Injection to speed up delivery of placenta

Does it really make you feel sick? I just read this on another thread (the scary one on discussion of the day!) but had never heard it before. If so, I think I'd rather do without. Anyone know why it's a good idea to have it? Anyone delivered the placenta naturally?

Can't remember feeling sick from it. I'm sure I had it all four times. Had a lot of trouble with my placenta with DC4 so i'm sure I must have had it.

Ignore the scary stories, everyone is different and their experience won't be the same as yours.

good luck

I had the injection and it did not make me sick, but after having it i then had a retained placenta and had to have it manually removed; still not sure if that woukd have happened if i had tried for a natural third stage.

But as far as I know, does not make you sick.

MrsBadger · 03/02/2010 19:37

I had a natural 3rd stage this time and twas ace - just sat in the pool cuddling ds and after about 30min the mw said 'can you do a little push?' and I did and out it flopped.

last time dd had the cord round her feet and detached the placenta as she was born - obv I bled impressively so they jabbed me and got the placenta out asap. Didn't make me sick though.

go in with an open mind - you may not need the jab at all.

I had it with both of mine (still took a while to deliver it with dd1), i didn't feel sick at all, the only thing that made me feel sick was G&A.

meoww · 03/02/2010 20:03

My midwife said that delivering the placenta used to be one of the most dangerous parts of child bearing. If it'sleft in too long/bits break off/doesnt all come out etc could cause very dangeous infection.

The injection which u will honestly barely notice at such a time gets it all out really quickly.
I'd hate to have to start struggling with the placenta anymore than i have to at a time when i want to coo over my baby

Trickle · 03/02/2010 20:15

There different reasons to have and not to have it. The injection encourages the blood vessles to close and the placenta to detatch so it reduces the risk of bleeding. You have to have the cord cut soon after or it transfers to the baby and they have to pull on the cord if the placenta is not coming fast enough to stop you retaining it becasue the injection also speeds up how fast the exit closes

It does make it safer in tems of bleeding and easier for the medical team dealing with you.

If you want the cord to stop pulsing before you cut it you cannot have the injection at the usual time - as the shoulders are born, you can either delay or see if you can have a natural third stage.

Pro's and con's it's all individual - some people think you are crazy for saying no.

twowellies · 03/02/2010 20:24

Have had injection twice - no sickness. However midwife wanted to deliver placenta naturally with ds2 and in throes of labour I agreed (although I had written it on my birthplan!) Long story short, placenta stuck, 2 injections and some blood loss later everyone decided it would have been a good idea! Do what you feel is right.

del1 · 03/02/2010 20:34

I was too busy cuddling our new born baby to notice. Not sure if I was even asked if I wanted the needle? Think she just stuck it inmy leg, but didn't hurt. it fell out within a few minutes, but again didn't really notice, as we were far too busy with our new baby. I know there was hardly any blood? I will be having the needle again this time, as it meant I could shower and go and chill with my new family quicker!

fifitot · 03/02/2010 20:39

Yes puked my guts up I'm afraid.

Bumperlicious · 03/02/2010 20:44

If you have a natural birth with no interventions there is no obvious need for it, despite what one of my midwives thought . As I was trying to push DD out she filled up a syringe and put it next to me despite me insisting that I didn't want it, then tried to force it on me after DD was born. The other midwife had to tell her to back off. Placenta came out within 5 mins.

winnybella · 03/02/2010 20:46

I got in iv- do you normally get it as an injection? It was in France, though.
Anyway, had it twice, was fine.

sallyjaygorce · 03/02/2010 20:47

I didn't intend to have it - wanted all natural but after each of my three totally natural births I felt impatient to be finished and get cosy with the new baby so changed my mind and said yes at the last minute every time. It never made me feel sick even when followed minutes later by champagne.

ScarlettCrossbones · 03/02/2010 22:57

I didn't have it with DS ? was trying to be all natural and hippy-dippy ? placenta came out in maybe 15 mins.

Didn't intend to have it with DD, but mws spotted a bit of too-heavy bleeding and basically swung into action and strongly advised me to take it. Placenta popped out with zero effort after literally about 2 mins IIRC.

It was so kind of neat and easy and splashfree(!) with DD that I think I'm just going to ask for it again in May with DC3 ? can't be bothered waiting, tbh!

No, it didn't make me sick at all (and I'm planning to join you with the post-injection champagne this time, sallyjay!!)

GlastonburyGoddess · 03/02/2010 23:01

with ds1 i had it, no problems, wasnt sick. with ds2 I didnt want it, had waterbirth and started bleeding prefusely, cue me having to heave myself out the pool minutes after he was born, gushing blood everywhere to have it done.

MumNWLondon · 03/02/2010 23:06

I asked not to have it..... then 30 mins later no sign of placenta.... I was impatient and uncomfortable had the injection and out it came and no sickness... Will ask for it this time.

have to do what you feel comfortable with...

sleepysleepy · 03/02/2010 23:15

It doesn't happen often but there is a risk of major bleeding from problems delivering the placenta: a friend of mine had the last rites read after needing 8 units of blood transfused when her placenta failed to separate and the uterine vessels didn't close down properly.

I know people question a lot of what is done by midwives and doctors these days, but what happened to her really stuck with me: of course most people will be fine with a natural third stage, but we are all offered the injection to prevent something this catastrophic happening. I had it twice and barely noticed.

Good luck for your delivery!

susiey · 04/02/2010 14:23

I had the injection both times It didn't make me sick either time and by then I just wanted a shower and a cuddle with my baby not to be waiting,

my midwife asked if I wanted it once I got to the labour ward ( will confess had no idea what it was they had to explain it to me!) but am really glad I said yes to it

3andahalfmonkeys · 04/02/2010 14:32

With ds1 I had it and threw up everywhere, ds2 had it but wasn't sick. Delivered naturally with ds3 after a good hour after having baby mw asked if i could give one last push and it just plopped out. Tbh i had forgotten about the placenta but had had an eventful birth ( delivered in car)

becks130 · 05/02/2010 10:35

I had it DS1 and it didn't make me feel sick at all, all I remember is the midwife telling to cough a few times and that was it delivered! I'm due to be induced on Sunday and I will be having the injection again. Good luck x

hugebelly · 05/02/2010 19:31

I had the injection and didn't feel sick. Had a relatively small contraction and the placenta plopped out without me having to push. I did need to use gas and air though.

Morloth · 05/02/2010 19:48

I had it last time, didn't feel sick. This time I think I will give the placenta 20mins or so. TBH I completely lost interest in the whole process once I had my baby.
