Hi

I have had 3 previous c sections and am due fourth section and fourth baby in June.

Went for 20 week scan on monday and have been told there is an amniotic band. Which can prove fatal to the unborn baby, I have been told not to worry too much as appears band is quite a bit away from the baby at the moment. Of course I googled this and it appears amniotic bands are very rare and only really occur in women who have had previous c sections.

Have also been told have a low lying placenta, that there is a risk it is attached to the old scars in which case could be very dangerous. I will get another scan at 32 weeks to check where placenta is. Again this is common in women who have had c sections.

I felt so down after being told about these issues. The registrar actually had me in tears as she was sayig there is a risk the babys limbs could be amputated by the amniotic band when in the womb and there is no point checking with follow on scans. I had to ask her for a scan in four weeks or so,just for my own peace of mind.

She went to check if I would be allowed a follow on scan due to the worry. . Came back and said the consultant advised since all my baby's limbs appear normal there is no point in worrying about the band as it is obviously causing no damage to the baby.

Has anyone else had one or more sections and then had any of these issues with subsequent pregnancies.

hi colie - have a look at this article which might reassure you www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/scans/amnioticbandexpert/
from what you said it sounds like the reg you saw got you v worried but the consultant didn't think there was reason to be concerned. i've had that with other complications, ended up worrying so much about what turned out to be nothing. can you get an appointment to talk things through with the consultant?
as far as the placenta is concerned, it's v common to be low at 20wks with or without previous sections, and v common for it to move up on its own by 32wks. Good luck, hope it all goes well for you

Tiredmumzzz - thanks.

I did google but didn't come across that article. That has really reassured me. I had the scan on monday and the sonographer and midwife said exactly what is in that article. Basically nothing to worry about with regards to amniotic band. They didn't mention the low lying placental.

I had an appointment with the consultant on the tuesday and had to go myself. I came out feeling awful and so down after everything she said to me (rather the registrar said to me). Cried the whole of tuesday night. Dh is away monday to friday as well so just felt morbid on tuesday.

Feel alot better after reading that article. Thanks.

If I begin to feel so down about the two conditions again I will ask if I can speak to the consultant before 32 weeks.

Thanks again.
