Hi ladies,

I'm a newbie here, now into my 8th week with my first baby and into the 4th week of full on nausea. I'm lucky in a sense that most of the time I can keep food (little and often) and fluids down, but the nausea is overwhelming. Normally I'm physically sick 3 or 4 times a week and I have over active salivary glands, meaning I need to spit once or twice every 5 minutes-which means getting up to go to the bathroom sink all the time.

I've resisted going to the doctor until today (appointment at 4pm) as I'm not happy about the possibility of taking drugs to help with the nausea. However, I am absolutely miserable. I'm self employed, run a business from home and need to be in London several times a week but for the last month I've barely even left the house. I feel as though this may be my last resort as I have literally tried everything.

Has anyone else taken any anti-nausea drugs (prescription of course) did they help and how was the baby?

Please help.

x

The cyclizine I'm taking works pretty much straight away - well, within an hour anyway. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that it made everything 100% perfect because it didn't - but it did/has taken away the worst of it.

VelvetQuilt · 16/02/2010 16:42

Hmmmm....well I'm not seeing any difference at all at the moment. I may as well not bother with these. Just can't get rid of that horrid taste in my mouth and all that saliva! Back to the doctors tomorrow then!

There really is no need to be rude. I wasn't being patronising and not everyone knows about the properties of ginger in dealing with nausea. That's a bit like saying that everyone knows about trying the travel sickness bands...I didn't know about them until I was asking for an alternative cure for my 6 month bout of nausea ~ so I tried them; waste of money for me, but new knowledge welcomed none the less. I've told many rl friends about ginger for pg nausea who have been astounded by the information.
It was a suggestion. Just a suggestion. Excuse me for trying to be helpful.

Aubergines · 16/02/2010 17:03

Prochlorperazine is stematil. Made no difference to me. Cyclazine helped but made me feel floaty and out of it. In the end I gave up on drugs as I hated the dizzy/ out of it feeling almost as much as the nausea and my GP made me soooo worried about the side effects that I could never relax.

I had the over active spit production too. I actually found it helped if I constantly sipped water. That and plain doughnuts got me through (& probably explained my five stone weight gain...).

I feel so sorry for you but it will pass. With DD1 I felt better at 17 weeks. With DD2 it was worse but finished by 15 weeks.

skihorse · 16/02/2010 17:59

It's true, it's possible someone living in a yurt in Siberia hasn't heard of ginger for morning sickness.

Stickhasgrownup · 16/02/2010 18:18

As far as I've been told all anti nausea drugs should work straight away... I was told with the ones I got today I should feel the benefit within an hour! Been 5 mins so far... so watch this space!
I decided cyclizine wasn't really doing me much good. It did help a bit with the sickness, but was completely knocked out and finding it hard to cope with two children!
So I'm trying Zofran.
Seems to be more commonly used in the states, and dr/phamisist gave lots of warnings on taking it... but from my intenet reseach people who've tried everything else are calling it a miracle drug and its actually in the same drug class as cyclizine anyhow (which my dr/phamisist had no probs giving to me). No stories of effects on babys but lots of healthy babies born.
so wish me luck!!!
Did you get any different pills yet velvet?

solo · 17/02/2010 00:34

Several of my colleagues hadn't heard of ginger blah blah and as far as I'm aware, they are in north and east London oh and a mate in Australia...is that anywhere near Siberia? no yurts though.

skihorse · 17/02/2010 05:14

Bless. Teenage mums.

VelvetQuilt · 17/02/2010 08:43

Hi Stickhasgrownup,

Yes, I got some of the Prochlorperazine on Monday and it does absolutely NOTHING, so I've made an appointment for this morning to go back and request either the Cyclizine or Zofran-I'm determined to get it right and I'm in SUCH a bad mood I can't go on like this anymore!

Aubergines-normally I constantly sip water but it actually makes me feel sick after a while because it highlights that horrid taste that's always in my mouth. What a nightmare. As I'm waking up now it's all starting to come back again. ARGH!

Hi, I am 8 weeks and have been feeling lousy. went to the doc once and they said come back if you feel worse. I went back two weeks later as i was worse and found the nausea so debilitating. they have prescribed me Phenergan (promethazine hydrochrolride) and have said that that this has been prescribed for many years and has had no ill effects on babies. It is the lowest risk of anything you can take.

