Are 3rd pregnancies really that bad?

We are TTC DC3 later this year but most people that know we want another have told us that 3rd pregnancies are the worst. Everyone seems to have had morning sickness that is worse than the first 2 times, GD, earlier and more painful SPD and various other ailments.

Just wondering what the general MN thoughts are on 3rd pregnancies.

Thanks.

The only pregancy I wasn't sick all the way through was no.3. I was always led to believe that no.3 tends to be the best pregnancy and birth. And, on a purely anecdotal note, this was certainly the case for me.

MerlinsBeard · 01/02/2010 13:47

Mine was. My 2nd was pretty shite morning sickness wise - i was sick until nearly 30 weeks. Actually sick too not just nausea.

I had placenta issues with DS3, OC, BP issues, Low iron ... everything except diabetes and pre-eclamspia.

tabbycat7 · 01/02/2010 13:52

I found the sickness worse 3rd time, probably because I was so tired with having 2 pre-schoolers to look after, and I did my back in hoiking them about. I suspect it might be easier if the gaps are bigger and the older ones are at school. Having said that, labour was much quicker and I didn't need any stiches this time.

coppertop · 01/02/2010 13:53

My 3rd pregnancy was probably the easiest for me.

The first was the most difficult as my body just seemed to go haywire with morning sickness, blood pressure problems etc. The second and third were straightforward and a lot easier.

pagwatch · 01/02/2010 13:57

My third was my easiest. Loved it - and I was 41

why do people tell each other this shit? it is like those who tell you birth horror stories the second you get pregnant.
I don't understand it

mo3g · 01/02/2010 13:59

My 3rd was the worst ever bad sickness, spd for the 1st time, ill all the way through although it was my best birth and easiest baby to recover from and look after so think it just depends on you really i had all mine close together so maybe just my tired body.

It doesn't have to be really awful but each pregnancy is an additional strain on your body. Plus, you are working harder anyway looking after your other children.

I found the early part of my 3rd pg the worst - very sick for a long time. But the third trimester was actually the easiest to cope with of all of them.

She was also the easiest birth out of the three

Ninni · 01/02/2010 14:23

I found up to week 30, 3rd pregnancy was as easy and enjoyable as the other two. However, after that it was hard but mainly because you have more work with the other two. Still just as exciting (maybe even more for some reason). Im due in 2 weeks and can't wait to see if this one is anything like the his/her beautiful brothers! Each pregnancy is different and it's all wort i in the end how ever it is, good luck!

KinderellaTristabelle · 01/02/2010 14:43

Nope. My third was great. No SPD or swelling, no high blood pressure or swelling as with 2nd. (Was a little bit stronger/fitter, (training once a week) -don't know if that helped.)

Less feeling sick too. Maybe I was more careful with eating regularly etc., don't really know. All DS's by the way.

Kayzr · 01/02/2010 14:45

Thanks everyone.

It sounds like it depends on the person in question then. I have never had morning sickness so everyone has said that I am likely to get it really badly with a 3rd. Now I will just ignore them.

Nope. Mine is better than my first, but same as my second. No morning sickness, which was nice.

I'm just starting to get a bit tired at 29 weeks, but with a DH in Iraq for 8 fecking months and a 3yo and 2yo to cope with I reckon I'd be tired anyway.

Good luck.

cece · 01/02/2010 16:40

No morning sickness or other ailments here. In fact my blood pressure was the best it has every been during pg. Had pre - eclampsia scares with my first two...

gizmo · 01/02/2010 16:51

Like everyone says, Kayzr, I think it's more to do with age, workload and chance than some cast iron rule.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and it is my hardest, with moderate morning nausea and incipient SPD. But my first two pregnancies were an absolute ball, so really I am due a bit of hardship. I am also 39, work full time and have a couple of very energetic boys - basically something's gotta give!

MummyTumble · 01/02/2010 16:54

My 3rd was fab....it's no4 that's the worst...if this was my first it would be an only child

ALT2 · 01/02/2010 16:55

Mine was fine even though I was told morning sickness and other complains BP etc would be heightened as it was twins. I did have a bit of a gap though DS2 was 3 when I got pregnany. I was also very fit at the time and I really think that helped.

hannahsaunt · 01/02/2010 17:06

First was the worst and fourth following a close second. Second probably the best and third somewhere in the middle.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 01/02/2010 18:06

I am 13 weeks with no. 3 and am shocked by how relatively easy it is! Both two previous pregnancies I had hyperemesis and was in bed by 7.30pm.

I am only sick two or three times a day most days and stay up til 9.30pm some nights

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just used to it now and get on with things or whether you can only get so tired and am already worn out looking after the 3 and 1 year old

NonnoMum · 01/02/2010 18:25

I didn't find the pregnancy hard, but towards the end, No 3 wasn't very good at getting into position... (Apparently everything is a bit slack in there!)

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 01/02/2010 18:29

Mine is easier in some ways and harder in others. I wasn't recovered from DS2 when I fell pregnant and have had a very rough time, but that is more due to bad timing. Apart from that, I am pretty used to 'being pregnant' and for these 5 months so far (esp. past month when sickness has eased) I have just felt like I normally do I think you need to be as well as you can be really, lingering low iron etc. are awful. Apart from that I think you tend to be more aware SPD is starting so it seems earlier, but you are just aware of what it is.

mazzystartled · 01/02/2010 18:43

I am still being sick - though not every day - at 28 weeks. But that is the usual pattern for me and I am used to it, and its possibly preferable to relentless all day nausea. Apart from that feeling so much better than round 2 (no spd thus far, still quite energetic), perhaps because I am too busy to think about it very much.

I think pregnancy sickness is more to do with genetics, tiredness and stress than number of pregnancies.

DrSkidaddle · 01/02/2010 21:13

Hasn't been too bad until recently (am now 37 weeks) but I think that is almost entirely due to having a toddler and a pre-schooler to deal with, plus I agree age is an important factor. Have NEVER heard MS is worse with a 3rd pg...

dizzynconfused · 01/02/2010 22:42

easiest pregnancy so far, 1st was really bad MS, 2nd was little beter, but at moment num ber 3 (28wks)and im loving it, hardly any MS in beggining, just starting to get tired now.

Dont know how much longer the 'happiness feeling' will last as im a childminder working full time atm, serious tiredness might hit next week!!
