20 week scan

Hi. Maybe a silly question but I have my 20 week scan on Monday and I was wondering whether you are supposed to have a full bladder for it? I am assuming that the baby is big enough (and sticking out enough!) to be seen regardless but thought I'd check just in case.

Thanks.

no - you don't need a full bladder

at my 20 week scan I got told off because my bladder wasn't full enough, it's better to go with a full bladder you can always empty it if it's not needed, otherwise you could waste time by trying to drink if you went without and needed it to be full IYSWIM

I think this might depend by area. I'm pretty sure at my hospital (Kings) you don't need to have a full bladder. If they haven't advised you to have a full one I wouldn't do anything different.

Hi, i was asked to have a full bladder for mine

bagelmonster · 02/02/2010 16:20

Hi

I wasnt asked for full bladder and was actually thirsty as I had rushed there without having a drink for a while and they had no probs finding baby.

sheeplikessleep · 02/02/2010 16:21

I also went to my 20 week fit to bursting.

I was so uncomfortable, the sonographer said that at 20 weeks, there is no need to have a full bladder and let me go and have a wee. She said you only really need a full bladder in the first trimester, when the baby is quite low and small. By 20 weeks, the baby is big and prominent enough for a full bladder not to make any difference.

But that was just what she said, not sure how true it was.

just avoid sugary drinks like fruit juice before the scan. the sugar rush can make LO very fidgety and make the sonographer's job difficult. on the plus side, it does mean you get to see little one longer.

actually, one of the best bits of my 20wk scan was when i was told to lay on my side facing away from the screen to get LO to move into a better position. I got to watch DH's face looking at the monitor. He was totally enchanted by seeing our little one (He's a secret big softie). It was really special to see his reaction.