I have taken for a couple of days and I don't feel nausea anymore. It makes you drowsy a bit, but I would rather this than nausea. I am not sure ifI feel comfortable taking it every day , but it is good just for a break. I feel like i am existing, not living at the momenet with all this pain.
I hope you get something to help. be interested to know?

Marne · 17/02/2010 09:01

Hi, i took anti-sickness drugs with both pregnancy's but GP only let me had them as i was working with food (chef) and had to take 48 hours off of work if i was sick . They worked a treat, i only took them for a few weeks(maybe a month). Its worth asking your GP.

Stickhasgrownup · 17/02/2010 11:58

Velvet - Let me know how you get on.

Think the cyclizine def knocked me out as its midday on my first day NOT taking it and I haven't needed a nap yet! Unheard of over the past few weeks!
Zofran wise... its not a cure, but so far I feel alot better than I have been. I'd still say I have morning sickness, but hopefully now I can cope with life a little better! But I'm only on day one, so we'll see!

Good luck

VelvetQuilt · 17/02/2010 12:37

Well...I've been given some called Metoclopramide, up to three a day, so I'll see how it goes. Took the first about an hour ago. I did mention cyclizine and the doc told me to come back for that if this doesn't work. Hilarious. You have to laugh really don't you? I hope this works!!

I was thinking the same of you skihorse

Ruthyslates · 17/02/2010 21:59

Hi VelvetQuilt, my first post on mumsnet, but couldn't not reply to your question. Am 17 weeks now and had horrendous sickness/nausea from 6 weeks - so bad I couldn't move some days. I was under hospital (EPAU) care for other issues and the obs prescribed cyclizine, so they must feel confident it is reasonably safe. It wasn't a miracle cure, but did make things better, could be taken when I needed it most (evenings ironically!) and worked pretty quickly too. Not much else worked - ginger did nothing and agree if another person had recommended it I would have screamed.

Things are better now, but it has now become a constant bitter (?not really the right description) taste in the mouth that has me permanently chewing gum.

Hope yours is better soon, just hang in there

babyicebean · 18/02/2010 00:45

Thinking back I can remember how vile having 9 and a half months of sickness was they tried once and only one to give me cyclazine intraveinous (SP) now that was a weird thing it felt like being dropped slowly feet first into a warm bath and then I went all sleepy, very odd but then cyclazine did nothing for me either just knocked me out.

I think I have had every anti emetic on the market.

JollyBear · 18/02/2010 12:36

Hello velvet,

I tried lots of different meds cyclazine etc but ended up with Metoclopramide along with zofran and it helped a lot. I was still sick a few times a day but I didn't feel sick - the vomiting often took me by surprise. I'm afraid I was sick throughout my pregnancy so your nausea might not magically disappear at 13 weeks - you should be able to get it under control with the right meds though.

Instead of water try drinking lemonade. It sounds silly but it seems to stay down better than water. Nibble something like ritz crackers at the same time and it stops you just having liquid sloshing about in your stomach.

Hope you feel better soon.

Stickhasgrownup · 18/02/2010 12:58

Agree with JollyBear... I can only drink fizzy drinks - not the best concidering caffine content, but I find diet coke the best (although apparently can have up to five cans a day as not getting any caffine elsewhere) - only have 2-3 though.

larakitten · 18/02/2010 13:53

When I was pregnant with DD, I had such bad morning sickness I ended up in hospital. I tried all the prescription drugs, ginger, seasickness bands etc etc.....but my GP does Accupuncture and it was the miracle cure I needed!

Its not recommended until after 12 weeks, but it cleared my head and got rid of that sicky feeling and stopped the all day vomiting!!

Hope that helps

elizabethsmum · 19/02/2010 23:48

I had cyclizine and buccastem when pg with DD. Cyclizine tablets never worked for me although cyclizine IM injections did- although I was only given injections in hospital when i was admitted at 18 weeks and put on drips to re-hydrate.

