Pain in upper stomach.

Today I have spent 6 hours in alot of pain. It was across the top of the stomach level where you ribs are. Felt quite sick too.

By the time I had my doctors appointment this afternoon, the pain had gone. Had all checks done, baby fine, bp fine wee clear.

Even though they could find no cause, or feel anything amiss, I have been told if it comes on again to go labour ward, where they can do more tests.

Any ideas what it could have been?

It did ring alarms bells because of past threads on here about this sort of pain. But I am not even sure it was pregnancy related. I have had simular pain about 10 years ago, but that was thought to have been gallstones, but that didnt go that time for few days, and needed painkillers.

I am 25 weeks.

My initial thought was gallstones.
Mine felt like a horrible trapped wind pain that just got worse and worse and came on after I had eaten any food containing saturated fats, especially steak or cheese. It was the worse pain I had ever been - excrutiatingly (sp?)worse than the pain of labour. I would ask them to scan for gallstones. The only painkillers that touched my pain until I had my gallbladder removed were Diclafenac but I'm sure you can't take these in pregnancy.
If you get the pain again, and it sounds like the above, I'd defo ask for a scan and mention to the GP about your previous gallstone query.

Thanks for replying. I did mention gallstone pain, but think it was difficult as the pain was nearly gone. Just hope it dont happen for another 10 years!

I would still get it checked out at some point (scan) - if you do have ghallstones, they shouldn't really be left.

Divster · 02/02/2010 11:43

Thinking about it now, not sure why I wasnt booked for bloods and scan! I know it had settled by the time I was seen, but still think it should have been investigated more.

It was locum doctor and she didnt seem quite sure what to do, and asked me what I thought it might be at first. Then phoned through to the midwife, but midwife only checked pregnancy and comfirmed that to be all ok.

Just noticed you live in same County as me! Hello

This can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia which can be extremely serious. Any symptoms should be checked with your midwife really. If you get any of the symptoms, phone the labour ward for advice, just to be safe.

(I had PE twice so I speak from scary experience!)

Divster · 02/02/2010 13:13

I have been checked by a midwife, and pregnancy wise all is ok.

This is my 6th child, didnt think you could get pe if you hadnt had it in a pregnancy before?

Good, I'm glad you're checked out and well.

You are at lower risk but it is still possible. Sorry if my post was patronising, I'm just aware that untreated PE can lead to kidney failure and worse so wouldn't want anyone to miss symptoms.

Hi Divster - can't remember if I've got suffolk or Northants on my info page -but it's a long wave if I've still got suffolk!.
How many weeks are you?

Divster · 02/02/2010 14:52

No thats ok, just didnt think I could get it. Didnt mean 6th in a way of knowing everything, as I really dont! Which is why I come here and ask silly stuff you have northamptonshire down lol

Divster - in case it is gallstones, perhaps try to cut out/reduce saturated fats as it won't harm you or the baby but will prevent any more bouts of pain. As soon as I knew I had gallstones, I had to move to Germany and my GP told me not to eat any sat fats if possible and after that, until I had the operation, I only had one mild bout of pain.
Obviously I'm not saying it is GSs but until you know for sure, better to prevent that kind of horrible pain! Are GSs in your family because there is some research to show it's hereditary?

shipsladyg · 02/02/2010 16:09

Oooo... I've had something like this since yesterday afternoon - although it feels more like a stitch / pulled muscle. It's right below my breast bone. I'm choosing to believe that it's just more stretching pains for now as it's not continuous and doesn't seem to be affected by exercise. I'm also thinking that last night's headache is a coincidence and was from not drinking enough fluids through the day and that these aren't pre-eclampsia symptoms. I see the midwife next week. The local surgery/midwifery teams are so stretched around here that their standard response is "go to casualty if you're worried" and I don't think three hours sat there will do my blood pressure any favours!

Divster · 02/02/2010 18:45

LC - I have changed my diet now, I ate ALOT of prawn crackers from the takeaway at the weekend, so think that sparked this attack! Needed a wake up call, and boy was this it, what ever it was!

SLG - I think you should go get checked out, as headache is a symtom, as I think you already know as you mentioned it. Really get checked over! You have been told!

LLW - Didnt think you were being patronising, and hope I didnt come across as knowing it all, as I clearly dont xx

I didn't have PE in my first pregnancy but got it in my 2nd. My SIL got it for the first time in her 3rd pregnancy

LowLevelWhingeing · 02/02/2010 19:38

No worries Divster hope you're OK.

luciemule · 02/02/2010 19:42

Shipsladyg - you should defo get checked out but could be something as simple as a pulled intercostal muscle, between your ribs.

shipsladyg · 04/02/2010 11:29

Thanks Divster and Luciemule. Haven't had the pain since the day of posting. As I've had a hacking cough and tend to sleep in ridiculous contorted positions, a pulled muscle sounds like a reasonable explanation. As I see the midwife next week, I'm sure the pee in a pot test will answer it 100%. Still - it was worrying for a while having read the thread. I guess pregnancy can make one just hyper aware of every little niggle and its impact on the bump.

luciemule · 04/02/2010 14:02

especially as all your organs are pushed and squished so much!

Divster · 04/02/2010 20:32

Its all just a constant worry isnt it!
