I had this in the last trimester and my aunt recommended standing a few feet away from a wall and leaning your head against it, keeping your body straight. It really stretches the muscles at the back of your legs and seemed to work for me- hope it does for you too!

Go up and shpwer legs with hot water and eat 1/2 grapefruit every day.

Magnesium is also meant to work. Good luck!

I have this pregnant or not - streatching is definatly a good plan - also pushing with your feet against the end of the bed. I also have to pop y hips back in - but that peobably wouldn't apply in your case

redsugar · 12/02/2010 16:02

Oh god how I hate this - getting this lots at the moment also - especially in bed at nights and my legs keep twitching like mad and just feel aching and generally exhausted LOL! I am 32 weeks and use a spray from mothercare called "lift me up leg & foot spray" its really quite good and cools my legs right down - worth a go and smells gorgeous

Trickle i also seem to have to pop my hips back in, soooo painful! i actually make a popping noise when i turn over in bed!!

I get to the point where i just want to chop my legs off from the knees down, it drives me insane and some nights i just like there crying with frustration. Will try stretching them out.

I've found that drinking tonic water helps. It does take a while to build up the quinine levels though, but only a day or so. I've read that you shouldn't drink tonic water in pregnancy because of quinine but I've also read that they use quinine in pregnancy to treat malaria.....

but it works on restless legs and oh my god it feels so nice when they stop their dancing! Mine would start their jitterbugging midafternoon and continue on into the night. Couldn't read, watch tv, sew, anything - except build my son's starwars lego models.

Hi,

Been having this too. I find a warm bath before bed followed by rubbing/massaging them really helps. Also use a vibrating massage thingy (I know that sounds mucky but I swear it isn't) and I find that helps.

I was recommended some homeopathic remedies which I will dig out and post.

Avoiding caffeine and alcohol also help and I was advised not to exercise near bedtime (fat chance!!!!).

PanicMode · 12/02/2010 19:07

This has driven me mad in all four pregnancies - it's horrendous this time round - I often have to work at my computer standing up because the only thing which helps me is pacing - which means I am getting delightful varicose veins.

I've tried all of the remedies that have been suggested - nothing has worked for me, except delivery - and I have another 10 weeks to my due date....

Really hope that one of the remedies mentioned abouve helps you.

I meant to say that some people swear by bananas - but that hasn't helped me unfortunately!!

SingleMum01 · 12/02/2010 19:29

I get achy legs and am not pregnant. I find certain foods make it worse - with me its white bread or chocolate. Strange but true!

BellasYummyMummy · 12/02/2010 22:27

i've heard sugary things can make it worse (shouldnt have scoffed all those milk choc digestives earlier), but have had a banana so maybe it will counteract!! though i daresay not as i have been feeling it coming on so am dreading going to bed. Used to love getting all snuggled up in bed...

Hmmmm Bellas - might want to get yourself to the GP - could be SPD related, in that case a phisio could help - not with the restless legs but with the hip popping. Unpleasent and a bit wierd isn't it?

LoremIpsum · 13/02/2010 05:44

I get restless legs occasionally when I'm not pregnant, but it was awful when I was.

The only thing guaranteed to fix it was, ummm, orgasm. Works every time .

bubblebabeuk · 13/02/2010 06:14

Quinine has been proven to improve RLS, I'll come back to that bit. I have a host of other medical problems (even when not pregnant lol)and for me I find restless legs affects me worse when I'm anaemic, in fact I've started using it as a guage, restless legs get problematic and invariably my iron levels are found to be below 8. On a side note I get cravings for really strong flavoured stuff I normally hate EG- those pink and blue sweets in liqurish alsorts but by the handful!

nothing seems to improve it for me except an iron infusion or a blood transfusion. obviously I'm a freaky case and a bit odd at the best of times! now Quinine, my doc's told me a deficianecy can cause restless legs but doesn't in my case as the med's I take for arthritis are full of the stuff. also B12 and folate deficiency can be responsible (I already have isues with both)

I even resorted to trying the soap in the bed trick some swear by! didnt work either lol

BellasYummyMummy · 13/02/2010 08:26

trickle i do have SPD which is most painful!

i had my first night without RLS though!!! i was so happy this morning. I ate a banana last night and used my full length body pillow to wrap my legs round and i was OK, i wonder if it was a fluke....

lol Lorem, i have found that to be helpful too!

bubble thats interesting about being anaemic, i refused my last lot of blood tests so dont know if i am or not. only 3 weeks give or take to go so hopefully all will be restored to normal by then! (well not all!)

Ouch - Ah well I think sometimes it's because when the hip is out it rest on the nerves and relocating it stops the pressure. I do find a pillow betwen my legs helps stabilie the area and stop them wandering in the first place though - so possibly not a coincidence (wonder if it's 'true' restless legs when it's this?)
