Upper back pain, 20 weeks (new to mumsnet)

Hi, I'm 35 and 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Had my second scan this week and the baby is perfectly healthy.

I, however, am suffering from excruciating pain in my upper back (between the bottom of my right shoulderblade and my spine), and also underneath my right breast, approximately where my diaphragm is.

It's usually OK for a few hours after getting up, but by about half way through my working day it is unbearably uncomfortable, and only alleviated by lying flat on my back. Obviously, this is not usually an option, as I either have to be sitting at my desk typing, or standing up and lecturing. Travelling home on the train after work is sheer agony.

Might be worth mentioning also that I'm shortwaisted, and my bump and breasts are already enormous.

I'm getting desperate now. Does anyone know a) what the problem might be and b) what I can do to alleviate the pain, especially at work? I have my own office, but I can't lie on the floor all day!

It's not acid reflux is it? It's just that the pain you describe, esp under your right breast, is very similar to what I get - and I can only alleviate it by turning over on my side (I get it at night in bed)frantically until it sort of goes away.

I'm not sure what the upper back pain is though. I'm the same as you, very short waisted with a big bump/boobs, but my worst pain is my lower back, into my bottom. So bad, that I have to do everything sitting down (I'm 28 weeks)

The MW should refer you to the physio - I have a belt thing which helps a bit (but so uncomfortable to wear).

Anyway, just wanted to post to give you some sympathy xx

I'd agree, ask the mw to refer you to physio, but if it is anything like in my trust the wait is about 4-5 weeks so you may just want to make appt with a physio/chiropractor/osteopath and pay for it. Or, it could be trapped wind? That hurts like bloody hell sometimes, sound ridiculous but true!
