Meat has never looked or smelt so appealing, I'm craving it so much but feel guilty for even thinking about it! WWYD?

Been a veggie for 25 years. When you say you are 'craving' it, don't you really mean you just fancy it and you are potentially using the pregnancy as an excuse?

I am pregnant again at the moment but meat would be the last thing I'd crave. Gin and tonic, more like. Though I do eat fish oil capsules when pregnant (don't normally eat fish or meat).

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/02/2010 16:46

Lady Thompson, well, probably a bit, I do fancy it. However I've not "given in" for 18 years and I don't usually fancy it. I prepare meat fairly often for my family but never felt tempted to try any myself. (Come on I must be able to blame the pregnancy a bit!! some people munch coal and laundry starch!)

Well I am highly carniverous so my view comes from there.

I reckon that "cravings" are usually for things that your body wants a bit more of - the low iron is a dead giveaway - anaemia is very common in pg and red meat an excellent source.

If you would feel comfotable eating some which is decent free range then i would just do it TBH.

If you don't how about some fish? You need to make sure it's been sourced with environment and fish stocks in mind though

If you want to maintain your veggie-ness, then you'll just have to be strong! Sorry. And keep taking the iron tablets...

If you do have some come back and tell us how it was!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/02/2010 17:04

I eat fish anyway (mum insisted on that as I was only 10 when we went veggie and at the time quorn and the like wasn't invented so we just had evil substances like TVP and sosmix which isn't evil but you can't eat it for every meal) so fish isn't really an issue.

I don't think mum had a choice in going veggie either you know, isn't that mad? Dad didn't appreciate dissent.

I do think I'm going to have some so I will let you know if I vomit how I get on.

Ooh I craved meat too when pg with ds....have been veggie (although eat fish) for 18 years....I succumbed to a sausage roll in an M&S petrol station once (honestly - that was what I wanted!!) Been back on the veggie wagon ever since

ImSoNotTelling · 09/02/2010 17:14

But if you eat fish, you're not a veggie, surely

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/02/2010 17:40

I'mSoNot, well not by the proper definition no, but I was never militant about it and it's generally just easier to tell people I'm a veggie who eats fish.

I was never a soapbox veggie, and anyway I bloody hate aubergines. Why do 95% of vegetarian meals contain the buggers?

OP posts:
JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/02/2010 17:41

Eew, yeah can't blame you if you had a cold sausage roll detoxdiva. I don't fancy that at all!

In my opinion, if you eat fish...you are not a proper vegetarian at all!

I craved meat during pregnancy...perhaps it was my hormones, perhaps my body craved certain vitamins...I DO regret the meat fest I indulged in...was like 'falling off the wagon' lol...but at the end of the day it is up to you...and you do not have to justify your decisions to anyone other than yourself so don't worry about it too much.

teasle · 09/02/2010 17:47

LOL at aubergines reference!

Morloth · 09/02/2010 17:49

I pander to my cravings, my body knows what it is doing.

Now thinking about a big drippy steak. If you can manage it the rib eye from Waitrose is excellent and you can cook it all the way through and it is still juicy.

Ugh they are! courgettes too. And don't get me started on avocados, the slimy green glop pear masquerading as a health food instead of an emetic.

I hate aubergines and courgettes as well

They are soggy squashy and weird and taste gross.

So does anyone actually like them?

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/02/2010 18:32

I'm going to start a petition against vegetarian foods having to contain squeaky squelchy slug-like veg. I bet they're the reason why veggies have a reputation for having terrible wind y'know. (Not me, obviously. Ahem)

ImSoNotTelling · 09/02/2010 19:33

If I was a veggie I would live on cheese and giant field mushrooms

They are the most meat-like things somehow

pandora69 · 09/02/2010 19:43

I think I just love food, full stop! I love courgettes - mmmm, courgette and feta fritters! And avocado salsa with a spicy beef fajita - delish! I have nothing against augergines, but don't really know what to do with them. They are tasty in mediterranean cooking though.

All this talk of food is making me hungry, and I've just finished a chip butty!

vanloadtovenice · 10/02/2010 08:48

This is so funny. I was the same with DD1, and gave in completely! I did make sure, and still do, that the meat was organic/well sourced. I buy mine from M&S or Waitrose.

Think It's ridiculous to say 'stay strong' - you can always return to being veggie once your cravings subside.

ClaireVictoria · 10/02/2010 10:01

Wow so it does happen to lots of others!! I have absolutely no craving for meat but fish - now that is a different matter all together! I started to dream of whiter than white fillet chunks splitting open, encased in crisper than crisp batter. Nights were like a continuous M&S advert for fish but not just any fish!!!

In the end I ate some salmon in a restaurant. It was such a strong flavour and I could taste is for the next couple of days! I have decided to eat fish as and when I fancy it - hey I am putting it down my baby having a big brain!!

I trust my body and if tells me to eat fish I will. 25 years ago there were not the more friendly options available now days so it is easier to be more ethical.

Ignore extremists on either side!

PSCMUM · 10/02/2010 10:07

eat some meat.

pinkmagic1 · 10/02/2010 10:15

You lot obviously havn't tasted my Aubergine fritters!
I think, judging by your reason for going veggie in the first place maybe a little free range meat wouldn't be totally out of order. Funnily enough I went totally off meat while pregnant, to the degree I couldn't even walk up the meat aisle in the supermarket.

Bobbiewickham · 10/02/2010 10:30

Bloody hell, I love courgettes and aubergines!

Split a courgette down the middle lengthways, brush it with garlic olive oil, griddle it so it's just tender and has lovely stripes on it, squeeze lemon on and sprinkle with sea salt.

Gorgeous!

cyteen · 10/02/2010 10:38

I had a total palate change when pg with DS - went from non-meat eater due to hating the taste/texture/smell/fat, to shovelling in steak like it was going out of fashion. While pg it was only steak, but since his birth I've started eating most meaty things, even stuff I had previously never liked e.g. sausages (still not into lamb though). I just try and buy ethically. As another poster said, I wanted DS to grow up eating everything with the option to make his own dietary choices later in life, and it's much easier this way.
