In 2008 i got told that i had a blood clotting disorder of Factor V leiden (this was after putting my self forward to be a surrogate for some friends) I had DVT after having my DD2 in 2005. (no tests done at the time)

I'm now expecting no 3.i had a mmc at nearly 10wks last may, i was due to start having injections from 9wks, this time its started now. different doc, different opinion. after mmc they said that it was unlikely that the Factor v had any thing to do with it as i have two children already???.
so i'm having daily injections to thin the blood (7 days in) already a bruised pin cushion. ow ow ow

I wondered whether there are any others out there who have similar and how they are coping.

info,advice etc gratefully received.

greetings,

after 3 mmc I was finally diagnosed as having lupus anticoagulant antibodies and a mfthr mutation, both of which require me to have daily heparin injections to keep my blood nice and thin for my current pregnancy. I also take 150mg asprin by mouth. I am presently 33w gone and this time everything is going swimmingly (knock on wood).

I inject into my tummy fat every night. I rarely get bruises now. I think I have mastered the technique. It seems to help if i inject into an area I can pinch and hold firmly while injecting and always on my sides, never in the middle of my tummy. basically the looser the skin the better.

The daily needles are annoying but you do get used to them and your technique will improve. On the upside you will probably get more scans than a "normal" pregnancy. I was always quite happy for that. More chances to see the little munchkin before she makes her grand entrance.

I have the same problem and am on daily heparin injections and was for my previous pregnancy. I have to start them the moment I find out I'm pregnant and take them for 6 weeks afterwards
I am now at 9 + 4 and find sometimes the injections hurt sometimes they don't but for me I guess they are the thing keeping me healthy so I don't really mind.
what I ahve found is the care I recieve has been amazing and my haematologist is fab and knows my case so well after 4 pregnancies ( 1 miscarriage) that I get really good antenatal care

Thank you for the advice, nice to know there are others out in the same boat.

i'm hoping that the extra care will be there i guess i have to wait and see when i see the midwife on the 1st march, they did mention at one stage of bring that forward but have heard nothing.

thanks once again

I also have Factor V Leiden, and have had to inject myself twice daily during each of my pregancies. Also (not really relevant) I have to carry syringes and inject when I fly longhaul.

As others say, you get used to doing the jabs - although some days are worse than others. Make sure to change the place you stick the needle in all the time - even if only by a couple of cm - to give the flesh a chance to recover.

Good luck with it!

I too have Factor V Leiden, after they discovered it when i had a DVT & PE at the age of 19 due to the pill, i havent have any reoccurent clots since the first episode.

I am now 29 yrs & am 35 weeks pregnant with our first bub, the doc has put me on daily injections of Fragmin up until 38 weeks, then will resume after bub is here for a further 8 weeks

My thighs look like pin cushion, sometimes if i inject too fast i get a whopping big bruise, though i know the injections are only temp & we will have a beautiful bub in a few weeks.

I have a great Haematologist who i have seen since the first clotting episode & also a great OB, who sees my disorder as a 'challenge' rather than a hinderance since i am the first patient he has had with Factor V.

Wishing you all the very best!
