Are your other halves taking 1 or 2 weeks off?

DH has been offered another job, which he is very keen on, so it would mean sacrificing statutory pay.

We are deciding between 1 and 2 weeks off. 1 week off just doesn't feel enough (we have a toddler too, who I know will be disturbed sleep wise and need resettling from being woken).

I just wondered what others do ...

Mine is taking 2 weeks. I think the first is paid, and the 2nd unpaid. I agree, a week doesn't seem like a long time. It also occurred to me yesterday that if I have a long labour, that will eat into his time off as well, although he does have holidays that he could take if he needs to.

DH took two days.

He had just been on 6 months gardening leave and DD was born on the day he was due back

mazzystartled · 16/02/2010 17:05

DH gets 2 days full pay from his employer, whoop whoop.

So he's taking 1 week pat leave and 7 days paid holiday. There is a bank holiday in there around the time it's likely to happen, so he'll have 3 weeks total.

This is baby no 3 (the others are 5 and 3), and v likely to be a c/s so I think 3 weeks is realistic for us.

Rhian82 · 16/02/2010 17:10

DH took two weeks off, but he was in a job, so no worries about pay (and his company did full-pay paternity leave).

If you can afford it, I'd definitely do two, especially if you have a toddler as well.

pigleychez · 16/02/2010 17:13

With DD, DH took 2 weeks. One staturory and one holiday. It flew by as I spent about 4 days in the hospital after DD was born as she was abit poorly.

This time with DC2 and DD only 18mths old. DH has said he will take 3 weeks off. Hes since changed changed jobs and I think I remember him saying he gets one week on full pay which would be fab! The other 2 I think are holiday weeks.
We dont plan to go away this year so perfect time to use them really.

thanks all for posting.

bit annoying as his current job is full pay for 1st week, but hey ho. i agree, i think we'd benefit from 2 weeks, especially as he'll be settling into a new job, so will want to make a good impression.

thanks for posting.

DH took 2 weeks pat leave which was only paid at statutory rate (he works for meanies ), we knew that was all he would get so saved up to cover the shortfall over the course of the pg. I would say 2 wks is the minimum amount of time you need if you can afford it, hth.

littleoldme · 16/02/2010 19:12

Dh had two weeks. I was labour for three days then is hosp for another three so it only felt like one week. take as long as you can afford

Skimty · 16/02/2010 19:25

Would it be easier to split it?

You may be on such a high for the first few weeks and then crash at about week 5 etc when it may be good to have an extra pair of hands. That way you spread the unpaid amount.

stressheaderic · 16/02/2010 19:50

To my utter delight, DP tells me he gets 2 weeks full pay :0)
I wasn't expecting this at all (and nor was he). He also gets 2 weeks unpaid leave if he wants it, which he is taking a month later when we are back on our feet a little and can go out for little walks and stuff. Luckily, he has saved up to account for this.

Massive telecoms company...the job's a bit crap, but they do look after their employees very well it seems, lots of flexibility for parents.

nickytwotimes · 16/02/2010 19:53

We have a 3 yr old.

Dh gest one week full pay, one week statutory and is taking them. We are saving to make up the deficit.

Have you any other family who could help?

LaTristesse · 17/02/2010 09:03

Mine is taking 2 weeks, but using is holiday allowance as the pat pay is a bit rubbish... Not like we'll be actually having a holiday anyway this year!

IZDI · 17/02/2010 16:42

two. we've got a 6 year old so the school run will be down to him which helps, a lot.

ande · 17/02/2010 19:31

He gets two weeks full pay. Employer also allowed him to roll over 1 weeks leave from the year before. Oh and they give an extra day for the actual birth which isn't included in the two weeks paternal leave.

heather1980 · 17/02/2010 20:08

2 weeks, when i had ds he was having 2 weeks pat and 1 week holiday but he did my head in and i felt that i couldn't get in a routine, i had 2 year old dd as well, so i sent him back to work and he took the week holiday when ds was 2 months old.
this time he's only taking 2 weeks

Pinner35 · 17/02/2010 20:23

When DD was born, DH was home for a month which was fab. This time around he's working for a different company and get 2 weeks paternity leave with full pay in addition to 6 weeks holiday...yay!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 17/02/2010 20:27

6 weeks for my DH! Well basically it was probably 2 weeks of holiday and the rest working from home, but the holiday was spread out. We knew that I was having a c/s and the school run was a huge issue (a good drive away), so for the last couple of weeks, he went into town for meetings when he needed to, but made sure they were between school hours so he could do te driving etc.

Just reading this, think he has been an absolute diamond actually. Perhaps its about time I reintroduced sexual activity - 7 weeks post natal now!

ReneRusso · 18/02/2010 00:00

DH told me he gets 1 week and I have just found out that he can have 2 weeks. I think he was fibbing because he doesn't want to have more time off so I'm pretty angry. I am having a csection, so will need all the help I can get.

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 18/02/2010 00:47

DH had 2 weeks off with all 3 of ours. I was in hospital for 14 days with DC1 and he started leave when I got out. DC2, I was in for 7 days and again he started when I got out and we had the support of parents for my eldest. DC3, I was in for 9 days and he again started when I came out and the parents helped with the other 2 DC. I was lucky as I had a lot of support and DH got 2 weeks on full pay.
