I can't help at all, I have had similar experiences but have no idea what causes it.
I realise you posted this some time ago but can you call midwife/out of hours GP/NHS Direct for advice? Good to get agony at any stage in pregnancy checked out, I think.
...Although I hope by now you're feeling better and getting some rest!

sheep, how many weeks are you? What was your last antenatal visit like?

differentnameforthis · 08/02/2010 03:48

Posting this in case I am not here when you get back

Thank you for replying and the links. I phoned labour ward and she didn't seem to concerned only if the pain got worse then I should go in.I feel a bit better now. I'm 26 weeks. My last midwife appointment was ok, very rushed though and I didn't get the oppoertunity to tell her about the heartburn or my swollen ankles.

I've had this sort of heartburn before though and it does go away but each time I get it which is about once a week now the pain is getting worse.

let us know how you get on

ohloverguts · 08/02/2010 10:53

Hiya, obviously you should get checked out to make sure its nothing more serious, but ive been having heartburn in my back since being pregnant and was told it definitely CAN cause pain there, and pretty much everywhere on your upper body! The first time it happened i thought something was seriously wrong cos it was agony! I always get it either up my spine and throat or more to the right shoulderblade of my back and if its bad it will stop me in my tracks. I have vomitited countless times from literally feeling so sick from it! It is one of the most painful things ive had to deal with in pregnancy and although ive had heartburn/indigestion before i didnt know quite how painful it can be. You can get medication to stop your stomach from making so much acid rather than just using gaviscon etc as it has a much longer effect (if you find out is IS heartburn, of course!), hope the check up goes well for you!

ohloverguts · 08/02/2010 10:55

Sorry, i meant to say vomited, hehe.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 08/02/2010 12:56

ohloversguts I'm not being funny, but my midwives told me it was "just" heartburn. If it is pain that is making you sick you should be investigated for HELLP too. You sound like you are in too much pain for it just to be heartburn. Please read the link above and get checked out as HELLP is life threatening for you and your baby

ohloverguts · 08/02/2010 17:40

Bonjour ..I have been investigated to a certain extent but was never offered a blood test or anything, just had bp and urine checked which was all fine. Do you think i should push for more testing?! I am worried after reading the post you linked! Although, i must say, taking heartburn medicine makes it disappear for a while and i DO get burning with my pain which in the post it says you dont get? No other symptoms or anything either.
Sorry.. i am a bit of a hypochondriac, wasnt even aware of this HELLP thing (first timer without a clue!)

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 08/02/2010 17:50

Have you got any other signs like headaches or any of those listed on the link? Its just that you say how pai nful it is and that it radiates across your torso. It might be worth asking your midwife " how do you know its not hellp"?

ohloverguts · 08/02/2010 18:20

No, no other symptoms on the list, and i also definitely have no sign of even a remotely high BP. It has actually decreased slightly with each visit. I think i do just suffer from really severe heartburn, maybe due to the fact that i had it before being pg but it is just so much worse since then, but anyway i will definitely bring it up with her next week at my appointment, or go into hospital next time it happens, whatever one comes first! Thanks for your advice! At least im aware now that there are more serious things it COULD be, i am rather naive!!

MudandRoses · 08/02/2010 22:31

That does sound like classic acid reflux (heartburn) - I have just been prescribed Omeprazole for it and it is helping a lot. The pain in the back is diminishing although I still have to be careful to eat small amounts, not drink at the same time, not lie down while full, sleep on a slope, and avoid trigger foods! (caffeine, fruit juices, yogurt, etc).

sheepgomeep · 08/02/2010 23:32

Hello.. I've been to the doctors and my blood pressure appears normal. She wasn't particularly helpful and said she thought the pain was muscular brought on by an attack of heartburn and refused to give me any prescription for the heartburn.

I'm thinking about going back to see another doc at the surgery who is a bit more sympathetic. Can you take omneprazole when you are pg, dp has some in the cupboard

Yes, you can. I am 8 wks. you can also take ranitidine (not both at the same time tho) and you dont need a prescription for that. Seems like rather an obtuse doctor you have there! Good luck. Second opinion sounds worth it - and i suggested Omeprazole to the doc myself after researching.
