Those that didn't find out the sex - what did you do about buying stuff?

We're having second thoughts about finding out the sex at my 20 week scan (to much potential aggro with family - all minor but don't want to deal with it!)

If you didn't find out the sex did you just go with unisex colours or did you wait until the baby was born to buy things?? What did you do about other people wanting to buy presents.

It's a little irrelavant really as I wouldn't be rushing to buy pink even if it is a girl but a lot of family/friends seem to think that 'colour coding' the baby is important!

Me too - babygros for the first few months here... IN fact DS2 is one today aged 8 months...

EdgarAllenSnow · 31/01/2010 16:28

dd didn't have a bedroom until 18mo...and its white anyway.

i bought unisex, which is rea co my second was a boy. as others have said, some babies are out of newborn sizes so quickly pre-birth stuff should be kept to a minium.

I do Two4One. As cute as "miniature" things are (I have a bit of an obsession actually; even the teeny toothpaste tubes you get on planes make me go "aww"), little leather jackets and jeans etc on a new baby are just wrong IMO.

Casmama · 31/01/2010 16:37

Nothing new colour wise but agree, bodysuits babygrows and a couple of cardis are all that is really needed at first and you will get loads of gifts. Worth buying 0-3 unless you have a scan nearer the time. My ds had IUGR only discovered at 39+ weeks so was induced and then dh had to nip to supermarket to buy tiny baby clothes as he was only 5lbs 9 but best that than buy lots in newborn size and baby is too big when born.

Someone refurbished their Moses Basket and passed it on to my DD1. It was all done in plain white but had 2M of pink ribbon and 2 M of blue packed inside.

Longtalljosie · 31/01/2010 16:49

I did find out but am getting neutral stuff where I can in case it's a boy next time... Next do fab unisex babygros - nice bright colours... I've got the duck and bee ones and the animals ones - DD looks fab in them

Finding out the sex just so people can buy obvious clothing is the LAST reason to find out, IMO!

We didn't want to find out, and it didn't cause us any problems at all. You need so little stuff fo the newborn phase, anyway.

hi there..
well we are not finding out but i prob get a few white or pale yellow clthes and blankets and anything we think looks unisex. the only reason i colour coded my other 2 angels was i got fed up with everyone saying she's lovely when it was my DS now 8 and my DD now 3 they kept sayin he!! so i specifically made it clear what they were in the end lol..
this time i still have DD clothes and am just goin to go out when baby is a wk old as have to register him/her anyway to buy any clothes extras needed.
As for baby gifts you are all so lucky.. i dont think anyone has turned up with gifts for my 2
my mum left when i was 2mth old n even tho i still speak to her after finding her after 24yrs she still forgets ALL birthdays dispite bein told them. and my dad is a scrooge who hasnt even got my 2 birthday or xmas presents yet
So anything we get is what we buy. My family have never been close but my lil family as so close its unbelievable

congrats and good luck on your pregnancy hun

pigleychez · 31/01/2010 18:30

We didnt find out with DD so bought white and neuteral coloured clothes and things.

Within a few weeks of being born friends ad fanily had bought her an entire pink wardrobe anyway!

I had been given a bag of boys clothes from a friends DS incase we needed them. We didnt and they are still in the loft. Im currently 24 weeks with number 2 which is again a suprise so will be reusing all those lovely tiny white clothes.

BigTillyMint · 31/01/2010 18:37

We didn't want to find out the sex of our DC before they were born.

We didn't buy much stuff because we knew we would be given loads of presents and babies grow so fast. We just bought white babygro's (apart from unisex stuff like pram, etc)

In the event, we had to go and get tiny baby babygro's for them when they were born anyway

i think tiny babies look lovely in white!

LooL00 · 01/02/2010 11:38

lilac is a great colour for cot sheets. a neutral pink blue mix.

sophieandbelly · 01/02/2010 15:20

i didnt find out with my first and was strangely convinced that she was going to b a he!!!
took lots of white cream (green) gros into hosp. she was born at 5.05 in evening, had oh in mothercare at 9 the next morning stocking up on pink cardis!! love babies in gros with little cardis,
dont think i will find out with this one either its such and amazing suprise after all that work.

altho if its only a family thing u could find out and shop!! and tell everyone u dont no!!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 01/02/2010 15:25

We found out but didn't buy anything based on that anyway. We didn't tell anyone either (just said we hadn't found out) so we mostly had neutral stuff in white or bright colours. I love white for little ones anyway.

whippybamboo · 02/02/2010 14:38

Yellow, green, white baby clothes

nickytwotimes · 02/02/2010 14:41

White, cream, greens, yellows, etc.

I bloody hate gender specific stuff anyway.
