so think I will need a double, as I know my back won't take a sling at the moment (disk problems!)
can someone tell me what a buggy board is? Never heard of one.

QueenMercury · 19/02/2010 19:04

direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-7220.aspx

hope this link works i'm useless at links

CrazyKat · 19/02/2010 19:15

del1, a buggy board is a little step that attaches to the back of a single buggy for dc to stand on when they don't want to walk.

TulipsInTheRain · 19/02/2010 19:19

18 months between my older two and i never had a buggy.

I chose not to buy one while preg and said if i needed one i'd buy it later on but i just never felt the urge.

ds1 got oo heavy for the sling by 5 months as he was huge but dd is a trooper of a walker (and she only started walking at 14/15 months so that certainly wasn't anticipated whilst i was preg!)

LittleMissNorty · 19/02/2010 19:24

20 months between mine and I needed a double buggy. My DD is much better behaved and easier to control strapped into a buggy. Even now at 2.5 she sits in it when I am shopping with the 2 of them on my own. The thought of her just buggering off / not doing as she's told

When I have a second adult with me, I only take the single buggy out and she walks.

del1 · 20/02/2010 16:25

Queen Mercury, and CrazyKat thanks for that!
I still have four months left to decide what to do!? x
