Had my 12wk scan on Friday was really disappointed as i could not make out any thing could not even get a good picture.Sonographer was very blunt and said it was because of my size i am very obese.
Have any ladies of larger proportion had the same proplem

Thats a little harsh, im a size 18 and at my 20 week scan the sonographer put on my notes 'techinically difficult to scan due to mothers increased BMI'
Charming!
The baby is still so small at 12 weeks, you'll get a better picture at 20 weeks.
Don't let this get you down!

am not large, but it did say on all my scan stuff for my pg's that if you are overweight they may not be able to get a very good pic, so i think it's par for the course unfortunately.

i'm not sure if it depends on how good their equipment is though, or whether it's a purely physical thing.
if it's the former then perhapos you could contact some of the 3d scan places and see if they could offer you a better experience?

Im a size 18 and i think my scans were pretty good considering. Have a look at my profile and see. 1 scan was at 6 weeks the other at 9. Maybe shes just crap and is trying to blame you.

i was a size 24/26 when i was pregnant (am now 22/24) but i never had a problem with my scan pictures. Was your bladder full?????? i had problems when my bladder was not full but a cup of water sorted that!

I think the amount of fat around your stomach is a factor, of course, but its insensitive of her to be quite so blunt with you (especially as I would assume she's had the same situation a zillion times before!). There are other factors, such as the position of the baby, your womb, fluid, the equipment etc.

With DD1 we only had fuzzy scans (and actually had to have vaginal scans mostly). DD2, where I was actually a bit heavier, the second scan was amazingly clear (the best she'd had all week apparently), almost 3D in the sensation we had. However, she still had to do part of it vaginally, as my womb is quite far back apparently (!). I'm not overly obese IYSWIM, probably about a 16/18, but do have a big tummy. So maybe your 20 week scan will be better - or go for a private scan maybe.

The wording on the form/printout is just standard, don't take it personally.

And congratulations! Assume the scan showed that all was well, which is the main thing!

I can relate to this am an 18/20 and although I did think it may be a problem, I had a good 12 week scan. My 20 week was disappointing and this was blamed on my size! but due to this I had to be rescanned to get all the nessecary measurements. Lo and behold 1 week later a perfectly clear picture of our little girl.
I do think that machines/ sonographers, and babies position can play a big role in clarity of pictures.
All the best for the rest of your pregnancy

I am 18/20 normally.. I am currently 38+1 wks pg with DC4. This pg the scans I had at 10weeks, 13weeks and 17weeks were all done vaginally so they could get clear pictures.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 01/02/2010 21:54

Don't take it to heart, some (not all) sonographers love to blame fat for the quality of the pics but it really is the luck of the draw with position etc too, and a full bladder definitely does help. I'm a size 26 before pg, and during my scans I tended to hold/stretch my stomach skin tighter and slightly upwards so there was a bit less belly to have to scan through! My scans have generally been ok.
