Exactly as subject bar says. I'm well snotty and fed up of not being able to blow my nose without retching, and not being able to breathe. It's affecting my sleep cos I can't breathe and it's driving me up the bloody wall.

Help please, before I pull out my hair and go bald

You too, Kaylo? I'm getting a little disturbed now by how much we seem to be mirroring one another! Are you my clone, or am I yours??

Anyway... I've also been suffering with a cold all week, including losing the ability to breathe through my nose. You don't realise how good decongestants are until you can't have them. Blown my nose so much it's raw now and I keep giving myself snotty nosebleeds. Delightful...

I'm afraid I've not got a whole lot of advice. According to the local parmacist, Vicks Vapourub is ok to use. I've been liberally coating myself with it before bed, and I tried putting some in boiling water too and steaming. I can't say it was a massive success, though.

Failing that, hot drinks seemed to help a little. I'm not a tea/coffee fan so I've been having hot Ribena with a bit of honey in it (really soothes the throat) or hot lemonade. The steam and bubbles seem to clear the nose a little! Also, hot showers helped a bit too, probably the steam again.

Not sure if any of that is any help, or anything you haven't tried already. Hopefully someone will come on with more suggestions! I think I'm coming out the other side now, at least. Managed to get some sleep last night and I can currently breathe through my nose - oh the excitement!

Spirael · 04/02/2010 09:08

That would be pharmacist rather than parmacist... But the latter would probably be the more accurate pronunciation when bunged up.

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 09:22

Hey Spirael

We do actually seem to be very very alike don't we?
Speaking of....whats your due date? Mine recently got changed to 29th July, so looks like we both may be having July babies - rather than May ones

I'm gonna try hot juice drinks to see how helpful that is - I only have Robinsons tho, I'm sure it'll work just the same.

I also have been liberally applying Vicks Vaporub before bed, gonna buy some Olbas Oil as well I think. Will also try inhalation method of Vicks as well.

Need to do something - I sound like a flipping 5 year old sniffing up all the time

You can take the regular dose of paracetamol. Not much good for decongesting you, but good for the pain/discomfort and if you are a bit hot.

Sympathies - I am pg and had a cold last week - it is horrid.

Spirael · 04/02/2010 09:52

My date has fluctuated between 21st July to 25th July, Kaylo, so I'm only a few days ahead of you! Are you going to wander into the Due July topic as well as hanging out in August?

For me, I think the later date more likely to be the one, as my world seems to revolve around that day. My DH, the MW and my BF all have the same birthday of the 25th July! I'm pretty sure fate might be laughing at me.

Oh well... At least it'll make remembering birthdays a lot easier.

BornToFolk · 04/02/2010 10:14

Camomile tea is brilliant for colds and might even help you sleep. I add some lemon juice and honey to it too.
Pregnancy can give you a stuffy nose anyway and colds are horrible, I sympathise! Hope you are better soon.

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 10:23

Spirael Is it silly to say I find the July thread a bit scary? I only really know you!! I might lurk tho, and post occasionally @)

at 25th July popularity!! Gonna be an expensive month for you I feel...

BornToFolk I wish I liked camomile tea, I've heard so many good things about it!! Thanks anyway tho hun

a good chilli con carne. I swear by them.

Spirael · 04/02/2010 12:52

Aww, they're not that scary in the July thread. ... Well, maybe a little. Is there a different thread we could both sneak into?

July is going to be a very expensive month, I think I'll be kissing my payslip goodbye until I retire for that one! I was actually debating whether to try skipping a month in TTC so to avoid that time period, but since my success rating hadn't been astounding I figured it'd be just another dud month in the great scheme of things. Apparently, that was enough to trigger sods law!

Not that I'm complaining too much, it is a really nice time of year for the LO to have a birthday, in the middle of summer, pretty much half-way through the year from Christmas. So pressies and stuff are all spread out and the party can (hopefully) happen out in the garden or at the park!

Anyway, I'll stop deviating and get back on topic. I'd love it if a good spicy meal helped with nasal congestion, but currently I seem to be immune to the effects of chilli! Always used to make my nose run, but the one time I actually want it to... Bah!

I wonder if snorting ground black pepper would help?

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 12:59

Ooooh, I love chilli con carne!!!! And it happens to be something I could eat til it comes out of my ears!!!

Will try tonight on a jacket potato (or chips...)

My ds's birthday is 3rd July and his party has always been a barbeque
This year he's having a pirate party where the kids are dressing up and we're having a treasure hunt in the back garden . Again there will be normal party food, but a BBQ as well for the mums and dads.
DH is cooking this year however considering I'll probably burn my bump cos I'll be huge!!

Lots of fresh root ginger.

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 14:54

fresh root ginger - what do I do with it?

mumabee · 04/02/2010 15:35

My sympathies, am also preg and had a cold 3 weeks ago.

I took paracetamol for the first 3 days but it started to irritate my tummy and took it sparingly for the rest of the week. I rubbed Vicks vaporub on my neck, back and chest and drank lots of hot squash, which helped soothe my sore throat, clear the blocked nose and encouraged mucus production. And put lots of vaseline on my very dry and cracked nose and lips.

Hope you feel better soon.

ASAPWW · 04/02/2010 16:00

Try grating it in hot water with lemon and honey. Ginger has great properties for fighting infections and is generally very good for you. Hope you feel better x

KayloHalo · 04/02/2010 16:04

Awww, thanks Mumabee I've been drinking hot blackcurrant squash today on the advice of Spirael adn actually feel a little better. It definitely helps!!!

I've figured out as well that the office is really warm, and that makes my blocked nose worse.
I have been taking paracetamol but didn't feel it really did anything, and have also been slathering on the vaseline!!

xx

Come over to the July thread - it's a friendly place!

My due date changed from 10th Aug to 12th July after dating scan - whoops!

Also been suffering from a horrid cold this week and took Monday off work which I wouldn't normally do but needed the rest as no sleep due to the breathing through the nose thing! Someone on mn recommended a plug in kiddie decongestant vaporiser but my local chemists are rubbish and don't sell them. Olbas oil on radiators? Nothing compares to lemsip...

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 08:08

Hi Flex I remember you from the earlier threads for August

I'm thinking about peeping my head around the door of July, since baby will probably be born in that month anyway - I've never gone over yet - watch this one be 2 wks late!!!

OP posts:
Rocinante · 05/02/2010 08:14

Poor you, can sympathise as I had this a few weeks ago, and somebody mentioned that the Boots equivalent of Lemsip doesn't have decongestant in so you can take it.

It is just the equivalent of honey/lemon in hot water with a small dose of paracetamol so you could make it at home really - but if you're working it might be good to have some in the office with you.

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 08:30

You're right, they'd be perfect for the office.

To be honest - I think the office makes me feel worse cos it's always so warm!!
