Brown spotting at 9 weeks

Last week I had brown spotting so I went to the EPU for a scan to see if everything was ok with the baby. The doctor did the scan and advised everything looked fine and showed me the heartbeat.

I was so relieved that everything was ok with the baby, that I didn't think to ask any questions about where this blood was coming from. I wasn't given any advice about what to do next and just went home - I practically ran out the door!

Anyway, I am still getting this spotting a week later and am unsure what to do. Am I supposed to go back or just monitor it?? I feel such an idiot for not asking any questions at the time, my maternity unit is always so busy and the receptionists are so bloody rude I feel bad for contacting them!

I was wondering if anyone had been in the same situation as me and what advice you were given?

Thanks

Hi Sammy, congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had this and I was terrified.

I also had pain and ended up in A&E on a Friday night until 3am. (not a pleasant experience).

I was booked in for a scan on the Monday morning and an internal scan showed the little bean and its heartbeat - I was over the moon!

I was told in A&E and by my GP that spotting at this stage in pregnancy is very common, and it is not normally anything to worry about - especially if it is brown (old blood).

I think I had more spotting a few weeks later and told the midwife and she said the same.

Try not to worry, but perhaps go back to your GP or midwife if it continues.

Thanks TCOI - that makes me feel a lot better.

I was wondering if they try and find out where the blood is coming from, but I guess not.

I had no bleeding at all in my first pregnancy and I cant help worrying that there is something wrong this time.

PS You were very brave going to A&E on a Friday night....

No I don't think they try to find out at all.

I think because it is so common at this stage.

Lol, I know, I would not recommend it!!

this happened to me too; i was told to keep an eye on it and only ot go back in theblood appeared fresh (which it never did). I think it stopped about 10 weeks, and now am 22 weeks along.

I worried myself so much about it, but i promise you, there really is no need, as long as it stays light and brown (without wanting to gross you out too much, mine went very jellyish at the end)

This happened to me too, blood was never fresh either brown or dark purple (TMI I know!).
Things worked out fine and 18 mo dd now. I remember it being very stressful though. Good luck

You sound the same as me - i've had constant spotting for the last month or so (once or twice a week and i'm now 12 weeks) - i've been to the EPU twice and the scans have been fine. The midwife looked at my cervix the second time round and said that i have a cervical ectroption (excuse spelling!) and that things like walking, sex, bowel movements, anything really can cause a bleed if you have this - it is very common (used to be called cervical erosion). If you are worried you should go back to the EPU - dont let rude staff or them being busy put you off. They are there to help you. Have you booked in with a midwife yet? If so, give her a ring and see what she says. She might be able to look at your cervix at least to see if the blood is coming from there.
I was told that if the bleeding isnt accompanied by pain then things are probably fine. That doesnt stop me worrying though and i'm planning on giving the midwife a ring tomorrow morning to ask about spotting today.

I'm 7 weeks and just had a scan yesterday to confirm everything was ok, which it is

But I'd had a week and a half of discharge of varying shades, ending in brown. They couldn't see what was causing it but not unduly concerned, just said if it continues make sure and tell GP, so that would be my advice.

I'm sure all is fine, once you have seen a heartbeat the chances of things going wrong are reduced. From the miscarriage association site:

'Research has shown that if you see a heartbeat at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the chances of the pregnancy continuing are 78%. A heartbeat at 8 weeks increases the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks to 99.4%. So things could still go wrong, but as long as there is a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage decreases as the weeks go by.'

Good luck and take it easy.
