Does anyone know if 135/79 is classed as high blood pressure? As when I had my booking in I was 115/80 and m/w said that was high, I have had a really bad headache all week so went to the doctors today and my bp was 153/79 and he said that was normal. Im 13 weeks pregnant, in my first I had bp problems and pre-eclampsia.

I think (but am no expert) that anything over 140/80 or 140/90 can't remember which is classed as high/raised blood pressure. I'm pretty sure the number at the bottom is the one they get really concerned about if it gets too high.

thedollshouse · 29/01/2010 17:58

The first number sounds high. My bp is normally 120/80 but in pregnancy it has dropped to 100/60. Do they have any suggestions bearing your mind your previous history?

mrsrvc · 29/01/2010 17:59

I think its considered borderline. ( I am guessing you mean 135/79 whcih you have typed twice, and that the 153/79 is a typo)

Throughout my last pg I had bp of about 140/80, it was never considered a big concern, but they did keep mentioning that they were keen that it didn't get any higher. I think that its the lower number that they are most concerned with, and anything over 140/90 is considered high.

Oddly this time at booking it was 140/80ish but has consistently 115/70 ish since.
I hope that it settles for you. Try to take it easy.

Can't remember what the top number should be but they usually say over 90 is high for the bottom number.

Pingpong · 29/01/2010 18:01

I thought if the top number gets over 140 or the bottom number goes over 90 they get worried so 135/79 is getting close but okay whereas 153/79 is high.
If your MW considered your booking in BP high then today's reading is higher so I'd give her a call and explain about the headache and BP reading.

activate · 29/01/2010 18:02

No it's not

bottom level has to be approaching or over 100 for them to be worried

kcoffin27 · 29/01/2010 18:02

Thanks for the reply, I just noticed I put the figures in wrong! Today my bp was 135/79 not 153/79. I just want the headaches to go away, doctor gave me a prescription for co-codeine but I dont want to take these really. I have had 6 m/c's so dont want to risk anything this time.

top level would have to be over 160 to be considered high

its not high

shushpenfold · 29/01/2010 18:06

Systolic (first number) 'aims' to be 100 plus your age, up to 150...then drs start to look closer, 160 plus is high. Diastolic (second number) is fine up to 90, then starts to be looked at.

mummyscrummy · 29/01/2010 21:25

it varies between doctors, but generally agree with the others its the bottom munber thats important anything over 90 is high but some gp's say 100 or over! So your're not too worry!

AKMD · 29/01/2010 22:34

Echo what everyone else has said but what is considered within the 'normal' range may be high for you if you are usually at the low end of the scale. Your MW will be able to spot trends here so don't panic

bruxeur · 29/01/2010 22:37

There's some frankly dangerous misinformation on this thread.

Hypertension is a blood pressure reading that's consistently over 140/90, as here.

Agree that diastolic more important.

The key here is consistently. One-off readings mean very little.

daniwalkes · 30/01/2010 07:25

My blood pressure was 135/80 at my last appointment and was told it was fine, i had pre-eclamsia with my first and my blood pressure got to 180/95 and nothing was done but monitoring until it got to 200/110 and i was admitted into hospital. i think it all depends on what your booking in was and it needs to increase quite a lot from that for them to be concerned! i wouldn't worry, the midwife should tell you when it becomes an issue.

MumNWLondon · 30/01/2010 19:53

Its slightly high... but not high enough for them to be worried about it... if you are concerned go back to GP/midwife for another test in a few weeks?

That's a good link MumNWLondon I was pretty sure that 140/90 was when they start to worry but like the link points out it very much depends what your initial reading was at your booking in appointment.

kcoffin27 · 31/01/2010 11:35

Thanks for all the advice, I will go back next week and see what it is then