Buccastem which is a tiny tablet which you put under your lip and disolves into the gum worked better for me. Am afraid I was pretty rubbish throughout the pg so have no real magic answers but when I could eat, things that were a bit more managable were keeping haribo sweets with me at all times and also drinking elderflower presse.

If i could give any advice it is taking each day as it comes, if you are having a really bad day then so be it. If I wasn't too bad could often make it to work, but just never rushed first thing in the morning. in the end work were really good and just said get in when you can- and I was at work a lot more than I could have been as a consequence.

I think if anything you just get better at manging the symptoms and knowing more waht you can and can't do, depending on what sort of day you are having.

Sorry have no miricle answers but I feel your pain!

tiredfeet · 23/02/2010 18:44

I've been having dreadful sickness for the past 36 hours, it started last week but only once a day, but since yesterday morning I have been sick almost 20 times so I have to see the doctor again tomorrow and I think I am going to have to start using anti sickness drugs. I know this is irrational but part of me feels like such a failure, I have been so careful not to drink alcohol etc yet now I am going to have to start taking these drugs. I also feel bad that I am such a burden on DH, I can't do anything around the house at the minute and unless things improve I won't be able to get in to work. I also feel annoyingly scared of telling my mum, as she makes out she was some kind of superwoman when pregnant/ in labour who never had any problem and she is a bit disdainful of women who do. It has helped me though reading this thread to realise I'm not the only one whose ended up poorly.

a weird thing though - we had friends staying over the weekend and my sickness totally disappeared. and DH took a couple of hours of work to be with me this morning and I wasn't sick at all until he left to go to the shops. It feels like there is an emotional element to this too. has anyone else experienced this? Its not much use though as I wouldn't fancy inviting friends round now its this bad, and DH is very busy at work so taking time out was rare treat.

LucindaE · 09/03/2010 16:36

Hi Lovely Ladies!

I hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in here but I thought that as this thread hasn't had any updates for a couple of weeks it might be worth my diving in here to say that there is a Hyperemesis Support thread a few of us have started up for women with really bad sickness or actual HG called
HYPEREMESIS AWARENESS.

We seem to have been runnng in tandem, and that is one thread nobody wants to need, but if anyone needs support, it's there for you.

lineky · 09/03/2010 16:46

Bucastam and cyclezine both helped a bit but it was injections at hospital that really helped. All I would say is don't beat yourself up over it - if you need the medication then take it. My GP was quite cautious about it but the staff at the hospital were adamant it was the best thing all round.
I hope it eases up for you soon - Ginger did nothing for me but chocolate nesquik kept me sane, I lived on it for nearly 16 weeks!

Kity · 09/03/2010 17:06

I had really bad sickness in my first pregnancy, every day sometimes all day, sometimes couldnt even keep water down. I was getting close to having to be hospitalised so I did try some anti sickness drugs (cant remember the name now) Doc assured me no ill effects on pregnancy had been discovered. Would like to point out that I had tried absolutely every other possible remedy going including travel sickness bands, all ginger products, sniffing oils you name it I tried it!
I took them for 5 days and it gave me a respite from the sickness, enough to build up a bit of energy! So from personnel experience I would say if you are desperate then try them for a short period.
Im pregnant with no2 and having bad sickness again, will wait and see how things go but I wouldnt hesitate in taking them again if I needed to.
Hope that helps

Stickhasgrownup · 09/03/2010 18:27

Hi all
I've posted previously to say that I currently have HG and have tried most anti sickness drugs... but no miracle cure for me!
Cyclizine seems to do best to stop me being sick all day... but i still feel really rough the whole time.
My mum has done some research and found the US HG website where they also suggest alternatives and quantities.
So I'm now also taking
Vit C 500mg
Vit B6 100mg
Vit K2 100micro grams
Ginger 8x 600mg (can take up to 20 a day for greater effect)

I'm on my third preg so obviously I'd tried ginger before and was ready to punch those who suggested it... however never in this quantity... goodness knows what it is on that list but I started 3 days ago and I have had my best 2 days since the HG kicked in 9 weeks ago (coming up to 15weeks now).

I'm still taking cyclizine but since I've taken these in addition I have had periods in the day where I haven't felt at all sick! Which is such a relief I can tell you.
