Hi all,
Any advise appreciated.
I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks in December. Prior to that I had booked annual leave with work to enjoy a nice holiday at what would have been 19-21 weeks. So after mc hubby and I decided we deserved a holiday even more and booked to go to St. Lucia next Sunday.
Now I am pregnant again (5+2 = vv early) which we're obviously delighted about but also a bit worried same will occur.

So I can't have the full benefit of the all inclusive :-( and will be wearing very sexy flight socks due to increased risks of DVT. What else should I avoid? I am fair skinned so always wear high protection sunscreen and stay under a sun umbrella anyway. Am prone to insect bites but use the AVON moistuiser oil as it works better for me than insect repellants (I read you can't use these because of DEET?)

Anyone got any top tips? Much appreciated

My top tip would be to enjoy yourself and rest lots - in the shade! Keep yourself hydrated and try to wander about on the flight where possible.

Tell the airline you're pregnant, when I was pregnant I got upgraded to business - I was 28 weeks but still worth a go!

You are very newly pregnant and lots of people wouldnt even know by now so you can have a lovely rest and remember this as your last childfree holiday ....have a fantastic time.

ArcticFox · 12/02/2010 01:46

You can use DEET when you're pregnant according to my Obs as it doesnt cross the placenta, but if you dont need it and the natural stuff works, don't bother.

If there is a jacuzzi tub apparently it should be avoided (bummer)

Have a great time and congratulations.

agree with nickschick - this is your last childfree holiday so really make the most of it - no one will even guess you are pregnant so just be cool, keep cool, drinks lots of water and relax

hi there

I went to the carribean at 7 weeks, and had a lovely time. The advice re hot tubs is correct, and also no massages (boo!- unless a specific mum to be one).

I was wary about Deet but weighed it up against the dangers of being bitten, and so would get hubby to go outside and spray the outside of my sleeves/bottom of dresses with it, which seemed to work, although had to severely limit my wardrobe to maxi dresses. I also took a pashimna to stop the little buggers biting me in the evenings. Also, my doc prescribed me a precautionary anti histamine in case I did get badly bitten, and also gave me some morning sickness tablets. I never needed them, but he said I may as well have some with me, because if it kicked in whilst on holiday it would really spoil things.

Flight socks are also a must on long haul; not very sexy but hey!

Use common sense with the food; particularly buffet stuff that has been left out a while. I also checked cheeses etc were pasturised before I ate them. I didnt realise and had heaps of ice cream from a self serve machine, but that too is a big no-no apparently due to listeria (although it didnt seem to harm us!)

Finally, it is a bummer to miss out on the all inclusive, although i found that when we let the wait staff know, they went out of their way to make me lovely fancy non alcoholic cocktails. (and between us, i had maybe 5 or 6 proper drinks during the whole two weeks and they too didnt harm!)

Relax and enjoy!

St Lucia is wonderful! ::wistful sigh:: Just stay hydrated really- I went in March a few years ago and it was really quite hot. Have a great time!

Thanks all. I plan to put my feet up and relax, and cannot wait!!!

What's the deal with the jacuzzi then?

It will be great, have a lovely time.

re: jacuzzi: some say that bubbles up your fanjo not ideal - I told my friend who is a GP and she laughed and laughed and said well just don't sit on a jet then! She also said not good to get too hot, but lots of jacuzzis aren't that hot - you'll have to see when you get there.

re: massages, most places will not do any massages for women in early pregnancy, even pregnancy ones - fair enough in very early pregnancy but I went to a spa at 18 weeks and the person who did pregnancy massages wouldn't do until 20 weeks, not even just shoulders & back, or legs, I was a bit cross about it actually.

chestnut100 · 12/02/2010 13:57

the jacuzzi is defo with regards to heat rather than bubbles! Really dangerous for your core temp to rise as baby is always 1 degree warmer than you. Most jacuzzis have a notice at side saying pregnant women should not use etc, i just never noticed till I was pregnant myself!

Nataliejayne85 · 12/02/2010 20:31

As a massage therapist I won't do massages in the first 3 months due to insurance reasons only. This is due to the unlimited and unknown reasons of miscarrage.
I believe it is completely safe and great even in pregnancy, I am still having massages in my first trimster though as a therapist I just say I don't want my stomach massaged and say no to being pregnant. Though you must avoid aromatherapy massages as some essential oils are contra-indicated due to the actions of the oil to bring on contractions.

Have fun in the sun and try to relax as much as you can!
Why not could order all the alcoholic cocktails asking for them with no alcochol?
Also Cranberry and orange juice looks like a great cocktail (good when your driving or preg as I am now as everyone thinks you drinking with them)

Let us know how the holiday goes!!

splatt · 13/02/2010 09:47

So how is a jacuzzi different to a bath?!

OP posts:
MrsHappy · 13/02/2010 09:53

Jacuzzis can get a lot hotter than baths and the person using them does not always control the temperature.

MumNWLondon · 14/02/2010 00:22

Not really a difference between hot bath and hot jacuzzi.... of course the temp of jacuzzi is not in your control, but I had no worries about jacuzzis at centre parks that were not any hotter (possibly colder) than baths I would have taken.

ArcticFox · 14/02/2010 14:21

I think one of the issues is that jacuzzis in cold countries (like hot tubs on ski chalet terraces) are heated up pretty high to offset the outside temperature and as you have cold arms/ shoulders you might not realise how warm you're getting.

If it's a swimming pool temperature one I cant see the problem.

mosschops30 · 14/02/2010 14:27

I went on holiday when pg with ds1 and ds2. I still enjoyed it, had the odd glass of wine, sat on the edges of the jacuzzi just dangled legs in so didnt get core temp too hot.
Enjoyed the sun and sunbathed every day but needed a higher factor on my bump because skin was stretched and therefore more vulnerable to burn.

Just enjoy it because you'll be slumming it in holiday villages with screaming children for the next 10 years
