Im 27 weeks..DH offered to cook..great I said we will have quorn bolognese..somehow DH managed to ignore the recently bought packet of quorn in the freezer and found a packet of tesco own version lurking..cooked it and served it up..after the 6th mouthful..I couldnt avoid the fact that it tasted very odd..went and got the packet..use by Jan 2008!!!..obviously we havent eaten any more but could it do any harm?

Hi that stuff is disgusting anyway - no wonder it tasted funny! Quorn is much nicer. I wouldnt worry too much as it was frozen, and the date is only a guideline. If it was that bad you would have been sick I think. Im no expert but I wouldnt worry about it especially since you didnt eat much!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 01/02/2010 19:54

Don't worry, it should be OK. If it was ancient meat or something I'd worry more.

Yuck, though!

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 19:59

agree that the tesco stuff is vile..think thats why it was lurking uneaten!..We usually eat quorn which is why Im shocked that DH cooked it....he is looking v sheepish at the mo!

it was frozen, though, so hardly out of date

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 20:29

it was frozen to start with aitch...its not the same as buying something fresh..then freezing it iyswim

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 20:35

how is that not better? you can keep things in the back of the freezer pretty much indefinitely.

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 20:50

well my understanding is that if a food is frozen to start with..the date it gives as a use by is because the food starts to perish after this date..if it could be kept indefinitely it would say use by; the end of eternity...not Jan 2008

well seeing as it's quorn, it's not going to be harbouring any of the harmful stuff like listeria/toxo. and as you had only a few mouthfuls of it, I doubt you'll even have dodgy guts.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 21:01

according to a doco i heard, they put a use by date on because opening and closing the door causes temperature dips and ice crystals form which disrupts the appearance and taste of the food. but the guys at birds eye have stuff going back decades and decades and defrost it and test it and it's fine. this is why i said at the back of the freezer. it's basically in suspended animation for the duration.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/02/2010 21:02

So you ate an old mycoprotein. Worst case scenario you will vomit once. That'll be the extent of it. I've eaten stuff years out of date and aside from it tasting bloody awful it did me no harm. You would have found it completely unpalatable if it was really bad for you. Try not to worry

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 21:06

if I wasnt pregnant I wouldnt have worried..but seeminging as I lost my last baby at 23 weeks..I have been rather precious about this pregnancy..however feel reassured now

it probably would have tasted vile even if it was recently bought

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 21:14

och well then, it's completely understandable. tbh i didn't notice that you'd said you were pregnant, i thought you were just being a freak. very sorry to hear about your last wee pregnancy, hope everything goes beautifully this time.

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 21:20

no worries...Im 27 weeks pregnant and its been stressful to say the least..getting past all the milestones..and I have a lot of health complications..so I admit I have been ridiculously paranoid

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 21:27

you can't help it, can you? i only lost little teeny pregnancies but once the trust that everything will be fine is gone, it's gone forever. sad but true. i wish you all the best.

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 21:36

very true.and doesnt matter how far along you are when you suffer a loss..its still devasting..because you invest so much hope in that positive pregnancy test.Ive taken nothing for granted this time and wont relax until LO is safely in my arms...however will not try to panic now about a bit of meat substitute!!!

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 21:38

well yes, it was devastating but it has to be easier to lose them earlier i think. do you know what gender the baby is, that was when i finall started to believe that it might be okay.

memorylapse · 01/02/2010 21:58

well 3 scans have said a girl..but if they are wrong..and its a boy..I dont care as long as its healthy..so no gender specific items will be bought

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneOh · 01/02/2010 22:18

it's a GIRL! they're the best ones. [biased]

whomovedmychocolate · 02/02/2010 07:05

memorylapse - sorry about your loss, you are bound to be a bit more paranoid - I was a total nutter during DS's pregnancy convinced everything was going to go wrong (and to be fair it did but we both survived it). I did get food poisoning in pregnancy - once - you go into hospital and are given Hartmanns rehydration fluids for a day and you are generally fine (as is the baby). They take extra care if you are pregnant. Just keep an eye on yourself, you'll obviously know if there are any side effects but it's unlikely.

P.s. Girls are much sodding easier than boys IME.

memorylapse · 02/02/2010 10:06

thanks both

I didnt get a tummy upset or anything..phew..the only thing that kept me awake was my SPD.
